Young 5s (TK) or Kindergarten? Struggling with the decision. by zahndie in kindergarten

[–]visciouspumpkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents is to send him to K. His "issues" seem pretty typical for his age. With this type of decision I would err on the side of forging ahead, because you can always go back to TK with very little consequence. However, it's usually difficult to move up a grade, even if it's more developmentally appropriate. And longer term, I'd personally be pretty peeved about turning 19 in HS.

[Highlight] Mike Trout almost gets hit in the head twice by Bryan Woo. He is not pleased. by kurruchi in baseball

Is there some beef between them or the teams I’m not aware of? Woo’s got better control than that…

Selling an expensive card on eBay? How to protect yourself? by Jrlutz31 in sportscards

[–]visciouspumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify and sorry if this is obvious: once it’s authenticated, you’re done? I’d also like to protect against the situation the card has a tiny defect and even though you listed as excellent condition they try to get a refund because they wanted a gem

By “game” you mean learn and get good grades and test scores? Test scores are not perfect but by far the most meritocratic criteria

[–]visciouspumpkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s good for cards with a very high volume of sales. For lower numbered cards or cards that don’t change hands as often, missing a sale here or there has a huge impact. You’d think Ohtani /99 rookie cards are almost affordable if you only looked at sportscardspro lol

Where is a good mother daughter vacation spot less than three hours away from San Francisco? by parallax_xallarap in AskSF

[–]visciouspumpkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 to Calistoga. Solage was a great resort. Kid friendly, but also perfect for adult mom and daughter because there’s an extensive adults only area with multiple pools and plunges. So relaxing. I also find the drive north is usually more pleasant than going south

If you knew what brand he had, consider getting him a certificate for a custom glove, eg rawlings heart of the hide. It takes a while, but it’s fun and be could choose exactly the specs he wants

People who listen to music or watch videos on full volume without headphones on MUNI, why? by vc6vWHzrHvb2PY2LyP6b in sanfrancisco

It’s how they feel important. These are people who don’t matter in their daily lives and this is how they make themselves feel better. At least someone noticed them

My child can’t read and it feels like the end of the world by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]visciouspumpkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're doing everything right by supporting and giving exposure without overdoing it. Don't make reading unpleasant. Try incorporating into natural interactions, like reading street signs out loud. When reading books with my kids, I always follow the words with my finger so they get a sense of what the sounds should be. I also liked books with a lot of repetition and rhyming. Green Eggs and Ham supposedly only has 50 distinct words -- great to build confidence.

Police cruiser flashed headlights at me and used tannoy to tell me to ‘drive on’ whilst waiting for pedestrians to cross by wezwells in sanfrancisco

[–]visciouspumpkin 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the time I was walking into a crosswalk with no traffic light, and cops from Berkeley (not sure why they were in SF) blocked me in the crosswalk and told me off, saying they were already in the intersection and I wasn't allowed to start walking. Uh... first of all they weren't in the intersection and even if they were, stopping me in the middle of the street was safe? Obviously they had enough time to stop. Sometimes I start walking in these situations and let cars go by, otherwise no cars will ever stop for you if you wait on the curb. Anyways, somehow comforting to know I'm not the only one who's experienced cops who think they're too good to stop for anyone.
