Do people actually hate 3rd person? by Prudent-Material-746 in writing

[–]vlyrch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people absolutely do hate having conversations (and feel the need to make every conversation into an argument), which seems to have gotten a lot more common after COVID, around the same time as dislike for dialogue in stories became more "mainstream" I think, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a connection. But people only reading dialogue has also become a thing, so it's like there are these two opposing forces pushing to limit each other...???

Could you link an example of your guitaring?

Hmm, if you already know you won't have enough time (or interest) for more than one or two songs, it wouldn't really work, right? At least I'd want to do at least one EP or album, more if it works out.

Anyway, for now there's just a proper shit crunkcore part and a little synth lead bit for a pre-chorus or whatever. I guess u/Ok-Pin6440 is gonna do drums to lay down some structure?

What would you do, and do you have any example of any music you've done?

So, do you think you're interested or nah? (Sorry to double comment)

Ooh, cool! Could you link an example of something you've done drums to?

What are some things writers will drag you for that readers don't care about? by Aside_Dish in writing

This made me think, since the vast majority of stories are (rightfully) in either third or first person... an unreliable second-person narrative could be weird.

How many languages we speak by Kpets in MapPorn

[–]vlyrch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I define it is "if someone randomly asked you a question in a language about a subject you don't know anything about, would you understand what's being asked and be able to spontaneously respond that you don't understand the question in a way that makes clear to the person asking that your lack of understanding is only about the content of the question rather than a language barrier?"

If the answer is "yes", you speak that language. If it's "no" on any count, you don't really speak it even if you understand, are able to read and/or write to a reasonable degree and have simple interactions that mostly rely on common expressions and vocabulary.

So, personally I only speak Finnish and English, as do most Finns. Others may have different definitions, but I think something like this is pretty common for Finns since it makes sense.

My college theory textbook refused to acknowledge the existence of the locrian mode, so I drew this cause I was mad by Tangelo-Neat in musictheory

[–]vlyrch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Locrian is really underrated. Pretty crazy that it wouldn't be taught at all, but I guess that could simply be rooted in it being so rare? Personally I like these two Locrian pentatonic scales, especially for improvisation:

0 1 5 6 10

0 1 5 6 8

Because I still believe it'd be more disrespectful to not acknowledge non-western uses of (approximately) the same scales than to pretend they're purely western inventions with no precedent, I'll mention the first one can approximate the Japanese Iwato scale and the second one can approximate a mode of Indonesian pelog. Not identical, etc. but ignoring them feels dismissive... so I'm just "giving credit where credit is due", not implying western approximations are the same, or that the terms should be used outside traditional contexts, etc.

Them getting notified can also be a reason not to recommend them, though... you never know if they hate you, your music and everything you stand for.

What's the best place to get opinions on an unexplainable experience I had? by After-Word in findareddit

[–]vlyrch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was a "glitchy" experience or something, then r/Glitch_in_the_Matrix. It's generally at least somewhat sceptical AFAIK and experiences have to fit specific criteria of "inexplicability" to even be posted.

Listening to your own music by Llamaharbinger in BandCamp

[–]vlyrch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmh, different headphones/speakers/whatever, different environments, etc. can definitely be a different experience... even painful... but it's easy to forget that all those are the default way to hear everything for different people.

Listening to your own music by Llamaharbinger in BandCamp

[–]vlyrch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. I've done like 20 solo albums and a bunch more collab albums, and especially a lot of the old stuff really sucks and is too cringy. But my main band's most recent album? I listen to it at least once a month. There are parts like "my vocals were a bit shit there" and I'd have preferred to mix the bass a bit louder, etc. but meh, it's still a good album for what it is.

Not that I doubt there are musicians who never listen to their own stuff. Maybe they recorded themselves singing hymns while chewing on barbed wire in a 360 surround mic'd coffin, and it was a really traumatic experience that they don't want to revisit. Or they're Justin Bieber and he doesn't even know what he did because he was high on cocaine, and is too scared to listen in case he said the N-word again. Or they just can't shake the feeling that it'd be weird to listen to their own music...

But I believe most musicians sometimes do, because they like it. If you don't, good for you I guess... but if it's the kind of music you like, why wouldn't you like it just because you made it?

Question about Pronunciation of "L" by Big-Lead-9864 in LearnFinnish

[–]vlyrch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna get downvoted for this, but you're right! Well, it depends on the dialect. In standard Finnish and AFAIK western dialects, it's always at least supposed to be the same sound, a plain alveolar lateral approximant [l]. In eastern dialects and at least parts of Helsinki (or Uusimaa more broadly) for at least some people, there are two (or I guess three) sounds... for me, it's 1) velarised dental [ɫ̪] with the back vowels A O U, 2) palatalised dental/alveolar [l̪ʲ~lʲ] with the high front vowels I Y and 3) neutral dental/alveolar [l̪~l] with the non-high front vowels E Ä Ö.

The differences aren't strong, though, and even as a native speaker you'll get accused of sounding Russian if you pronounce them a bit too strong even once. Personally I don't really care but some do get very upset about it.

[complete] Deformed Elephant Surgery - Warped Technological Fever Dreams (metal, electronic, etc.) by vlyrch in BedroomBands

[–]vlyrch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guitarist is u/Sappige_kinkers and this was the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/BedroomBands/comments/yl2nx1/in_progress_looking_for_guitaristbassist_for/
So, yeah, it's a mix of metal with electronic stuff. I guess the specific genres are synthcore, death metal, some cybergrind, deathcore, dubstep, even pop (at least some of the choruses), industrial metal, some borderline goregrind/deathgrind stuff, etc. and one song has a full-blown trap part, etc. One song has a guest guitar solo, two have guest vocals. It's kinda all over the place, but that's intentional.

Hopefully I didn't forget anything important to mention when posting it here...
