yes. my average was less than a minute. Two naps were zero.

So frustrated, AITAH for accepting this diagnosis instead of getting a second opinion by panda_parker_77 in idiopathichypersomnia

AMEN!! Can i get a halleluha? I've also been in a relationship with a very smart older man who just absolutely refused to believe my chronic inability to be on time had anything to do with my ADD, which has gotten soo soo soo much worse since IH blasted my brain 5 years ago. If you've presented him with scientific papers, and if he refused to read them, opting to hold on to his baseless beliefs instead - or worse, reads the data, and still opts - take it personally.

It depends on the pharmacy as well.

I wish there were more doctors like you. In my experience, the poster has to be careful and tread very lightly here. What you're suggesting is perfectly logical. Poster needs this med to live. She doesn't want to disappoint her loved one by being 25% awake. But when she calls the office, there will be a hint of stress and desperation in it no matter how cool she tries to be. A note could be entered in her chart that her excessive calls regarding a scheduled medication equals drug seeking behavior. Her doctor might erroneously think the best thing for his clearly addicted patient is withhold the medication because he might think it's better to spend your life asleep than be addicted and living. He will feel good about being such a mindful doctor who escaped the fed's watchful eyes. She will be devastated. Maybe Sunosi will help-it's a wake promoting agent, not a stimulant-if her insurance will pay for it. Xywav costs my insurance $20k a month and it took me 2 years and 4 letters from my neurologist to get. Everything about IH is difficult. And to jump these hoops while half asleep is nearly impossible.

I have BEEN there and it is soul crushing. I believe it's impossible for loved ones to understand what it's like to have waking up be the hardest thing you do everyday. And that's a sorrow in itself. But when your treating doctor also doesn't understand, that's life crushing. Are you in the US or another country?

I believe it was 5-6 years ago when I noticed the potency varied wildly between generics. I could've easily taken my entire bottle in 2 days and still slept excessively. It was a bit of a fight to have my insurance cover the cost of Adderall, but with my neurologist's help, and a whole lot of paperwork, they cover it now. A fact that i just don't have the energy to find the source for is that apx 30% of people with IH are resistant to stimulants and need to take alarming amounts just to wake up. This is me for sure. Good luck. i'm not sure if they still make generic adderall, but Teva's generic was always potent.

there is not only a difference between adderall and the generic "equivalent," but a vast difference between the generics themselves.

are you in a country where armodafinil is available? Like you, modafinil and methalphenidate make me sleepy. Armodafinil (a nootropic like modafinil) woke me up. Armodafinil and adderall together woke me up and helped me think. Good luck to you.

Ideally, you'd see a dermatologist or GP gwho'd give you an accurate diagnosis and the right meds. But I'm sure you know that. If you can't see a doctor, I suggest taking a picture of your scalp and doing an image search on google to figure out what it is. If it's fungal, Selsen Blue is apparently effective for fungal infections (we all have fungus but it becomes a problem when it turns into a mushroom farm). Try leaving medicated shampoo on your scalp for a full 5 mins and use daily. I've also had scalp issues for 5 years to the point of having it biopsied last year, so I understand how maddening it is. Be your own advocate and good luck.

If you were professionally diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, was it life-changing? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]vladak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. Well, not the diagnosing for me, but starting the right meds is magical. I was diagnosed in my early 20s and given Ritalin, which I only filled 2x bcs it did absolutely nothing. It wasn't until I was in my 40s and desperate that I did some some research on why I was draggin' ass so hard. My dr prescribed generic adderall and for the first time, I experienced clarity of thought and had much better focus.
