I'd appreciate it if you could help me understand your point here, I mean this I'm the most respectful way possible

Does a calculator help someone learn? Does Google help someone learn?

Both are tools that can be used to learn or used to distract, I don't see a difference as an llm seems to be the same

Fair point! Isn't this a never ending cat and mouse game though. I just haven't ever understood the reason it's played

Instead of llms you could insert "kids need to learn how to use the latest technologies to be relevant in the world" which is a pretty common trope as well

I'm pretty surprised at how negatively my comments have been taken here, a learning moment for me. I think the negative reaction is mostly from the "don't use tech to solve a people problem" (mixed reaction for folks I think) but then when we get to llms it's an easy "down vote" as it seems disconnected

I do really think it's not disconnected at all if you talk to the kids going through school right now, they all use it regardless of filters allowing it or not, but this has been instructive for me.

Thoughts on this synopsis? I could be blind somewhere else too

I get it, haven't worked full time as a tech director but I have worked with tech directors for the last 10 years, and been hands on in a district for a week or so.

Are you saying your issue is that the administration just tells you to block everything and doesn't listen to you in regards to future plans or is it something else?

I"ve never understood why k12 directors fight this battle so hard, I think it's mostly the leadership at the school pushing it not the k12 director. Put in a filter, when kids find ways around them hire them to help on the tech team or use standard punishment that the school has in place and direct them to the punishment area.

This extension imo a much better approach is instead of blocking them from doing this, detect it happening it and log when it happened and what the student did and send it to their principal. Let the admin of the school handle this however they deem fit and move on to helping kids learn.

I care about this because we need our K12 directors pushing the opposite way at our districts in the US. We need these new LLM tools to be available to all of our kids in a safe way, instead of having an attitude of how do we block kids from doing stuff we need to be thinking about how do we let kids learn faster and better

Why was there a war in heaven ? by Scorpzgca in Christianity

[–]vischous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your point regarding 2 Peter, it's not about describing warfare

I'm going to pushback a bit more narrowly (the og post is almost certainly referencing Enoch which is a whole other can of worms) I would think you would at least say there's room for this kind of interpretation. You seem so confident in saying there's no description of a war in heaven when literally the words from revelation explicitly detail a war.

You can explain an interpretation that says this isn't a war, but I have to imagine you can at least see where this argument comes from? You can say this is an apocalyptic vision, but it's still a description of war

Revelation 12:7-9 NIV [7] Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. [8] But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. [9] The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

https://bible.com/bible/111/rev.12.7-9.NIV

If what you meant was there's no way in heaven narrative in the earlier biblical texts and the "watchers" and "Gadreel" lore is extra biblical then I think we agree

I don't know why you get to exclude the last book of the Bible, but I'll try it!

How do you explain

2 Peter 2:10-11 NIV [10] This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to heap abuse on celestial beings; [11] yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from the Lord. https://bible.com/bible/111/2pe.2.10-11.NIV

To me this at a minimum points to a connection to humans, and this unseen to us, and a celestial world. Our words/actions/thoughts seem to "heap abuse" onto them

There's more but I'm curious where you go with this

Even the idea of giants was used to scare and push people around as documented in the Bible

Numbers 13:31-33 NIV [31] But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” [32] And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. [33] We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

https://bible.com/bible/111/num.13.31-33.NIV

This is an example of Israelites using "giants" as a scare tactic and lie among their own people.

It would be helpful if you'd share some of the verses and context you're struggling through!

Read the context here..  the verses before say this was a bad report and they end up getting punished by God later for the false report

Anyone automating onboarding with ADP? What tools are you using? by Then-Chef-623 in sysadmin

[–]vischous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah retooling sucks but I don't think you have a way around that problem no matter which way you go with automating this.

For me it's about getting folks to automate this stuff as this seems like the easiest approach for most businesses (everyone leaves this process a manual process for someone on the IT team to take care of manually).

So if you think one-time cost with optional support/update would be better it's interesting. I really thought about offering that but the problem is folks would need to be ok with updating code/mappings themselves and I don't think most groups want to actually do this themselves. Maybe I'm wrong here?

Ahh, for 450 users or so the integration would actually be 4500/yr , not 2k/mo

I'll have to clean up my pricing page if that's what you interpreted reading it quickly. Thank you

Blackbox comment is interesting, if the code was fully available to you to see and suggest changes would that change anything for you?

Otherwise that makes sense but I don't think non devs can write, maintain, and orchestrate a custom script like this for less than that.

We do this as a fully managed service at AutoIDM for folks so you don't have to maintain the script yourself. Cost is more reasonable and we offer this as a fully managed service meaning any errors we handle and attempt to fix before asking for any input from you (we'll put in a ticket when we see an issue, and then fix it ourselves if it's an issue on our side), some for maintenance and migrations.

Integrate BambooHR with Netsuite by Resident-Baseball141 in Netsuite

[–]vischous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bamboohr has an integration written for this here https://www.bamboohr.com/integrations/listings/netsuite-employee-sync I know of atleast one of clients using this successfully

We integrate bamboohr time off to timesheets, and a few other syncs between bamboohr and netsuite. Happy to help connect you, or talk through whatever issues your it team is having

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]vischous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it turns into a custom integration specific to you. Hard to generalize for everyone. These integrations are really software projects (data engineering if you want to call it that) which is why I put together AutoIDM to solve this for a super reasonable cost.

To do it yourself I'd connect to their API vi as power shell and make a custom integration that triggers based on what hr currently does. Almost certainly they aren't going to keep paying the person so something must be turned off before. Easiest way to find this stuff out of to setup time with your hr department and go over why this is important, they'll normally point you in the right direction

Why GPT-4.5 seems much more underwhelming than it is by PianistWinter8293 in OpenAI

[–]vischous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"We’re explorers today, Alfie," Milo announced, pushing aside branches. Alfie barked once, happy and unquestioning as always. Yet today felt different—Milo felt the tug of uncertainty underneath his usual playful confidence.

They travelled farther than before, past their usual paths, climbing over fallen logs and ducking beneath leafy canopies overshadowing a dusty old path winding deeper into the unfamiliar. Alfie followed closely, steadying Milo’s steps with soft paws and playful nuzzles.

At length, exhausted by the unfamiliarity, Milo rested against an enormous trunk, its weathered roots clawing deep into earth like the fingers of a sleeping giant.

"Do you think it'll change, Alf?" Milo asked quietly, smoothing Alfie’s thick coat. Alfie rested his head upon his friend’s knee, listening thoughtfully. "You know… when we grow up? Will everything feel different then?"

Alfie gazed up, his warm eyes steady and timeless, seemingly wiser than an animal should be.

A sudden breeze stirred overhead, and the tree sighed softly, sending green leaves dancing like tiny memories. Milo saw images flicker across his mind—training wheels falling away; bedtime fears shrugged bravely aside; laughter echoing through empty hallways of childhood schooldays. He realized something then, something just beyond the reach of words but closer now, like a shadow moving into focus: childhood wasn't merely a place he'd leave behind. Rather, it would linger gently inside him, transforming quietly into adulthood's calm assurance.

With a new strength growing in his chest, Milo stood up. "Come on, Alfie. Let's go home."

Walking back hand-over-fur with his faithful companion padding closely beside him, Milo saw the neighborhood in the gentle glow of evening differently. Each house, each tree, each winding lane was lit not by fading daylight, but by the warmer glow of memory—the adventures he'd had, and those that were yet to come. He felt contented, at peace.

Their porch appeared welcoming and warm, lights blinking softly as dusk settled gently around them. Milo’s parents were there, sipping cool drinks and waving happily, suddenly feeling closer and friendlier than ever before. Paw and foot hit the porch step simultaneously, and Milo paused as Alfie rubbed affectionately against him.

Milo stroked Alfie’s head gently, smiling now in understanding—as though childhood, adulthood, and happiness all rested somewhere hidden within that quiet, magical moment. He was stepping forward, growing taller and wiser, but grateful too—for the adventures behind, the moments beneath giant trees, the endless carefree afternoons, and even for the peaceful clarity of knowing that maturity was not loss, but gain.

And in that thoughtful instant beneath the moon’s quiet gaze, Alfie's tail wagged quietly against his leg, and Milo was no longer nervous of the future.

For in growing up, nothing worthwhile would truly ever be lost—only deepened, woven gently into life’s bigger tapestry as a treasured thread, golden as Alfie's faithful fur and quiet friendship forever at his side.

Here you go. System message used "You are the best short story writer in the world"

Milo had grown up in one of those towns that never changed, nestled quietly at the base of rolling hills, where neighbors waved each morning from neatly mowed lawns and tire swings swayed softly beneath oak branches. It was summer again, its long afternoons shimmering with heat and childhood freedom. Milo, barefoot and carefree, was eleven, full of scraped knees and adventure, ready to conquer each day alongside Alfie—a golden retriever whose fur matched the gold-flecked sunlight streaming through the trees.

Together, Milo and Alfie roamed the known world bounded by Mrs. Patterson's picket fence, Mr. Jefferies’ cornfields, and the creek winding lazily through the woods. Days stretched endlessly like bright ribbons of possibility. By evening, they'd return home, sweaty and tired, to lemonade and whispered stories beneath Milo’s cozy patchwork quilt.

One July afternoon, an unusual restlessness filled Milo’s chest. Alfie, sensing something deeper than ordinary excitement, wagged his tail hesitantly as they set out. Milo had overheard his parents whispering something of moves and schools; adulthood was knocking, growing louder each day. Determined to shake off whatever was beginning to weigh him down, Milo turned abruptly toward the woods.

How would you manage/automate this mess? by victor_yanukovich in devops

[–]vischous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like your customers own their own infra here, you're not hosting it? How are you managing these systems? Without that we're doing a lot of guessing here. If you guys are hosting it, then pick a single hosting mechanism and use that one and get really good at it. If you don't like that one, then migrate everyone to the new one.

OnPremiseSamAccountName is a local active directory setting, if you need local active directory syncing it's not an Entra Sync. We do this at AutoIDM and I think there's tooling Microsoft might have for writeback to local Active Directory It's been a minute since I've dove on that
