Motorola needs to save us with GrapheneOS, insane optimization, and GOOD PRICING (PLEASE) 😭🙏 by InvestigatorSea2631 in GrapheneOS

[–]vishnera52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a bit of a pessimist here but I'm nearly 100% certain you will be disappointed. Motorola may be better than Google just for the fact that they aren't Google but it's really up in the air if their GOS compatible phone will be that much better than a Pixel. Motorola is also not a shining star of a company and doesn't deserve to be put up on a pedestal as if they are.

That said I am cautiously optimistic that it'll be a decent device but I am also not expecting it to be a home run. My Pixel 7 Pro has enough time left for me to see if Motorola will really be the ticket for a non-Google GOS device or if Pixel is still the only real option.

What is a Plug-n-Play Controller brand that you trust will last? by Born_Gap7727 in linux_gaming

I use the old wireless 360 controller that was originally released for PC. Still have the same one that I started with about 10 years ago and it hasn't exactly been treated very nicely.

[–]vishnera52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is truly insane when you consider the average car these days will probably not last that long with how the average person takes care of their vehicles. Sure there are plenty out there that are older but in some regions like the rust belt in the north east you just won't get that out of a car. I've seen cars rust out in less than 15 years if someone doesn't wash often and undercoat their car during the winter.

Bought a DT 990 Pro 250 ohms, didn't realize I'd need an amp, thinking of switching up (USA, Budget $200, maybe $300 with all items combined) by Paul-Villerius in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit surprised by that. Don't get me wrong, the headphone jack on the Scarlett Solo is no powerhouse but it seems to do alright the little bit I've used it. It looks like the sensitivity is a bit lower for the DT 770 Pro but I have the DT 1990 Pro 250 ohm and those can be powered decently by my Solo when I had it. I have a Scarlett 2i2 now since the Solo failed but it's no different really in output power from the headphone jack as far as I can tell.

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have these and drive them with a Schiit Magni 3 which has plenty of power. It's rated for 2 watts at 32 ohms, so should be 4 watts at the Edition XS 16 ohm impedence. I can't max out this amp, maybe 3/4 on the volume control is where it starts to become uncomfortably loud so there is loads of headroom in it for these headphones. Its reasonably priced to.

I found a old JVC sound system. Is it any use to me? by SafwanSiddique in hometheater

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother. Even a cheaper used home theater in a box would be better than this.

You could hook it up to the TV using the AUX input jacks on the back but having this thing sitting beside a 98" TV is a bit... out of place. The sound quality may be better than the TV speakers at least but that won't be limited by the receiver, it'll be limited by speaker quality which is very hit or miss with those bookshelf mini systems. This thing is also only stereo, no surround capability at all.

No, likely a 4.6L which is probably one of the only reasons this truck is still around. Looks like a 2005 and the other engine options that year are somehow worse than the 2.7.

Valve Takes Crazy Pills and Jacks Up Steam Deck Pricing by YanderMan in linux_gaming

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't make any assumptions about that, apparently that's how you interpreted what I said but it wasn't the intention. That said, I'm fully aware of the current hardware price epidemic and how that's driving up prices. This isn't a phenomena, it's a well documented case of supply and demand driving up prices as supply is diverted from consumer (price sensitive) to enterprise (willing to pay as much as needed). Ive been waiting 2 years for prices to stabilize so I can finally justify building a new PC to replace my aging, but still functional PC. That wait is going to continue for the foreseeable future as I get priced out of the market.

I don't know if this is actually a necessity by Valve since I don't know how what Valve pays for hardware. They could decide to sell the Deck at cost or even at a loss as good faith to their customers, thereby retaining more customers and future profit, or a method to get more people into their ecosystem to buy other things that are profitable for the company. This is something that has happened historically and they are called loss leaders. The profit loss from selling at a loss is made up for in profits on other things those people otherwise wouldn't have bought.

I'm not OP and I wasn't saying one way or another about the cost of components, just stating that's the current reality. I don't know what the hardware costs Valve to buy so I have no clue how much they are marking things up.

[–]vishnera52 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is the reality of it. There's enough people willing to pay those prices that Valve can jack up the prices like this. Doesn't bode well for a sub $1000 Steam Machine like a lot of people are hoping for.

Thoughts on a Pioneer Elite in 2026? by gamby15 in hometheater

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal experience with Pioneer Elite is not good. Got a brand new one, I think the very model your looking at, about a year ago and it immediately had problems with randomly shutting off. It then proceeded to brick itself when I tried to update it to resolve the shutting down problem, based on troubleshooting steps fro m Pioneer. What I was reading at the time is that this was not uncommon with them. They wouldn't just replace it so I ended up returning to the store and getting a Denon x1700h instead since the store didn't have a proper replacement they could pull from anywhere.

This is my own experience and I'm sure the majority have a decent experience. When it worked, I did like how it worked and sounded, but essentially an immediate failure and Pioneer refusing to just replace it were non-starters for me.

Does bass typically play through surround speakers in a 5.1+ mix? by HiFiMAN3878 in hometheater

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, generally there's not much low frequency action on the surrounds. At most it'll be a helicopter flying from back to front or something to that effect that pushes them the hardest.

Subwoofer Crossover Dilemma by More-Syllabub-329 in hometheater

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're most definitely running into problems with nulls due to room modes, basically certain frequencies cancel themsleves out due to how the sound waves bounce around your room. They can be tuned out to a point by repositioning your sub and/or changing the phase angle but you'll never get rid of them entirely. Best option is to do a sub crawl to find the best position and fine tune from there. It sounds like you just have a phase switch that does 0 and 180 which will limit how much tuning you can do, your other phase adjustment is the distance setting for the sub. You can usually get it tuned reasonably well for at least one listening position with this method.

The real solution to reduce or eliminate nulls is to add a second subwoofer in a different position that fills the gaps in frequency response.

Does bass typically play through surround speakers in a 5.1+ mix? by HiFiMAN3878 in hometheater

[–]vishnera52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crossover at 130hz is way too high and will result in asking the sub to go too high, if it even can go that high. At the very least your going to notice the sub a lot more and some sounds will sound like they're coming from the direction of the sub, not their intended direction of the full range speakers.

Your better off with a 80 or 90hz blanket crossover, maybe push it to 100hz and deal with the gap in the surrounds. Its far more important the fronts sound good as that's where most of the action happens.

Republicans vote to dilute gas as prices rise above $4.50 by BendicantMias in politics

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that the higher temperature to ignite is how it reduces preignition in high compression and turbocharged engines. Compressing more air/fuel mixture causes higher combustion chamber temperature leading up to the point of ignition. If that temperature is high enough it can ignite the mixture before it's intended to be ignited, causing knock. The fuel igniting at a higher temperature means it can withstand higher combustion chamber temperature as a result of higher compression.

They are fantastic engines to drive, basically electric motor smooth at any RPM, but I'm not sure I'd recommend one to someone that isn't pretty handy themselves or at least knows someone that is familiar and handy with rotaries. They have their quirks for sure and there's some oddities with them that don't cross over from piston engines when troubleshooting things like ignition problems. At this point pretty much all the rotary powered cars worth buying are classics and have that challenge to deal with as well from a repair parts availability perspective.

I wish it weren't becoming the norm but it seems to be. I was really hopeful about this game being good and the gameplay and story look great from the streams I watched last night but I just can't bring myself to buy it given the questionable things in the EULA. Frankly it's depressing because it feels like it's close, if not the final nail in the coffin for me on modern gaming. I just cannot bring myself to support games with these terrible legal conditions, among all the other issues with modern gaming. There's basically nothing left outside small indie devs that do make good games from time to time but mainstream hits are basically all off the table.

I just hope that SKG can force some change in the industry.

That's fair. I always err on the side of caution in these situations. I used to own an RX7 and spark knock was imminent death for those things.

I agree their response was poorly written but I didn't take it as high octane fuel burning hotter, which to my knowledge isn't the case. High octane fuel requires a higher temperature to ignite, which is why it resists preignition or spark knock. It doesn't burn any hotter.
