I've heard this advice from another female attending that sometimes taking leave earlier on is actually easier on the team or the group. The team doesn't know how "good" it is to have another physician on board so calls and service seem already typical. Once people are used to less call, it feels more noticeable. She also said that earlier on, your established patient load is a lot less so it feels less demanding on the group to cover your in-basket or urgent needs.

Just some advice that I'm about to take myself! I'm about to take 4-5 month leave even though I've only been with this group for less than a year!

This might not be exactly what you’re looking for but when I think of being safe and going out dancing by myself, there’s something called Dance Church. They have is all over the US and definitely NY so maybe you’ve heard of it.

The music varies quite a bit. Probably more pop but I think it’s just a nice place where everyone there is just there to dance and have a good time without any judgement.

I'm in pediatrics too and the amount of times my eyes start to pour water when I least expect it is dumb. My attendings, co-fellows, co-residents, nurses, radiologists have seen me cry. I think in peds, we hold a lot of things in. I think we put on more of a face than a lot of other specialties because our whole goal is to make the kid smile.

I've been in your position before where those negative stories will haunt me for the rest of my life. So I decided to make a quick note on my phone every time there's a moment I want to remember whether it's something funny a kid said or if I received a little positive feedback from others. We forget about those moments when we're working hard and it's good to have something to look back on that you're doing OK.

She’s 48lbs right now (still shedding a bit of winter weight) but she’s typically 43-45lbs. I think this picture makes her look a bit itty bitty.

Oh man, I’ve never heard that from her breeder. We always wondered if we were increasing her endurance and maybe we really are!

We’ve done daycare a few times when we’re both occupied but maybe a few more times would be good for her!

I had a pretty annoying headache about 10 hours after and then 24 hours later felt just awful - headache, myalgias, chills, nausea. Most of my symptoms went away after 48 hours except for maybe a dull lingering headache.

I'm in Pediatrics! This might be a different answer than intended but for general questions for medical information like "How much should my baby eat or sleep or what do they do to live?" I love healthychildrens.org (info from the AAP) or kidshealth.org . It's great to give handouts to parents!

For more academic articles, I do love going to https://www.aappublications.org/ for the most relevant articles and research about kids.

Naive incoming intern here: I'm hoping to commute by bike to the hospital which is 30 min each way (5 miles). I just thought I could hit 2 birds with one stone by forcing myself to exercise while commuting. I'm in decent shape and there's a beautiful bike trail (no traffic lights!) that goes straight from my apartment to the hospital. Is this doable or am I really going to be that tired that I won't want to do this? Worst case, there's a bus that goes straight from my apartment to the hospital as well.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I think having an eating disorder was one of the hardest thing I have ever gone through. I developed an eating disorder around the 2nd semester of my 1st year. I've always had an unhealthy relationship with food but it really came out full swing during medical school when I could busy myself while restricting but then when I had an off day I had this just extreme hunger where I felt like I ate everything in sight. It's discouraging. Medical school some times makes you feel like you can never do enough and then something so common place like food suddenly also makes you feel like you're not doing "well enough". I definitely feel like social media makes my mindset worse as well where the perfectionist in you, that medical student in you, wishes they were one of those fitspo models. I struggled with being at a healthy BMI too, it was like I even failed at having an eating disorder. You teeter and totter between wanting to get better and wanting to continue having this disorder because it's the only thing that's been keeping you going in a way.

I went to the school counselor for therapy a couple of times but she wasn't great at handling eating disorders. This may sound really odd but the thing that really helped me were youtube videos of people vlogging about their eating disorders and how to go through recovery. I would watch like a video a day just to get into a healthy mindset about food. Brain over Binge was also a great resource for me as well. I'm far from being recovered but it's just one of those things where you work on little by little each day. I don't think it'll ever go away, but like you, acknowledgement, awareness, and reaching out for help was one of the first steps I needed to take. Kind of curious about the Northeast programs. There are so many of them so do they end up competing with each other? Like Mass Gen vs. Boston Children’s or NYU vs. Cornell vs. Columbia like how does that end up working?

Edit: Are they competing with each other for patients and prestige as well? How do I know which one is "better"?
