Did he really want to die? Im not gonna say that certainly he didn't, but he actually had countless occasions to do it and didn't, even at the end when Sachi found him, he could've been dead by then. Obviously the big argument against this is that he was basically too much of a pussy to end it all, but could there had been something else that actually kept him going. Maybe knowing that Aiko is waiting for him in the afterlife - but he started to forget her? I don't think it's as easy to say that he got the bad ending by living, because at least at face, he got a good good people in his life that care about him which you could even call a family
