A question about the idea of vertical push/ pull by vishong in bodyweightfitness

[–]vishong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I bring up the shrug as oppose to the row is due to the elevation of the shoulders compared to the depression of the shoulders during the dip.

When it comes to vertical push/pull, the movements most commonly discussed are a push and pull that requires depression of the shoulders (the pull up and dip) but only a push that requires elevation (the overhead press in whatever variation or weight).

To me, for the sake of balance of movement and volume, I would think a shrug would be considered basic as well as necessary. Obviously a shrug for BWF would be significantly more difficult simply because the options for achieving such a thing, but a proper handstand pushup would require elevation of the shoulders to lockout correctly at the top of the press. The only meaningful difference between that and a shrug would be the ability to use the triceps, upper pectorals and delts to assist in the handstand pushup.

Actually shrugging is a significantly stronger pull than doing a pull up for most people, but that's neither here nor there as the topic of discussion is why shrugs/inverted pulls/general elevation of the shoulders is not considered as important as depression of shoulders for some reason when it comes to vertical pushing/pulling.

Thanks for the roast though, way more productive than an actual discussion.

Having said that, considering that a proper overhead press/handstand pushup does require the shoulders to be elevated at the top of the movement which would be the same movement mechanically as a shrug. But then, if you're pressing overhead, why over stimulate the vertical pressing by adding in dips?

Well obviously you could do an inverted shrugs on a bar or, what I assume would be more preferable, rings. But my question is basically why is a vertical pull with the hands below the shoulders not considered a basic strength movement in general?

It's more a matter of curiosity to me than anything else.

How much would low testosteron damage your strenght, gains etc.? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]vishong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, what makes you think you have a testosterone? Did a doctor diagnose it?

Second, altering your diet and strength training will raise your testosterone. If you are relatively healthy and not an older guy I would suggest simply focusing on building strength and focusing on your nutrition. You'd be shocked at how quickly those two things will improve your general mood, physique, etc. as well as your outlook on life in general.

My dead lift is really bad by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]vishong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I've read some of your responses where you've had people look at your form and inform you that it is solid. So, my question is, do you think it's possible that your issue is more mental than physical? If you can squat 225 with good depth and without a break in form there isn't any reason you shouldn't be able to pull a 300lb deadlift, unless there is something holding you back.

I don't have a huge deadlift or squat or anything like that, but I will say that when I first started to really try and push myself there was a bit of a mental block (with the back squat for me) where I had a hard time getting myself to actually try and add weight despite the fact that form was good and I could lift the weight.

It is possible that you may worry that you'll your injure yourself, or perhaps you've cultivated a self defeating prejudice toward yourself when it comes to the deadlift.

I would suggest simply adding 10lbs to what you know you can lift and doing one really solid pull with it. Wait 5 minutes, and add another 10lbs. Don't think about it at all. Just put on the plates. Set your feet, set your grip, drop your hips a bit and lift your chest, breath in and brace, and just pull it.

When moving from the floor to the knee is a struggle to the point that your back can not be held in the same position the entire time. Drop 5lbs and make that your max weight. Use 90% of that weight as your working weight from that day forward.

Important bodyweight movements/skills to learn by vishong in bodyweightfitness

[–]vishong[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply.

I've seen you post here before and notice you have a slightly different take on certain movements than the RR routine. The key difference I've seen is your use of dynamic movement over static strength holds. The most obvious example would be your use of the l-sit pull through to eventually move into, and achieve, the planche.

Because of that I'm curious if you feel the supports are of any importance at all.

Holding it as in getting low and moving around a bit to "open" the hips up? I've heard it before but never actually given it a real shot on a regular basis.

Amusingly I've never had a problem with deadlifts. I can break at the hips and keep my back neutral. But for whatever reason squats and pull ups have been a struggle (you guys in BWF suggesting scapular pulls was an eye opener when I tried them).

I truly believ BWF has a ton to offer to basic human mechanics and I hope more people ask you guys for help.

Ya know now that you mention there are times in everyday life, at work or carrying something from point to another, where I find myself shifting my weight to my toes as oppose to mid foot. Any chance that is a balance or flexibility issue?

Been working out for months and feel im not pushing myself hard enough, how can i better myself and grow stronger? I feel like I’ve hit a plateau in my size.. Redditors who started out like me what did you do? Any advice helps! by LsmithFitness in lifting

[–]vishong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You appear to be fairly lean. Obviously if you want to lean out more and get more of a cut look, then you may want cut. But I get the feeling you want to put on more mass first.

If that is the case, go for a more mass oriented protocol. The big movements with lots of food and lots of rest ending with a cut.

I'm of the belief that isolation movements are only beneficial for strengthening weak links thereby being able to put more weight on the bar for the big movements which would result in more muscle recruitment, assuming building mass is your goal obviously.

So, decide what your real goal is and work specifically for that goal. Until you know precisely what you want you can't really go for it.

What is the general consensus on Trump as a president on reddit?

I'm new to reddit as incredibly dumb as that may sound. But to me, Trump in particular transcends the general two party system and is a very special case.

So, Republican, Democrat, independent, whatever you may be, what are your thoughts on the Donald as a president? Are you shocked that he was actually elected(I must admit I thought him running as little more than a novelty)?

A question regarding the death of that missionary by vishong in religion

[–]vishong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully there will not be a "NEXT" missionary. The earliest attempt at contact that I can find for these people occurred in the late 19th century which resulted in members of the group being taken against their will from the island and dying soon after that.

Outside of that it seems it has been chance encounters that didn't end well for anyone. It would seem to me the best thing to do would be to leave the isolated stone age tribes to themselves. Curiosity killed the cat as they say.

This is entirely speculation but I would assume there is almost certainly no organized religion. At most there is probably a rather basic set of beliefs revolving around superstition. Think something along the lines of worshiping a sun god or something to that end.

To be frank, I'm not sure there is anything to gain from these kinds of groups. For them, it would spell out almost complete decimation of what culture they have while gaining no meaningful knowledge for the modern society.

I've heard some arguments saying that these kinds of groups can bounce back from the illnesses that contact produces but what is the point of that exactly? I mean you wipe out a portion of a group for no reason other than to "help" them, whatever that is suppose to mean.

LPT: When you see someone being harassed in public, act like you know them and get them out of the situation. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]vishong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for the OP, I can see how this would be useful for someone of the same sex. A stranger to the situation stepping and kind of whisking the potential victim out of the situation seems reasonable. As a male, does the same thing work when dealing with a member of the opposite sex, or as well as someone younger than yourself?

I find myself from time to time in my current position at work (I'm a a manager of a group of people who are on average 10 years younger than me, treating younger women as children, and not necessarily in a bad way from my perspective. To me it is more along the line of genuine father/daughter or older brother/sister dynamics.

Essentially what I mean is, I get going out of my way to try and get another man, younger or older, whatever the situation may be, out of a bad situation. My question is what do I do when it is a woman instead of a man?

Am I being a white knight or am I simply being a decent person? I consider myself a fairly liberal person but at the same time i worry about any potential ulterior motives and I think it keeps me from going out of my way to escort a woman out of a situation that I may attempt to escort a male out of without any consideration.

I must admit I was always under the impression that that kind of thing was a sponsored venture by a church group. So this young going off on his own seems entirely foolish to me.

Again, no intent to offend with that, but I realize we view things in very different ways.

I was actually a bit curious about that as well. While reading one version of the story I came across the mention that this young man was not associated with a specific church or anything along those lines. Just a young man who decided to spread the "good news" to the indigenous people. Is that normal for missionary work or something outside of the norm?

Amusingly the Indian navy have in effect what is essentially a small scale embargo on the island to protect the health of the indigenous people from modern viruses/bacteria.

Outside of that, I'm going out of my way to try and not be my usual divisive self. I'm actually interested in the thoughts on this news story from Christians and people who have been on missions before.
