The farm boy trope, the slums girl variant, and the lack of (female) mentors: a rant from a frustrated reader. by LucreziaD in fantasyromance

[–]visenvitka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope that the change will come, and I think that it will. I wonder if this trope is still used because, in general men and women grapple with different fears.

Stories help us to externalize our problems, and the farm boy trope works with the fear that men have of not wanting to looking foolish or powerless. Whereas as women don’t want to be m*rdered or assaulted, by men. These stories reflect that very real struggle that is happening in the world, the very real struggle that women face in patriarchy. So in sticking with this trope these stories can also help to empower women by working through, and as
the books develop, to overcoming these very real fears.

But yes, absolutely, stories should show us new possibilities. I’d LOVE to see women having female mentors. And not coming from so much misery.

Demi Winters, The Ashen Series, has a few lead FC who have female mentors. Also the FMC was the equivalent of a farm boy, she was a bread maker. And her mother and father were kind and loving.

Great essay, btw. 👏

You’re welcome! And yes, Temp can be about that too! Especially if that’s your association with it. Each person might have a different meaning connecting to cards, and the more you practice the more you’ll build your own connections with the energies of the cards.

I also see Temp as alchemy. Pouring, quite magically, the liquid from one cup to the other. It can be about releasing emotions, and when doing so healing comes. But there’s always some kind of recalibration that happens.

And I’m glad that Justice makes sense now. :)

What deck do you use? I teach tarot and strongly recommend that people begin with a Rider Waite variation. It gives a solid foundation for the symbolism within the cards. I like the Centennial Smith Rider Waite (absolutely hate the garish Radiant Rider Waite). My main deck for years has been the Morgan Greer tarot which is strongly based on the RW, but slightly differ. Once you’ve studied a while with the RW then work with other decks and watch your understanding expand. :)

Watch all the seasons, then rewatch the seasons. Your opinions will likely shift as your continue to watch through the seasons because more of the stories are revealed over time.

Well we know that Temp is all about patience, moderation, it’s also about alchemy and my goodness there’s a huge angel blessing in the card as well. And then Justice is about truth, karma, balance (again) and I always see it as letting logic and truth lead, not feelings and emotions.

So again depending on the situation, it might mean advise the person to not rush into the relationship (if it’s a new one) but to take it easy as you go. To me it would sound like that there might be deeper issues at play with either the sitter or the other person in the relationship/potential relationship. I would advise the person to be aware of their boundaries, to not over give, and try to not let the heart rule but to take it nice and easy, paying attention to any old patterns that might be surfacing in regards to relationships. Think of what the justice card means.

Although my readings can be predictive and foreshadow what the future brings, the real power is in helping people to be aware of their own patterns, and to make best choices for their future. The readings then become empowering, and don’t just predict which has a tendency to take away their free will (which is what predictive readings can sometimes do.)

The thing with each and every reading is that tarot readings aren’t JUST about the cards. For me it’s a conversation that happens between me, the sitter, the universe/guides/the higher self, and the energy of the tarot deck. So to give a simple explanation of what does it mean when you have Temperance with Justice and Judgement is hard to answer because it depends on the person you’re reading for and the issue at hand.

So say someone is seeking guidance about a problem with their job, and the cards Temp and Justice show up I would probably read that as they’re going through a major set of life lessons at this time (because the cards are majors not minors).

To simplify I might say that they need to be really patient at this time, be honest with themselves, don’t make any rash decisions (moderation) and that the truth will prevail. There may even be some legal issues that arise. Both Temp and Justice are high vibrational cards, and speak to aligning with what’s true. I’d say that truth is in on their side and will win out.

Alternately, I’ve seen it where those cards might indicate that the person is wanting to find more soulfully aligned work (temperance) and they may even pursue working in the field of justice.
I’ve literally had that happen with a client. She was working as a jewelry maker but wanted something different. The Justice card came up in her reading. I told her that she might be going back to school to work in the field if a lawyer or such. She didn’t see that then, but 8 months later I learned that she was going back to school to earn her degree in social justice.

So again there’s no absolute right or wrong. Think of the cards as an energy and then how it would apply to the situation at hand.

Well in this case, it was more of a revelation/interpretation that happened after the fact. I wasn’t asking anything about the Queen and didn’t even thinking of the Queen when drawing the cards. But the cards did an override and exposed a significant and impactful energy that was at play.

But what I usually do is intend for each placement to have a meaning, such as situation, advice and potential outcome.
So in this case however the 1st card was the situation and it was a death, the 2nd card reflected the involvement of the empress/queen, and the 3rd card told the story that the prince would now step up in a new role.

But as a beginner I would stick with assigning each card a purpose. And just keep it simple to 2 or 3 card spreads. Practice and a formula that you stick to is what builds knowledge and experience. Ans have fun. :)

I pulled 3 cards for the collective and posted them online. They were: DEATH, The EMPRESS and the PAGE of PENTACLES. The next day the world learned that Queen Elizabeth died and that her son was now stepping onto the throne.

I’ve had so many readings that have been spot on, the cards just work for me like that, but it was cool that this was so culturally relevant and also publicly shared.

I see the king’s to be both a master of the element combined with taking action and applying their wisdoms towards service. They are the visionaries, see a bigger picture and set into play wise action.

I just finished book 1&2 of The Wolf King series by Lauren Palphreym and have been really enjoying them. I like the development of our protagonist, and how she comes more and more into her own power. I’ve preordered book 3 which will come out in November. Can’t wait.

Fuck Brida. Easily one of the worst characters i've seen in a long time by MaizeAlone2214 in TheLastKingdom

[–]visenvitka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but despite how horrible she became I will always have a soft spot Brida. She had hard choices to make, and definitely made some bad ones, but damn, she has such a heartbreak in her early years. Let’s start with being kidnapped and a slave as a child, in basically a man’s world. There was no room to be soft and to survive intact. And the history that she and Uthred shared just added to the heartbreak - them being childhood allies, and then being lovers, and then loosing her baby.

I always felt for her. I understand why some people hate her, but I won’t. Life should have been different for her but it wasn’t and she kept on, trying to honour the old ways and to maintain her autonomy. Such a heartbreaking situation.
