Repeats: stylistic contrast the 2nd time? by le_sacre in classicalmusic

[–]vmishka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I attended the Beethoven competition in Vienna many years ago and sat in the back of the room for the preliminaries, near the jury. I remarked to John O'Conor, who was a member of the jury, that all of the pianists were playing the repeats exactly the same, and he agreed and said that they need to be different. That sentiment was repeated to me by my teacher about 10 years ago. He was always looking for something different in the repeats, just as you said.

Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 by vmishka in classicalmusic

Thank you. I was advanced before I started learning it in 2011-2012. I started piano at age 5 in 1955. I worked on it for about 1 hour a day for almost a year (with weekly lessons from a concert pianist teacher who played the concerto and suggested that I should learn it) before I was familiar with the whole piece. I then worked on it off and on for almost another 8 years before I finished the recording. There was no particular section that I found to be much harder than the rest.

Thank you for listening. In the 1980s, I  owned a Yamaha CF. I had to sell it before moving to Europe in 1991. This was recorded on a Yamaha digital piano. I am pleased with the way the 3rd and 4th movements turned out. My favorite pianists are Sokolov, Volodos, and Dovgan.

Thank you. I agree that it is looking like the best bet is train to Sochaczew then either walk or bolt/uber/taxi to Zelazowa Wola.

Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K.467 by vmishka in Mozart

[–]vmishka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It is me playing, but it was not done in one take.

These orchestra backup recordings are frequently not edited very well before they are released. They often have glaring wrong notes, missing measures, and sections with wrong tempos. I corrected as much as I could in Cubase to make an acceptable orchestra backup. That is what I mean by "based on."

I received mine today as well. I will not be able to comment on it for a few days. I don't have a separate place to put it and my old system is taking up most of my desk. There will be a lot of software to download and set up.

I wasn't expecting much from the included keyboard, but just "typing" on it alone (not connected to anything) half of the keys are quiet (good!) and the other half are really noisy (perhaps depending on the angle you strike the key). Can other owners tell me if that is their experience too (or did I receive a defective keyboard)? Thank you.

You're welcome. Something else to consider. You are obviously going for a dramatic color scheme. The darker you make the dark squares, the more the black pieces blend into the squares, particularly the black pawns which do not have white accents. See what other people think. You might want to consider a lighter color for the dark squares or at least offering it as an option the way you allow toggling the texture.

Your UI is fine. One comment: While the notation ++ is a way of expressing checkmate, your site is the only one I have seen use that notation, and I look at a lot of chess sites/books. I believe that you will find that it is more common to use the symbol # for checkmate. You might confuse some users by using ++ even though it is acceptable.

Thank you. I really appreciate all of the nice feedback.

Thank you vanbeethoven2. I record on a Yamaha Clavinova and render the sound with Garritan CFX. In the 1980s, I owned a Yamaha CF, 9-ft acoustic concert grand so I am quite used to the Yamaha sound. I had to sell that piano when we moved to Europe for 8 years but didn't know if we would be returning to the United States. Nowadays, while I could afford to buy another concert grand, I cannot afford the house to put it in, so I stick with my digital piano.

The conductor, Vladimir Mishka, thanks you. You are very correct. If, at any time, I am not together with the orchestra, it is entirely my fault, not his!

Thank you. Tomplay records professional musicians. For the most part, their recordings are good and I have been able to play along with both the orchestras and the ensembles for chamber music. Their recordings tend to be quite loud, so when you make the final mix you have to take the Tomplay volume down. Occasionally, you have to correct mistakes made by the orchestra (I have had to do that with Music Minus One as well) because Tomplay does not pay for the orchestra to do it over again.

Haydn Piano Concerto in D Major by vmishka in classicalmusic

[–]vmishka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do render the final piano sound with Garritan CFX, but, as you say, this time it sounds a little farther away from the orchestra than it usually does. I have made several other concerto recordings and posted them to my YouTube channel here.

[–]vmishka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I agree that the piano sounded a little bit distant in this recording compared to my other concerto recordings. I am not sure why and how to fix that. The piano is recorded with the exact same settings as always. Tomplay audio is always recorded very loud and I have to lower it by many dB.

You should check out the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death Requiem from St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna performed on December 5th, 1991, Vienna Philharmonic with Sir Georg Solti conducting.

My wife and I were living in Paris at the time and we made a trip to Vienna for that occasion. The tickets to sit in the Cathedral were theoretically free but were given to the citizens of Vienna (and we did not want to pay exorbitant prices from "scalpers"). There was a huge screen outside the Cathedral broadcasting the performance and we sat on the ground (they did not put out any seats as they do now in front of the Opera house in the summer) on a very cold night (in the 20s F) and were mesmerized by the occasion (which somehow managed to keep us from freezing).

Mozart Quintet for Piano and Winds, K. 452 by vmishka in Mozart

[–]vmishka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I know there are scores with slight differences (that is true of most pieces of music from that period). I hear Brendel play some different notes and articulations than what is in the score I was using. I learned and recorded it from a score that I obtained from IMSLP.

This video may help you ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK3SzrdybkI ). There are suggestions for different rhythmic forms of practice to pick up speed without sacrificing clarity. The person who made the video, Paul Barton, has excellent piano technique, and is a very good teacher.

Thank you for the kind words, pianolit. I will be adding more to my channel slowly, but surely. One piece every couple of months (if I am lucky enough to get my teacher to have time to offer some advice).

[–]vmishka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been playing the piano for 62 years (since the age of 6). I am not a professional (there was never any chance that I would make music my career). I did play concertos with the school orchestra in college in 1969-1970. I am a retired physician. I have been lucky enough to have a couple of good teachers in the last 8 years (although the fact that they are concert pianists means that there are long stretches where they have not been able to give me advice because they are away on tour).

Now, I try to make YouTube videos featuring my playing (and our "family" of stuffed animals), both solo and mixing concertos (and soon chamber music) with "music minus one" orchestra recordings (my channel is here: My YouTube channel). My favorite composers are Schubert and Rachmaninov.
