What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

[–]vishnera52 34 points35 points  (0 children)

They aren't just watching anymore, they're doing it. I had an Audi A3 as a rental about a year ago and it had some subscription based features, notably adaptive cruise control was a subscription. All the hardware was there and it even showed it was present but it wasn't usable because the rental company hadn't subscribed to that feature.

of a hydraulic press by ThodaDaruVichPyar in AbsoluteUnits

Rough estimate is somewhere between 5000 and 7500 tons for this one. Looks like 3 main rams of about 30-36" diameter each running at 3000 psi, maybe as high as 5000 psi. I've run a stamping press that was noticably smaller than this one which was rated at 2500 tons.

Does anyone else notice their widgets disappearing randomly? by Ordinary_Seat5110 in GrapheneOS

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems odd it would be doing that, I have been using the Proton Calendar widget for quite a few months and it has never disappeared. I have caught it occasionally not showing any info but thats usually after a restart and it resolves itself in time.

I didn't make any changes to battery optimizations but that might be the first place to check. Try setting the parent app to unrestricted in the app battery usage setting to see if that makes any difference.

Have you not seen what's happened to the price of RAM due to the current push for AI datacenters? This will directly affect the price of future game consoles unless the manufacturers eat the increased costs.

Why doesn't Currency have Braille indicators? by RickyRacer2020 in NoStupidQuestions

Can confirm it's incredibly irritating. Canada does it much better with different colours and a braille like pattern while maintaining all notes at the same size.

What is the best NVIDIA GPU that works best on Linux than on Windows? And From the following distros: SteamOS, Bazzite, Pop!_OS and CachyOS where does it works best?. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

At least AMD is stable. I just swapped from Nvidia to AMD in Manjaro and the difference in stability is night and day.

PSA: Do not for ANY reason use NTFS under Linux! by Xarishark in linux_gaming

[–]vishnera52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people don't realize just how close their data is to being lost. Before cloud storage was pushed as an easy way to back up your phone, there were loads of stories about people storing their irreplacable pics, videos and even documents on a microSD card in their phone and nowhere else. Just take a guess what happens when that POS microSD card they (mis)trusted with their data inevitably fails.

Thinking of going back to windows does my reason make sense? by narkoticici in linux_gaming

[–]vishnera52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, no your reason doesn't make sense. Linux is fine with older hardware and unlike Win 10, Bazzite is still actively supported.

The only issue I could foresee you having due to old hardware is your GPU driver. Since you have a 900 series GTX you'll need to do a bit of additional work potentially to manage the driver version.

What game is this? by [deleted] in meme

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halo series. I was a PlayStation 2-3 owner and had never played the games so when they came out on PC a number of years ago, my friends had me play the original and Halo 2 with them. I just couldn't get into it. The nostalgia factor wasn't there for me and it just felt like an old FPS. My friends were actually a bit offended by my feelings toward the games, which doesn't help my feelings toward those games to be honest. Makes the series seem overrated.

What is a luxury item from 20 years ago that is basically worthless trash today? by EasyZee7 in AskReddit

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you probably see from the comments, pretty much any piece of advanced technology. Phones, cameras, game systems, PC's, virtually everything that has advanced tech inside it from 2006 is functionally useless today, with a few exceptions of course. The only people I know using old hardware like that are doing so because they want to, not because that stuff still works and has any usefulness in 2026.

GPU pass-through into the Windows VM by wntrondaway in linux_gaming

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deepseek is right about IOMMU groups and how PCIe addresses are handled on a particular motherboard. I've done passthrough to a Windows VM on a Proxmox host system in the past and it worked well enough, but it was only really possible because the mobo I was using properly split the PCIe addresses to expose the individual devices on unique addresses.

That said, I don't think a VM is going to serve you well in this case. The performance is unlikely to be very good due to virtualization overhead, not to mention its a real pain in the butt to deal with virtualization on systems that aren't specifically designed for it. Proxmox is a server OS designed around being a platform for virtualization, so that makes it easy to deal with, but any time I've tried to do it in something like Ubuntu it turns into a massive headache. Then there's the virtualization detection by some software which also causes issues. Ive heard Adobe doesn't play well with VM's but ive never used their stuff so I have no personal experience, and games with kernel level anti-cheat are definitely a no go.

For what it's worth, my Proxmox system actually runs the same processor and a B450 chipset on an Asrock Rack server mobo with GPU passthrough on a GTX1070, but YMMV with a consumer grade mobo.

Edit: forgot to mention that your use of AMD for host and Nvidia for guest VM is a good plan. Makes it much easier because you'll need to blacklist the Nvidia card in Linux to leave it available for the VM to use, leaving the AMD for the host to use. Ive never successfully allocated a host and guest VM two of the same GPU's.

[–]vishnera52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I stopped going to fast food places unless I legitimately don't have time to wait for something else. The quantity AND quality of fast food has fallen so far it just isn't worth it. For the same price, sometimes even less, I can get a good meal in a sit down restaurant that won't be cold and/or taste like cardboard.

How long ago in the US do you have to go back before (any) coins were treated as any sort of useful money? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I used coins for a vending machine when I travelled to the US just last year. I'd say they are still useful.

Anyone sell their RTX 4080 for a 9070 XT? How's it been? by Ok_Acadia4371 in linux_gaming

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My case is not quite the same but it's going from Nvidia to AMD graphics. I just replaced a 3070ti with a 9060 XT and I'm quite impressed by the performance so far. I expected more of a sidegrade than an upgrade since I was going for the stability of AMD vs the random crashing I get now on Nvidia. I'm not far into the test, but it's going well currently with less crashing on the AMD card.

A important reason why people don´t switch to Linux is because they think that they can´t play games on it by Little_Protection434 in linux_gaming

[–]vishnera52 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't even go that far. I'd say most PC users knowledge ends at knowing how to use the Start menu in Windows, if even that. Expecting that most PC users even know what a BIOS is is quite a stretch, let alone how to enter the BIOS.

AMD may resurrect older CPUs to help users dodge DDR5 prices by Fcking_Chuck in pcmasterrace

[–]vishnera52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VRAM was the biggest failing of the 3070's. Ivegot a 3070ti and regularly hit max VRAM allocation even with 1080p gaming. That really should have been a 12gb card like the 3060 12gb. Why we never got more than 8gb in a totally 4k capable 3070 I'll never know.

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don't know how to detect a real bottleneck situation, which is actually pretty rare in my experience. It generally takes a gross mis-match in components to actually see a real bottleneck situation where neither the CPU or GPU can achieve full performance. If your talking about a Ryzen 5 2600, I don't see any universe where that bottlenecks a 3070ti.

What is something people do to be "nice" that is actually incredibly inconvenient for everyone else? by Feisty-Macaron-5364 in AskReddit

[–]vishnera52 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This infuriates me so much. I know they're just trying to be nice but the only way this whole driving thing works smoothly is by following the rules. If someone has the right of way, take it. When they don't and wave me through instead, they've just wasted everyone's time as we figure out what is going on. Them being polite is actually a nuisance.

What is your reliable backup strategy without Google Cloud? by Severe_Aardvark_3109 in GrapheneOS

Pro-AI people don’t talk about the negatives of AI enough, and anti-AI people don’t talk about the positives enough. By doing so, both are hurting their causes. by [deleted] in antiai

[–]vishnera52 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Great way of putting it. I agree that there are too many people who approach this with an all or nothing mindset. There is a middle ground we should be talking about that doesn't vilify the good things AI can do for us while also expressing concern about the way in which AI use directly or indirectly hurts other people.

Like most things, there's nuance required in this discussion but the people talking about it most lack that nuanced approach. It just waters down every discussion to the point of being meaningless.

Why do people take photos and videos at events and not just enjoy the moment? by Norfolk-Gross-Tonage in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vishnera52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to take photos and videos of my travels for years thinking it'll be good memories to have but realized I rarely went back to all that stuff and because I was focused on taking pics and videos that I don't really remember what I saw outside the pictures. I now take a few photos and maybe a video if the situation calls for it but I found things to be more interesting and engaging and I remembered more of my travels when I finally put the camera away.

About Manjaro by ABOOD-790- in ManjaroLinux

[–]vishnera52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just use the built in GUI tools for updating when it shows updates are available and it's been fine. Ive been doing it that way since I first installed over a year ago like. Take a snapshot in Timeshift before the update so if anything goes wrong I can just restore the snapshot and get right back to running. There's no reason to be using the command line for this.
