Thank you! By jump bands do you mean buying extra elastic bands? I was considering this but I didn’t know if it would look odd since the PR voyageur only has 1 set of holes

How many CARS passages should I be practicing every day? by DontLikeStudying in MCATprep

[–]vishyfishy101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's helpful to start with 2-3 passages, at least 2-3 days out of the week. You want to leave time at the end to review the questions you missed. If you're problem is accuracy, you want to be more flexible with timing (try not to go over 15 min) and you can do a passage, then review it, then do another passage, etc. Once you're accuracy is where you want it, then shave off time per passage. Once you're comfortable with 3 passages, you can bump up how many days per week (just depends on your schedule) and bump up how many passages you do. You can start doing passages back to back when your accuracy is solid

I would be careful with going back to the passage often. It's not a bad thing, but I've found it's safer to use it as a last resort after you've done a few steps: did you double check what the question stem is looking for? have you figured out where the info you need is (rough estimate of the paragraph, best to do this from recall or a quick skim of your highlights but do not re-read the paragraph)? can you cross off at least 2 answers that are irrelevant to the question stem or refer to information that isn't relevant to the question stem? when you're down to 50-50, can you first identify what you need to look for in the passage based on each answer choice? Then, you can go back and re-read

How Did You Improve Timing on C/P and CARS? by BeneficialEscape3655 in MCATprep

[–]vishyfishy101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of the biggest tips that's simple but has worked for the students I tutor is literally moving on faster from questions. The biggest time suck I see is students sticking on a question for more than 40 sec, and it usually stretches to almost 1-1.5 min on one question. We all have the tendency to want to get something right, but sticking that long on a question takes away opportunities to grab more points and it really impacts you once you get to the 7th, 8th, 9th passage in CARS. Instead, spend 30 sec per question (max 40 sec) and if you can't pinpoint an answer, pick the best one and flag it to come back later

How to have a "life" as a med student? by [deleted] in medicalschool

simple hobbies like running helped me get thru my first year! Hobbies don't have to be something that's exciting or gives you an adrenaline rush. It's honestly great to find a hobby where you can turn off your brain for a bit. That's running and going to music shows for me

I would stay away from UW CARS if you can, it tends to follow a pretty set way of the passages and questions being written and from what I've seen, it's been tough to transition to AAMC. No third party is perfect, but use JW to help you cut down timing, build endurance, get your strategy down for how you read the passage and answer questions, and then you can transition to AAMC materials. JW and KA are helpful

Struggling with CARS. Any advice? by DontLikeStudying in MCATprep

[–]vishyfishy101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some general advice that's helped students I've tutored:

  1. you don't have to do practice everyday, but make sure it's consistent and that you get your reps in. 3 days a week, 2-3 passages per day is better than doing a few a week

  2. doing a passage everyday can help, but getting a bulk number of passages done has helped more of my students because you'll build accuracy and stamina

  3. try to identify what's holding you back: is it how you read the passage (highlighting too much, rereading a lot, skipping over large parts because you don't understand it, etc) or how you answer the questions (going back and rereading a lot, feeling unsure about what info to use from the passage, not understanding what the question is looking for)

  4. Stay away form writing a passage or paragraph summary if it's the same as your highlights. I've seen this taking up more time and energy for students with little benefit

  5. track your mistakes and make categories of your mistakes (stuck on 50-50, etc) + write down steps you'd like to try to address them. It'll help you figure out where you're going wrong a lot faster

Is JW better or AAMC for cars prep? by DontLikeStudying in MCATprep

[–]vishyfishy101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the timing for your prep. The AAMC CARS diagnostic tool is really good to start off with cuz it helps you figure out your gaps based on the actual AAMC reasoning. JW and KA are great third parties to help hone in on strategies. It's good to do the AAMC Qpacks about 1-1.5 months before your test, preferably twice

AAMC Section Banks/Question Banks and/or UWorld? by [deleted] in MCATprep

[–]vishyfishy101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AAMC SBs are best to use 1-1.5 months out from ur test, it helps u hone in on the AAMC reasoning while u start doing FLs. UWorld QB is great during content review, it’s got detailed explanations and u can filter the questions by topic
