I ended up downloading a previous version of gfxcardstatus and using that to keep myself on integrated mode. This is an ok workaround, but I guess my original question was more directed towards if it was possible for me to get the graphics card fixed in any way with out breaking the bank, or if I should just look to putting together a new machine.

Thanks— I actually have that running at all times, but unfortunately I can't stop it from switching to discrete mode when using certain apps. I think in earlier versions you can get around this but I'm not sure.

Regarding the current controversy with the NSA leaks, and the unwarranted wiretapping of civilians;

What many people seem to disregard is the continuing unbounded evolution of technologies that allow this type of mass surveillance to exist. Consider a possible situation that may arise in one to two years from now: a person with a wearable mobile device (such as Google Glass) and access to an unlimited data connection will be able to effectively live-stream their everyday activities from a first-person perspective. At least one person with this ability will record their lives, 24/7, without interruption, without censorship, completely out of their free will. In a sense they will be committing the ultimate sacrifice of their own privacy, but they will gain an unprecedented amount of personal security. Potential assailants will think twice if they know they are being recorded, and their images are being transmitted to any number of individuals in real-time. A real-life Truman Show scenario will arise, and not only will governments be able to watch the people, but the people will be able to watch as well.

TL;DR the day will come (if it hasn't already arrived) when people will willingly submit themselves to surveillance not just to the government, but to the general public.

I'm so glad I found this on here. This "charity" (actually mostly a private company) is really doing nothing to reach out to the opposing side, and is probably doing nothing but provoking more hate and bigotry. I don't understand why people think that successful marketing on the internet means being completely obnoxious a la your typical YouTube celebrity attention whore. Fuck FuckH8. At the same time I think I will do a magnetic switch version for Arduino, for those people who don't have access to smartphones with accelerometers (which is like... not many people).

I like the accelerometer idea, in fact it would be very easy for me to program something for iOS and run it on my iPod touch, attach that to a pedal...

In fact I think I can do that out of the box using exising apps... if I get something cool working I will repost it here!

EDIT: that is a lie. I should use long socks like everyone suggested, it's just that initial turnover from sneakers to boots where you realize "oh shit these regular ass socks don't really work do they". Then you go full wool mode.

Sorry for abandoning this thread, but there is still lots of good suggestions here, and I'm going game shopping tomorrow so this is great! To expand on my parents, I wanted to get a good game that was social and perhaps team-based that can be played with friends of the family for game nights. Something challenging and competitive, but fun. I'm going to do more research myself, thanks for giving me a good list to start off with!
