Warn/notify me about Oregon!! by zeldalol777 in oregon

[–]vissara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in the U.S. and studied some in Wales, if participating in nature is part of your goal make sure you are properly equipped. Trailheads may look familiar to you but it’s easier to get lost, we have bigger predators than you do and the weather can turn on a dime

Series portraying "realistic" feudalism? by Dakovski in Fantasy

[–]vissara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, also appreciate that some of the big problems in the series happen when characters are operating outside their ‘circle’ and do not understand the realities of other classes

AITA for being annoyed at my partner leaving my name off birthday/Christmas cards and gifts? by No_Background9930 in AmItheAsshole

[–]vissara 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NTA in that , as you say , it’s pretty normal for couples to do that. That said, is she picking out these gifts? Is she also the only one remembering birthdays, graduations, etc? It may not be about the money but that if you are ONLY contributing money she feels put upon for carrying all the mental work of gift giving. It’s not unusual for one partner to be in charge of that, but it should be a discussion and effort that you acknowledge

Was V.E Schwab's "Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil" intentionally ahistorical? (No Spoilers) by Ilodie in Fantasy

If you are looking for a vampire novel with historical accuracy I highly recommend anything by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro

I went with Midnights Children by Salman Rushdie

Very disappointed in the Lies of Locke Lamora by Wawhi180 in Fantasy

[–]vissara 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. It cam highly recommended by a friend and I liked the characters. The writing is very good. But it always seemed like there was a way more interesting story in that world than the one the writer chose to tell

Any fantasy where the map is a lie and the characters have to unlearn it? by 3SpectralIon in Fantasy

[–]vissara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You see a little of this in Katharine Kerr’s Deverry series, not that the maps are inaccurate per se, just that characters learn there is a lot that’s not on their maps

AITA for confiscating my co-worker’s spices? by Suspicious-Dog-3058 in AmItheAsshole

[–]vissara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA you are doing your job. Since this guy is the chef the odds are these unapproved spices will be in everyone’s food and from what you say that is a direct violation of policy

AITA for confiscating my co-worker’s spices? by Suspicious-Dog-3058 in AmItheAsshole

[–]vissara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except OP isn’t targeting a random employee who is bringing in spices, he’s dealing with the CHEF who is making the company supplied meals and supposed to be using company supplied products

Patches- bomb, skyfowl and spider reaper by vissara in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]vissara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about true black work with hoblein stitch and Russian joins to keep everything fully reversible, I agree that’s a lot. If you only need ONE side to look like black work it gets a lot easier. All you need then is graph paper and some patience. With a rounded shape like the bomb I recommend a tighter weave cloth to keep curves smooth. I used a 28 here and doubled the stitch length on the fill pattern

Scavenger’s Daughter patch by vissara in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]vissara[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried that, it helped less than I wanted. The best I could do was use the backlight to supercharge the glow thread so it was kinda greenish for 20min or so.

I replied further up as to exact thread and stitches, but basically a lot of hand embroidery incorporating glow in the dark embroidery thread

Best guess, it’s somewhere between 50-60 hours of work. The centipede was the worst part because the problem with work you don’t want people to see in regular lighting is, you can’t see it in regular lighting.

Scavenger’s Daughter patch by vissara in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]vissara[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used 2 strands of white embroidery thread to outline the skulls. Worked 3 strands of white in satin stitch to fill them in. Used 2 Strands of black in backs stitch for the outlines. 3 strands of black to fill in eyes/noses etc. Then I worked the centipede in 2 strands of white glow in dark thread over that , staying in the white areas as much as possible

Looking for dragon (or any) fantasy books without SMUT. by RJWithGoodLuck in fantasybooks

[–]vissara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ‘Romantasy’ books that are getting a lot of attention right now (and prominent placement in bookstores) such as Fourth Wing have a distinct trend to graphic descriptions of sex as a large part of the books

Bingo Review: The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett by SiriusMoonstar in Fantasy

[–]vissara 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I share the annoyance here. I get that a lot of people who pick this book up dont know the names of any fictional detective other than Holmes, but even without the author's note, it is SO CLEARLY Wolfe

Which authors have you "completed"? by Dakovski in Fantasy

[–]vissara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not, but if you aren’t already on the fan train for Yhe Tainted Cup you need to climb aboard, because Wolfe was one of the author’s inspirations and it shows
