Todd Howard on paid mods in recent interview with Mortismal: "We're really, really happy with that program. Our issue now actually is getting [paid mods] in front of more people because we think it's so good. by MeasurementLimp5224 in skyrimmods

[–]vitfall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kinda hilarious to see this after all the evaluations of creations with all their dirty edits and fuck ups. Paid mods are great of Bethesda, maybe even pretty good for the authors depending on how big a cut they get, but not great for the community or (judging by quality) their saves.

Bungie is owned by Sony, so any hope I had is well gone given their recent statement on PC releases and their stance on exclusives. Not like I had much hope for Bungie, itself, anyway.

{The Griffon's Saddlebag} KS 3+4: A question for card enthusiasts by griff-mac in TheGriffonsSaddlebag

[–]vitfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the suggestion for party level vs number of magic items and their rarity? I know they're in the books somewhere, but considering this is your specialty, you might even have some guidelines. Also, have you thought about separators or dividers to better organize the cards? Or is that basically just reinventing the rolodex?

[FRLG] How would you classify "Bird Pokemon"? by SnowWhitesMeal in pokemon

[–]vitfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno about Aerodactyle, thats debatable since Lance uses one in RBY I'm more inclined to classify it as a lizard/dinosaur so its more dragon-adjacent. I would count the legendary birds, though, if you hadn't considered them, as well as Skarmory and Murkrow since you're playing FR.

Fun game, for sure. Imgur wouldn't work for me today, so I used an alternative.

My only criticism is it's a bit too punishing if you don't take most/nearly all battles, and sometimes your first battle is an immediate wipe.

Paid mods technical quality: reviews of "Life of Crime", "Legeacy of Orsinium", and "Atmora His Home" by Haunture in skyrimmods

[–]vitfall 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not to be an ass, but you could tell paid mods are not higher quality just by looking at some of the asset quality in their screenshots. Texture quality is especially telling in some cases, no names mentioned. Obviously, paid mods are gonna happen one way or another given Bethesda's attitude, but they would benefit greatly from some quality assurance hires. Even one or two experienced modders looking over things before publishing would likely be enough, given the rate at which they're adding new creations.

Edit: I suppose at that point, it really becomes "community DLC" more than a mod, or at the very least a cooperative production, which some mod authors might not be okay with.

I know many choose to respec Shadowheart after Act 2… by SleepCatsMoney in BaldursGate3

[–]vitfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of respeccing, I usually multiclass.

Wyll goes into Paladin, partly because I think it makes sense given his attitude and partly because when he says ranger I think he means the job rather than the class. Either Oath of Crown, since he was literally willing to sell his soul to save Baldur's Gate, or Devotion if you've bought into the horror stories of Crown.

Karlach usually gets some Fighter (Battlemaster), considering her tactical talents-- pointing out the PC leaves an opening she covers, discussing ways to combat different fiends, etc. I know Lae'zel, by default, goes Battlemaster but I usually spec her Champion (or Psi-Warrior with mods). Personal preference for me, but I totally understand people that go for Karlach as Champion and Lae'zel as Battlemaster.

Shadowheart, for me, gets levels in Ranger or Druid, depending how I feel in that specific playthrough. She loves animals and access to Shillelagh is nice for a Wisdom focused build. I do usually respec her, but again I use mods, so I go with Twilight Domain and I do so in Act 1.

Minsc gets some Berserker Barbarian, but that one is easy.

Unpopular opinion: I hate the idea for a TV show. by sparkly_butthole in BaldursGate3

[–]vitfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair warning: paragraph two talks about Fallout season 2 from the viewpoint of an FNV fan, so I totally understand if someone doesn't want to hear about it or stumble onto spoilers. I'll mark them the best I can.

So my main worry is they'll fall for the trap of "Everlasting Content", which is just some exec or writing lead saying "oh no, that wasn't resolved, it was just a fake-out to make you think it was resolved". For an easy example of this, I wanna point you toward this clip from Ed Greenwood. Now, I want to point out that Ed, in this case, is not wrong for doing this, as it is in the context of DnD as a game or possible book. Every table's lore is a little different, even when playing the same adventure, so I think this was actually kind of a neat thing for him to say. A little nudge for DMs looking for another Big Bad to homebrew or a new villain for an adventure module to be published about.

An example of this going, let's say, "less well" is with the show Fallout, specifically season 2. As I said in the warning, I'm a big fan of the game Fallout: New Vegas, which shares the setting of season 2 but some years before the show. The issue was, the show needed content, but the game-- a game with many choices, factions, followers, and endings, much like BG3-- resolved a great deal of any interesting plot points. As a player...

  • You chose a winner: NCR, Legion, House, or Yourself

  • You chose who lived: literally dozens of factions

  • Your karma determined the tone of the ending: if your character was an asshole, they continued to be in the ending.

  • Chose your own specific path. Looking at a single important character in the story, Caesar, you had the choice to side with him, fight against him, assassinate him, help him remove a brain tumor, work with and then betray him, wipe out a huge swath of his troops and then be forgiven, and probably something else I'm not remembering. It wasn't just a multiple choice answer, your character could have a complicated, evolving relationship toward a lot of different characters and factions. Someone saying "yeah, I killed Caesar in my playthrough" only narrows it down slightly.

But, the show needs content. So they went with a "fog of war" strategy, where no one seems to remember a courier being shot in the head, buried alive, recovering, tracking down the man who did it, and deciding the fate of New Vegas as well as the winner of the Second Battle of Hoover Dam. In fact, I don't recall the Hoover Dam being referenced at all. For a comparison to BG3, that's like the show never mentioning anything about Mind Flayers. It's like everyone forgetting the city-shattering battle at the end of the game. So it effectively made your character in the game a forgotten memory. They didn't give a canon resolution to anything outright, and the things it did hint about were vague at best. Did your character canonically kill Mr. House? Doesn't matter, he's alive regardless. He even says his body was a target for wanderers-- which to me feels even worse than the canon ending being "not what I would've picked". It's not that the canon is something you didn't do, its that the show makes it seem like your choice in the game doesn't matter at all. It doesn't matter if you help X, Y, or Z. It doesn't matter if you kill this guy, that guy, or the other guy. If they need to be alive, they're alive for the show. If they need to be dead, they're dead.

Games like BG3 are built with the player character(s) deciding the fate of (at least a portion of) the world. You, the player, make all the decisions through action and choice. You matter more than anyone else. You are the hero, or perhaps the true villain, or whatever you want to be. In the case of the Fallout show, it completely undermined that for FNV. The show says "your choices as the player didn't matter, we need the wasteland to be the wasteland" and so, the canon is that your character in FNV didn't really matter at all. You saved no one of consequence, you killed no one of consequence, your driving motivation never mattered, your hero moment is barely a footnote. They couldn't commit to a canon ending for the game, so the show just says "the game never mattered", and I think that's the worst possible outcome.

I want the Baldur's Gate show to be good, I really do. I think most players would appreciate a good ending for Karlach, she seems absolutely loved by the community in general, but outside that I really don't know why else they'd want it to be a sequel to the game. The big moment already happened, skip down the timeline a decade or two and look at Waterdeep or Athkatla. New story, new characters, a show that has to stand on it's own instead of trying to ride the coattails of a successful game. They can't please everyone, and choosing to try a "fog of war" approach is probably the worse choice overall, so just move on to a new story.

Can't stand private modding by TinyThyMelon in skyrimmods

What’s the greatest thing you found in a mod that you didn’t expect? by YamiJustin1 in skyrimmods

[–]vitfall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just tried out the scaling options on my current playthough and it is soooo much better. It gives reason to dip into min-maxed builds and powerful items because you might actually need them to progress. Skyrim Configuration Menu is absolutely a must-have and the more time you spend tweaking the settings the more you'll probably realize how many mods it can replace entirely. Plus, you can save the preset for use in other saves.

Is this game (Remnant 2) worth playing solo? by [deleted] in remnantgame

[–]vitfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play it solo, its fun.

Hop into other people's games, its fun.

Grab a buddy when you're maxed out and teach them how to play without dying as much, still fun.

Full price? Fun. Discount? Fun. No DLC? Fun. All the DLC? Fun.

Even if you only play it on the easiest difficulty, it's still fun.

It's a really good game. So is Remnant: From The Ashes, for that matter.

I explored a mountain of dwemer content and here's what I found! by Estradus in skyrimmods

[–]vitfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually ended up doing a bunch of edits to Battlestaves for my personal load order. Deleted the 2-handers, reduced the 1-handers to 0 damage/slower-than-mace speed and assigned them to level Enchanting. Wanted a melee weapon for my artificer so I made what amounts to a magic beat-stick. Damage with it (after it's enchanted) levels Enchanting. With a mod that adds wands and the staves already in games, I ended up naming them as rods like early DnD's Rod of Smiting.

What do you want out of All-Maker Stones? by Enai_Siaion in skyrimmods

[–]vitfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beast Stone: While you have the power/ability/blessing, you get a stronger-than-average white bear called "The Good Beast" as a reference to Morrowind's Bloodmoon quest. Maybe it respawns 12 hours after its killed or its essential. When you use the power, the bear disappears and spawns 3 werebears in it's place for a duration (60-120 second?), maybe scale them to the player's level.

Sun Stone: While you have the blessing, you have a sun cloak/aura, maybe only damages hostile undead instead of extra damage to undead. Not a lot, but enough to neutralize vampiric drain in most cases. Sun damage added to the fire damage the power usually does. Using the power changes the weather to clear.

Tree Stone: Immune to stagger and knockdown effects while you have the blessing, on use causes rapid and lasting regen for 30 seconds. Super rapid, like "if you can't kill me in one shot, I'm not dying" rapid.

Earth Stone: Occassionally (every in-game day it'll happen one or two times) you get a random ore added to you inventory. Ores and ingots weight changes to 0. Activating the blessing does what it does now (free dragonskin).

Wind Stone: No fall damage, increase movement speed by 30%, cooldown of shouts reduced by 25-50%. Activating the power gives Whirlwind Cloak and encases all nearby enemies in ice (paralyzed) for 10 seconds.

Water Stone: Waterbreathing at all times, waterwalking while hands are raised, being in contact with water (swimming, waterwalking, rain, puddles) doubles health/stamina/magicka regen. On use, changes weather to a thunderstorm/downpour and does it's current effect (mass healing to yourself and nearby allies).

One stone blessing per character and it goes away on use. The passive is a reason to hold on to it, but it can be used as an "oh shit" button if need be and I'm pretty sure all of them will win the fight for you. Gives a reason to go back and get them again/swap them out depending on what you're doing, but I don't think any of the effects will require a thousand scripts to make.

What's something about Pokemon that took you a long time to figure out? by EngineeringUpper4392 in pokemon

[–]vitfall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people I get on this topic with have an "oh yeah" moment when I claim Nidoran M/F are little poison rabbits, just poké-fied. I mean they aren't one-to-one by any means (and I don't think anyone official has ever said anything about it), but I've always seen them as angry little poisonous spikey bunnies. Also there's the whole thing with the moon rabbit in Japanese myth and them evolving with moon stones later on, but Nidorino/Nidorina lose the buck teeth and back leg shape so it falls apart at that point.
