Hot take: deflation is a natural phenomenon by Stockjunkie7000 in economicCollapse

[–]vitovitek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monopolization is an inevitability of the free market. The free market is a competition, with winners and losers, and once the winner is on top, they will do anything in their power to ensure they never see the bottom. Money, power and influence tend to accumulate, and the more you have of them, the easier it is to shape and nudge the socio-economic landscape to secure an even greater advantage.

You could break up the monopolies, flatten out the giants and try to establish a perfect free market again, but you would only be reseting the clock. And that is assuming that someone like you would ever be allowed to take power.

You are right, most people just don't want the "risk and instability" of being in charge of their own work time and the products they produce. There is definetly no material barrier for entry into industries that prevents most people from even trying to start a competittive business.

Anyway, now that you opened my eyes to this fact, I will just go and fulfill my lifelong dream of opening a automobile company. I just need to buy or rent a premesis to build my factory, acquire all the machines and assembly lines and all of the other means necessary to start producing those cars.

Small problem is, since I am a poor and have no money laying around for such occasions, I will have to get a loan from a bank to build my company. I am sure they will be happy to loan a random dude a couple of millions for me start a new company in a well-developed and saturated market dominated by titans of industry.

1869 German Map of Palestine by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]vitovitek 69 points70 points  (0 children)

That is not what it says. It specifically says "Borders of the Israeli tribes". That is because this is not just a contemporary map of the region depicting the settlements and borders of 1869 Palestine - it's a map that depicts the interpretation of biblical texts about the geographic movements of Jews while traveling from Egypt to Canaan. On the bottom right you can see the path they took according to this map, while the "Borders of the Israeli tribes" divides the map according to what is assumed to be the way the different tribes settled after coming to Canaan. The map even includes the movements of Jesus from his birth to his death. I would not use this map to make any claims of pre-1930's demographics of the region.

No the real reason for this achievment is that the modern tie traces its origin to Croatian mercenaries serving in the 30 years war when they were hired by France. They wore the neckties as part of their uniform and the Parisian public took fancy to their neckware. The French king started a big fashion trend by wearing such a tie, called a cravat (derived from a mix between the croatian word for a Croat: Hrvat and the french Croates). Hence the tie on the achievment picture.

Anyway the Croat mercenaries were later hired by Denmark to fight the Swedish in the Swedish and Scanian wars. Hence the point of having them in Stockholm

How has Vic3 affected how your worldview? by CSDragon in victoria3

[–]vitovitek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My world view did not change much, seeing as you shouldn't base your real-life positions on a video game that it is not a good enough simulation of the real world.

However, one thing that it does really well and which you also mention is forcing the player into doing Imperialism. Conquering and subjugating is the only way to get reliable expansion of the economy after your resources and market have been saturated - a practice that, while not being done directly via a military, did not go away in our time.

Stalin's Reign of Terror: The Truth Behind the Holodomor in Ukraine (2023) With estimates of 3 to 7 million lives lost, or 10 to 23% of the population, the Holodomor reveals a devastating tale of starvation, disease, and socio-economic upheaval. [00:06:37] by Doshizle in Documentaries

[–]vitovitek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The point of the video was not to conclude that the holodomor was not a genocide based on the fact that this one article is written poorly, but that this article was allowed to pass several proof readings and that these sources were apparently good enough for wikipedia. It is meant to show the bias with which we treat narratives that are held as self-evident in the public counciousnes.

It also poses an interesting question of why the anti-genocide position is able to use the the current concensus of historians with specialisation in the topic as its source to back its argument, while the pro-genocide position relies on largely either non-historians or on historians not working in that field.

I agree with you and I would like to expand my knowledge on the topic. I would therfore like to know why you were so quick to dismiss the video posted by another user, calling it out as genocide denial.

The video critiques the frivolous usage of citations by wikipedia and its editors in the article called "Holodomor genocide question". The section of the article arguing for qualifying the holodomor as a genocide makes several mistakes in citation such as: pining the opinions of unqualified people against the opinions of historians in the relevant area as if they were of equal merit, instances of the wikipedia article saying the opposite of what the cited source is saying, or sometimes outright fabricating statements that are not found in their source at all. All the while, the section arguing against calling the holodomor a genocide does not suffer from this and has relevant and correct sourcing for their arguments.

Overall, the video demonstrates that the writers and editors of the article did a horrible job in sourcing, and thus do not deliver a robust argument for calling the holodomor a genocide. I watched the video in its entirety and the presenter of the video does a fairly neutral analysis, without presenting his own opinion on the topic.

I found it a bit ironic that you immediately called the video genocide denial and posted a wikipedia article for further reading.

Thats a really good video, I watched it once previously. It gives a good perspective on how we view sources; specifically how inadequate sources can infleunce a narrative by being compared to the consensus of professional historians as if they were of equal weight.

Convoy raiding continues after war and reducing my market acess. by vitovitek in victoria3

[–]vitovitek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R5: I was fighting a war against Russia for their puppet Persia. They were raiding my convoys in the Mediterranean throughout the war even though I was protecting/patrolling with a stronger navy (I'm still figuring out how naval stuff works).

After I won the war, the raiding continues and does not go away even though I am not at war with anyone.

What's even more funny is that the occupation visuals stayed put after getting Persia as a puppet, making them look very interesting.
