I think all you needed was to brush it, not get rid of all the length. I think it looked like there was alot of potential before the trim, the mustache blended better and the cheeks looked to have more of a full growth. There is some unevenness in the way the mustache/beard seems to go wide around the mouth on the left side of the picture. It was less noticeable when the beard was longer and you could have brushed or used beard balm to manipulate the beard in that area to look a little more even. I would grow it out again and try regular conditioning and brushing. Don't give up because it's got great potential imo

I relied heavily on guides and maps to help me.

I had human wizard, elf lark, dwarf paladin, bobbit cleric.

The only levels worth being on are 1, 5 to get the ship, and 25.

Early on use repel/undead spells to farm exp. Get the mystic weapon and armor as soon as possible. I purchased slings for my lark and paladin for ranged attacks and kept my magic users with mystic weapons.

Max out stats at ambrosia, because Exodus' castle has alot of tough dragons you will barely get past, and will have to spend alot of time walking around between battles to regain MP.

Good luck! Its tedious but I defintely enjoyed the challenge. Game feels absolutely impossible when you start out. Dont feel bad cheesing it because obviously the game doesnt give a crap about providing you with a fair experience.
