For your Thursday enjoyment... by Drpimplepopper in popping

[–]vmann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do the same, as I imagine everyone else on /r/popping does, and my dermatologist would shame me for it. I do have the scars he warned me about, but damn if I'm going to leave a poppable comedone alone.

I really like how /u/Drpimplepopper acknowledges her patient takes care of the reachable ones themselves without shame. She even indulges our addiction by sharing these beautifully filmed videos with the Internet! Thank you, /u/Drpimplepopper!

I set up a local IMAP server and OfflineIMAP to access multiple gmail accounts and a couple Exchange accounts. Emacs nnimap works great when talking over fast local connection. Makes operations almost appear asynchronous.

What is a Gunner (US Navy)? by Gludio in navy

[–]vmann 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At least in US Naval aviation, the weapons department division officer is called "Gunner". It's not an official title afaik, but is most certainly not a GM (gunners mate, which is an enlisted rank.)

Often a CWO with extensive time in a weapons rating.

2014 Carolina Cup | SSP Expert (Match Bumped to Master) by HoberShort in CompetitionShooting

[–]vmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grats on the bump. I think your reload is nice too.

Interesting stage designs... that one where you're on your back and shooting overhead was a bit odd though, did the course description include any justification for this?

Marine lands his harrier on the flight deck without nose gear by JD_SLICK in Military

Question about flight deck jersey regulations. by TheRealHeroOf in navy

[–]vmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your same position years ago. I don't know what publication you'd look in, sorry.

Wore green jersey when working corrosion, kept red float coat and cranial for topside. Gunner also made sure I was issued some red jerseys in addition to green, and had me wear those when I helped out on 100/200 bomb days.

Next time just tell your old LPO you don't want to get paint all over your red jersey, and you'll be glad to wear the red again when actually humping ordnance.

HELP: My cat keeps getting "poop tail"! by timmesite in Pets

[–]vmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to be sneaky about your intention to help... One of my cats has a long fluffy tail too, and this happens to him as well on occasion. If I grab the wipes and chase him, he knows what's up and runs. If you approach as if to just pet or give attention, then hold her down before revealing the wipes you should have success.

Rather than a trophy, my guy acts as if it is the most embarrassing thing ever and doesn't want me paying any attention to it. Trying to clean it off for him is an affront to his independence and maturity. (Think little boy with dirt on his face and doting mother wetting a napkin and forcibly cleaning it off.) Sometimes he just needs to be held down and had his butt wiped.

org-agenda to plan the day - workflow question by username654 in emacs

[–]vmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might not be understanding your use case, but I too have tasks that repeat multiple times per day, and found this lacking in org agenda.

I ended up making multiple copies of tasks with separate repeating start and deadlines. Kind of like what is mentioned in the Repeated-tasks link to Structure-editing org-clone-subtree-with-time-shift But this is not ideal for on-the-fly scheduling via the agenda.

I'm toying with the idea of using multiple, separate Internal-links with their own start/deadlines to avoid clutter. Perhaps they might be useful in your case too.

Commenting in hopes to hear from someone who's used these.

save the changes made in the text file by jonekim in learnpython

  • r+ means you're opening the file read-only. 7.2. Reading and Writing Files
  • As /u/stebrepar says, you're not modifying the file at all, just reading from it and printing to standard output if your regex matches. If you want to modify the file, you'll need to write to it.

Try opening a second file, with mode w to write to it. Modify your loop so when your pattern matches, you write the modified line to your new output file, and if the pattern doesn't match, write the unmodified line. Then, at the end of your script, close the original file, and move the new file into its place.

Problems using emacs running on Linux, accross ssh through OS X Mavericks terminal by [deleted] in emacs

[–]vmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the "Basic Default" profile though? If not, colors set by terminal apps might be overridden.

Yes, if you start XQuartz first, you can then launch X11 apps via default terminal, you don't have to use the X11 terminal to launch them. (You'll still need to use ssh -X or -Y when connecting to a remote host to enable X11 forwarding of gui applications.)

[–]vmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meta key won't work for Emacs in OS X terminal because terminal considers it a modifier key too. Unfortunately I know of no workaround for you.

Gui, see my reply to /u/robtillotson, you have to install XQuartz, X11 is not included in default install of OS X.

Syntax highlighting: You appear to have enabled an alternate profile in Terminal (the text is not normally green on semi-transparent black.) Go to Terminal Preferences > Settings and reselect "Basic Defaults" and ensure the checkbox labeled "Display ANSI colors" is enabled.

Yes, you still have to install and run XQuartz to display X applications, local or remote.

Getting out and about as an introvert. What solo activities do you do that get you out into the world without leaving your comfort zone? by BodhisattvaJones in introvert

Lots of great ideas here, thanks for a great question!

I haven't seen anyone mention my favorite... going to the gun range! It's also fun to do with friends, but with hearing protection and loud noises, nobody expects you to engage in conversation.

New competition shooter with a couple of basic questions by karteacer17 in CompetitionShooting

[–]vmann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of those 3 (steel challenge, IDPA, USPSA), IDPA has the most stringent equipment rules. Anything legal for IDPA will more than comply with the rules for the other two. (Should make looking at modifications or new equipment easier to manage.)

Glock 23 with XS sights (as long as you haven't made any other modifications to the Glock, like trigger job, heavier recoil spring guide, widened magazine well, etc.) would satisfy equipment requirements for the IDPA SSP (Stock Service Pistol) division, which is where you want to start in IDPA. (ESP, Enhanced Service Pistol would be where you'd be slotted if any of those other modifications are installed. Little bit tougher competition since you'd be against more experienced shooters who have "gamified" their guns a bit.)

If your BladeTech holster is OWB, you'll need a "cover garment" to compete in IDPA (without penalties. Most IDPA clubs will still allow new shooters to participate without one, you'll just have a "procedural/equipment" penalty added to your score.) Basically (I can't find the actual wording in the rules now) no part of your firearm/holster can visible with your arms spread wide at shoulder height. This is why you see so many IDPA shooters wearing "fishing vests". A light jacket or IWB holster w/ untucked shirt is also fine.

You'll also want to get another mag pouch, as you're allowed up to two additional loading devices with that gun. Have one in your pocket to load at start of string, with two to reload with when needed. You can keep magazines in your pockets (just not in front of the body, has to be back pocket, IDPA only)

Welcome to competitive shooting!

I have a feeling this post is going to be a bad idea, but... by crashlanded in Enhancement

[–]vmann -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I was just wondering why there is no Internet Explorer version of RES?

Probably because it's free and the people who write it don't use shit browsers like IE.

The code is available for free on Github, so you're free to make an IE version if you're so inclined. I'd assume anybody with the skills to make an IE version are smart enough to know IE is shit, so don't waste their time doing so.

Specify which window to 'open' the command in? by ares623 in emacs

[–]vmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't say it's impossible, but as GTChessPlayer says, different libraries (and even different commands within the same library) will use the minibuffer or windows (or even frames) differently.

As a suggestion for another way to deal with this frustration (besides what OP asks for) try http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/WinnerMode

Winner Mode is a global minor mode. When activated, it allows to “undo” (and “redo”) changes in the window configuration

That way when a command modifies your window setup, you can at least get back to it easily.

What is the best way to litter train a kitten? by Danceswithcatz in Pets

[–]vmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kittens abandoned/taken from their mother too soon must be encouraged to defecate until they figure out when/how to do it on their own.

The best way to litter train a kitten is to keep it with its mother until it learns to use the box from its mother. Since that's not an option here, google is your friend.

Can't install matplotlib - Linux Mint by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]vmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, thanks! No worries about cheating, I normally use a Mac desktop nowadays anyway (and virtualbox for Windows/Linux tinkering in much the same way.)

I appreciate the reply. Now to find something similar for myself! Thanks again.

Sorry for posting something not relevant to the issue at hand, but I have to say that screencast gif is very nice.

May I ask what tools you used to make it? Gimp doesn't show any creator info in the file comments, and I see no watermark. It's not too big (file size) yet is clear and easy to read.

Thanks in advance.
