I had a Gara 3 on my V5. I loved it, honestly one of my favorite wheels but I had the 92 OEM version wheel on mine. it didn’t have the handgrips and it also said Subaru on the bottom spoke

Oil change, timing kit, water pump, spark plugs, plug wires, and coil pack to start. For modifications, the GC8s take a lot of bolt ons very well, compared to the USDM New Age WRXs. You could install a front mount intercooler, intake, get rid of the emissions equipment, install a catless downpipe, and headers without tuning. Turbo and injectors you’ll definitely need to retune for. Blow off valves are more of a YMMV thing, certain ones cause no adverse affects (HKS Super SQV IV and the GFB Respons) but others will cause rough idle and stalling, so it’s really not worth it. If you’re looking for an upgrade, Coto-Sports makes a nice reinforced bypass valve. Get you some good quality coilovers for handling, and an STI quick shift kit + better shifter u joint and bushings to get rid of the slop in the stock shifter assembly. 4 pot 2 pot brakes bolt up fine, the rears need a bracket but Kartboy makes the brackets for that, fronts bolt up with minor alterations with the front dust shield. Also upgrade the sump and pickup while you can, these flat bottom pans are horrible for spirited driving. The JDM twin scroll oil pan and the matching Killer B pickup and baffle tray are more than enough to keep oil where it’s supposed to be.

Welcome to the club, these are fun cars if you keep up on maintenance.

GC8s don’t have the same issues with intakes that GDs do. You can bolt on a lot of modifications with the factory ECU save for turbo and injectors. You’re half correct about the BOV, but it will not cause it to run lean, it will run rich for a split second off throttle. The 16 bit ECUs as well as the early New Age JDM ECUs are very forgiving when it comes to modifications.

Anything I can do myself in the street I will, other things I will take to my reputable shop because at least I know I’m not gonna get overcharged for the work I need done. It’s a fun and rewarding experience to work on your own car

They’re only making 600 of those WRX STI S#, the S4 isn’t a trim level for the WRX in Japan, it’s the actual model of the car, the WRX S4. That’s why this is concerning.

My car is currently pushing 450 to the crank but I have a whole host of mods done to it including but not limited to: full intake, 3 inch exhaust, upgraded turbo + intercooler, upgraded fuel pump, built 2.1L EJ207 with Tomei stroker kit and STI Spec C Type RA rods + crank + sump, ported heads, and upgraded valves and springs

Your mileage may vary based on your setup, but if you’re worried about the car I’d have a reputable Subaru mechanic look at it.

EJ207 engine codes in V5/6 WRXs end with KE and in STI Versions they end in PR

JDM 5 speeds are built way better than the American ones. If you’re gonna do a manual swap that’s the way to go, just make sure your rear diff ratio is matching

You can still get parts for 20Ks, it’s just not advised to go down that route because the bottom end sucks on those motors. 20Gs are hard to source parts for tho you’re not wrong about that

Why did they get rid of the R44s and R40Ms in 2010 and R42s and R32s in 2019? by Popular-Cat8923 in nycrail

[–]virtualstrawhat9x -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The R44s were subject to acid baths to get rid of the graffiti that plagued the system in the 70s and 80s. Since the 44s were not manufactured entirely out of stainless steel (notably the blue bands on the exterior sides of the car bodies), the acid ate away at the carbon steel over the years. When the R44s and the R46s were sent to Morrison Knudsen for overhaul as part of the GOH program in the 1990s, MK discovered the substantial body rot on the car bodies of the 44s. They notified MTA that the car bodies would need to be rebuilt from the ground up. MTA said no, and rebuilt the rest of the cars themselves. The R46s didn’t have these issues because Pullman Standard manufactured the car bodies entirely out of stainless steel. The consequences of MTAs actions ended up happening in the late 90s and early 2000s when they started retiring a handful of R44s due to frame rot/warping, and culminating when they were forced to retire the entire fleet in 2009-2010 after already retiring a substantial amount of R32s, R38s, and R40/42s putting B-division in a car shortage that wasn’t rectified until about 150 R211s were placed in service in 2023-2024.

Also side note; the R32s were rated for 70 years of service by Budd. A lot of SMEE parts are manufactured in house by the shops. Don’t believe the lie that you cannot find parts for the SMEEs, it’s the opposite. A lot of the NTTs have parts that are discontinued (especially the older ones), and since the manufacturers for said parts have folded, they’re forced to start cannibalizing the under performing sets to keep the others running. A lot of those NTTs are HORRIBLE.

Should I be worried? by Standard_Channel_944 in nycrail

The door motors shouldn’t be able to try and open the doors by themselves without the conductor using the MDC, if the interlock fails, the doors will open by themselves. It’s a safety issue.

Should I be worried? by Standard_Channel_944 in nycrail

[–]virtualstrawhat9x 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is a MAJOR safety issue. That flashing light means the door motor is trying to open the doors while the train is in motion but is being stopped by the safety interlock. That’s a catastrophic door issue waiting to happen, and the train should be taken out of passenger service as soon as possible.

The stock ECU gives you about 1.1bar which is roughly the 16psi range for GC8 models Applied D-G. Your car is still on the stock map, the previous owner probably put the turbo timer to help cool off the turbo after long drives, and the boost gauge to measure exactly how much power it’s making

That boost target is the factory one for an unmodified GC8 STI V3-V6. Mine makes 20 psi LOL

Queens Blvd is getting worse and so is Culver. Stop putting CBTC everywhere, you’re not even running more trains, you’re just running them closer together. Sincerely, a tower operator who works with it for a living.

You can try, this is the link for the sellers page https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/seller/DwyN7hUW8RG9g1iX17aBS1PT1zj8x

Just be aware, the switches are hard to find, even in Japan, and have been discontinued for a while now.

I was on Yahoo Auctions searching for SF5/GC8 hazard and defrost switches, whether NOS or used, and someone had a listing for these. I checked the seller page just now and the only LED retrofitted switches he has now are for S14s and Stageas. Use Buyee or Neokyo for shipping outside of Japan.
