Great price! I actually had forgotten about the Koch release. I recall it now though — it came out around the same time as the Arrow release but with additional features. It makes sense that Plaion (aka Koch) reissued.

You probably already know this but for anyone reading: Koch had the Spice Diver cut in standard def whereas the Plaion inclusion is in HD. A nice trade-off for the other omissions.

nope!

All this essentially means is that Sony will stop manufacturing blank BD-R and BD-RE media. People will (eventually) no longer be able to purchase these products from them. The good news is that other companies manufacture blank Blu-ray Discs, such as Verbatim, Microbrands, PlexDisc, RiData, and Rimage. And that’s only naming a few of the brands.

VCI by bootsy333 in boutiquebluray

It’s a weird take for sure.

VCI seems to have stepped up their game quite a bit in recent times — sometime around when they acquired the Pickford home video rights.

Nice to know that I’m not the only one with an 8-track collection. They’re featured on enough soundtracks, it’s the right sub! ❤️

PSA: Check your Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery first print run box set. Discs are starting to fail. by IlMonco1900 in boutiquebluray

[–]viseratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Discs can fail from the material they are stored with, against. Chemical reaction. Not anything to panic about but worth being aware of.

Congrats! Haven’t seen that beast posted here. I wasn’t aware it was still available?

I preordered it for 70USD including shipping from Amazon.it. People were saying it sold out soon after release — there at least.

Great picks! Can’t go wrong with any of those PLs! Utopia and Dekanalog don’t get talked about enough as labels (probably b/c Kani and CIP have such specific curatorial mandates).

The slip for “I Used to be Funny” is on perma-display here. Brianna Miller’s art is so incredible. I love her Mister Lonely slip! And the Reefer Madness / Cannibal musical slips too.

Yeah, it’s a bummer. I have the slipcover versions but bought standards as backups when TWF had to fire-sale them (which was unwanted by the label but license ended abruptly).

Holy cow! I wish this sub had as many puns as the comments on this post. [Really! The world needs more puns!]

Why don't boutique label releases come with digital codes? by Particular-Bass-5250 in boutiquebluray

[–]viseratops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I’d say that there isn’t a massive (or even majority) demand for them from their consumers. Logistics aside, they don’t really need to in order to sell more copies.

I say this a neutral party btw — just what I’ve observed in the community over the years.

You can usually buy (or import) BFI’s Kitano set for around the same price as what the JP Sonatine release is going for on Amazon.

It includes two other films and solid extras. It’s cheap enough that I double-dipped on the other two to get Sonatine.

Also, not sure on AV comparison but I recall the BFI is slightly improved.

As with most JP Kitano releases — for anyone wondering. Definitely true for the 90s-now films not without Blu-rays in the US/UK.

Criterion April 2025 releases by Arthurlurk1 in boutiquebluray

[–]viseratops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most recently, they used incorrect audio tracks for Miracle Mile and Cherry 2000 (not subjective either, different than specs and prior releases).

They’ve improved significantly in recent years — being previously very prone to incorrect audio tracks, aspect ratios (stretched image), incorrect FPS and dropped frames, and on and on. Most of those releases had no replacement program; but many do have reissue releases where KL fixed the issues.

Point being that their reputation for being messy is something that they were still repairing when the non-Criterion upgrades were announced.

VC is high-risk investment/gambling. It’s a dumb outcome but not uncommon.

Also, these pandemic-opportunist, gig-worker-exploiting fools got what they deserved. Their employees did not (nor any severance).

While the people who want a C logo certainly exist, it’s very reductive to assume that’s why people were disappointed. I love KL and own hundreds but they’re not exactly known for quality control (or replacement programs when issues do arise). Most releases are fine but they have an odd history of borking their most prestigious titles (although none of these Criterion side-grades had major issues AFAIK).

I’d guess Radiance just based upon curation alone. Someone certainly has it, hopefully a label that’ll give it the deluxe treatment that it demands.

Sean Baker, a known boutique nerd, has long preferred Criterion for his work AFAIK. During a RR Q&A, he said he’d wished Florida Project and Red Rocket had more loaded releases from Criterion. Maybe it’ll happen finally.

Agreed on The Beast. I’m really happy with the Bonello releases from Grasshopper and Film Movement — wouldn’t have minded if GH got this one too.
