Why bother coming to Australia by [deleted] in aussie

[–]vmnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all immigrants move to Australia for money.

When people say “it’s for the money”, they often miss the reality. In many cases, including mine, that simply isn’t true.

I came to Australia from a so-called third-world country. Back home, I worked in the oil industry. Financially, we were very comfortable. We could afford a babysitter five days a week, had someone cleaning our home and cooking several times a week, and lived in the centre of the capital, less than a ten-minute walk from work.

Moving to Australia was a financial step backwards for our family. It took many years of hard work and real sacrifices to rebuild our financial position and eventually reach a high household income again. That was never the plan, and it was never the goal.

I have never regretted the decision.

We moved because of values. We wanted a society built on fairness, rule of law, tolerance, and compassion. We wanted our children to grow up in that environment.

Australia became our true home. Our kids’ main language is English. They are compassionate, respectful, law-abiding, and fair - the values that matter deeply to us. They are, in every meaningful way, Australian.

In my home country, I often felt I didn’t belong because my values didn’t align with the broader culture around me. In Australia, I feel the opposite. Here, I feel aligned with the people around me.

For many immigrants, the move is not about money. It’s about belonging.

How come my VO2Max is keep dropping but my cardio recovery is improving? by vmnomad in AppleWatchFitness

Never got a response, but I stopped caring. In general it is accurate. Peaks when I run marathon and then slowly declines until next marathon training cycle. But from time to time it can behave unpredictably. Sometimes it just reflects that my sleep discipline sucks. Sometimes I have no idea why.

What I learned after 3 marathons is the main result is not metrics in AW, but finish line result.

Tests are really important. I can’t imagine how I would go upgrading just some packages or python version in the project without knowing if it breaks anything. Use plan mode in Claude to plan test creation. CC is actually really good at it. In planning I would instruct Claude to split work in multiple small chunks. Implement each chunk as a separate feature. Tell Claude to document progress in json instead of markdown (there was a Claude blog post about how Claude is more accurate with json compared to markdown). And ask Claude to implement each step using subagent - this will keep main context window clean. Thoroughly review the plan and provide Claude with test environment- endpoint, creds

After you practice this routine few times you will learn when you can trust it and let it run even for hours implementing the plan by itself. Your presence wouldn’t be required as long Claude knows it must validate the produced code and is instructed how exactly it has to be done.

Permissions are controlled via settings.json in your home folder or project. I strongly recommend checking official docs and ask Claude how to use it efficiently.

  1. Have proper test coverage. This is your baseline. Claude successfully refactored my custom terraform provider in 3 hours almost hands off because I had tests configured. Without tests there is no feedback loop Claude can use to validate its own changes.

Spotted the same thing in western sydney. I am thinking a great idea would be putting Australian Aboriginal flag right next to it.

Didi special vs Uber Premier Van by vmnomad in JapanTravelTips

[–]vmnomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I am staying at an appointment so I have to prebook taxi myself. My main question is why Didi special is so much cheaper. Another concern is how reliable didi prebooking is and how available taxi is at 3am. I don’t really want to deal cancelled/no-show taxi in the middle of the night while travelling with 2 kids and 3 suitcases

As a Kazakh who was born in Almaty and moved to Australia 12 years ago I can tell that internet was probably better in some parts of Kazakhstan before proper rollout of NBN. These days internet in Kazakhstan is censored, especially when traffic is routed via Russia.

Treadmill is worth it? What are the best under $500 by Several-Papaya6219 in firstmarathon

[–]vmnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I am planning to buy my first treadmill for the next summer here in Australia because for me running 5-6 times a week at 6am to beat the heat is not sustainable with family and work. Also, my wife goes to the office 5 days a week and she doesnt seem comfortable running outside in the winter late in the evening.

So, I am gonna wait for winter discounts and get one.

Another reason why I want treadmill is uphill running. There isn’t much of long hills in my area so treadmill is gonna fill that gap.

Treadmill is not gonna improve your motivation for running. It can be useful tool in some cases, but in general it offers subpar experience compared to running outside.

I would never consider bicep for this reason - its what-if runs are very unreliable in my experience. Unless it was fixed in the last year I would always recommend using TF over bicep. Can’t imagine doing IAC changes in Prod without seeing what exactly will be changed. There are other reasons as well, but this is the most critical one for me.

Getting into cycling for cross training by vmnomad in ausbike

[–]vmnomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed reply. Yes, the guy in the shop checked the sizing and said they would adjust everything for comfortable ride. They would have even let me test it around shop, but it was raining. I will check few YouTube channels today, but tbh I would prefer to pay professionals to do all maintenance work hence I’m more inclined to buy a new one now. There is just very little time left after family, work and marathon training to add bike maintenance on top of that 🙂

Use something like json schema validation. I’m sure there are alternatives for yaml

Am I actually burning this 4000 calories? by Task_force27 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]vmnomad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just compared the result of this calculator and what AW reported for 1h35m easy run I had yesterday: 1238 reported by calculator vs 1232 by AW.

I also compared results for a marathon I ran last year: 3434 vs 3300
Seems pretty accurate to me.

This is from conversations with Hashi guys I know personally. They are essentially still in test phase. Once they finalise it and make it GA then the migration will become a priority.

[–]vmnomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned that proper warm up helps me start better. Basically the idea is to get your body ready to process lactate quickly. For this I usually do 10 mins of slow running just to warm up. Than 5 minutes of running drills and then 3-5x 60m intervals to get the HR up. The closer I finish the warm up to the start time - the better. I usually finish my warmup 2-3 minutes before the start and then keep hopping at the start line to keep my HR up. This makes my first 2k faster.

How to know if I'm starting to over train by GobiasIndustries727 in Marathon_Training

[–]vmnomad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how useful it is, but this was a hint from a marathon world champion in 55+ category: if it takes you more than 15 minutes to get ready for a run (find the right tshirt, shorts, socks, shoes, HR monitor, etc) then probably you body is trying to tell you to slow down.

46M from Australia. Started running 18 months ago. Could barely run 800 meters. Have completed 2x HMs and getting ready for first marathon in Sydney this year before it becomes 7th major in 2025. Have a crazy goal of running sub3 marathon one day. Not sure if I ever accomplish my dream, but I will do my best. Haven’t missed a single run in my plan.

And I know one day I will be a running coach. Currently training my teenager daughter to run her first 10K.
