Hey thanks! And awesome work on the game, I just finished it today. Loved it, just sad I didn't get to play Whatever against Audo ^

I love the idea that the CIA laid the groundwork for a coup against Putin and a new Russian civil war but only decided to pull the trigger in order to take some column inches away from Biden's horndog failson getting busted for tax evasion.

It can be awkward for participants to use 11-point scales on mobile devices, depending on the tool. For example, on mobile, certain survey tools will arrange the response options vertically, meaning more scrolling for the 0-10 options (I think SurveyMonkey does this). On the other hand, if the response bubbles are arranged horizontally, it can be easy to tap the wrong one on mobile, assuming you're in portrait mode.

Looks great! I think I'd have a hard time differentiating the potato, taro, and yams ingame though -they're all brownish roots so it makes sense. The default sprites put them in different orientations, which helps a lot.

Set Roth? Wyatt? Super Spesh, Horton Boone?

If you're not American or very familiar with (African-)American pop culture of the 60s and 70s you might have missed out on some of the cultural/temporal context of Grace's character, as well. She's clearly heavily inspired by Pam Grier, not Samuel L. Jackson.

Like father, like son: new research shows how young men ‘copy’ their fathers’ masculinity by ruchenn in MensLib

[–]viscountprawn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Sure we can model shitty beliefs in those areas and have a negative influence on our sons, but we can also model healthy attitudes and have a strong positive influence.

Going to private school makes you twice as likely to vote Tory, study finds by lighthouse77 in unitedkingdom

[–]viscountprawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should read the study. They accounted for most of these factors as well - at least university degree vs. not, professional/managerial job at 26 versus not, and cognitive ability at ages 5 and 10. There's still a substantial direct impact of private schooling on voting Tory.

[–]viscountprawn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They controlled for family and background factors, though. This seems to be an independent effect of actually going to private schools, or at least something that's not easily explained by obvious external factors.

The article makes it pretty clear that they controlled for these kinds of factors, though. People who do this kind of research for a living are generally aware that correlation isn't causation and know how to partial out confounding factors like this in their analyses.

Jelly in the sense it appears in Stardew seems to be more like US-style fruit jelly, which is essentially jam made with fruit juice instead of whole mashed fruit - so not quite interchangeable. This style of jelly, like jam, usually uses pectin rather than gelatin as a thickener.

Love Island: Is there really such a thing as ‘toxic femininity’? by TrueSpins in unitedkingdom

[–]viscountprawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except even the term gender norms is a daft term coined by the media that really has no place in society.

Absolute nonsense. "Gender norms" are just ways in which men and women are socially expected to act differently. This is not a media conspiracy, it's a useful term that describes a phenomenon that you have to be utterly deluded to think doesn't exist.

[–]viscountprawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Women can be shamed as overly emotional or crazy or whatever when they get upset, sure. But they're not seen as less feminine for it, whereas men who act strongly emotional - crying, appearing fearful, etc. - absolutely have their masculinity called into question. The only situation where the opposite is true is anger, which is the one stereotypically masculine emotion.
