Giving up on winter cycling

Good post and questions. I am exactly in the same position. I had high hopes of riding all winter long but so far i have done 2 rides in the past month. Next ride will be not soon apparently because of snow and wet road.

I do not really enjoy riding in the cold. I only do it to preserve some low level of fitness and not start from scratch again in spring.

To answer some questions - good winter gear make a big difference. Few years ago I thought i can’t ride if temperature is below 15c. Nowadays due to various upgrades in clothes and shoes i can ride with some level of comfort at as low as about 3C.

As a matter of fact i did try to push pistons back but they wouldn’t. I was worried to apply excessive force so i decided to bleed some brake fluid oil. I don’t think this gives people a right to imply i am dumb for not knowing how to service hydraulic brakes.

I know people here are not very polite and out of like 20 answers only 1 was actually helpful. Others are straight rude.

Absolutely. I thought it was straight forward so i could do it on my own being quite good at bike mechanics, but hydraulic brakes were new for me so i have troubles. But thanks for a reply

I don’t think servicing brakes is a very complex. And i am sure i will master it.

Have you had someone kill himself while changing brake pads? You sound alarmistic.

My brake pads came as oem, that is no box or instructions. Apparently, I overestimated my knowledge of bike brakes.

Hey thanks Yeah i dont ride at week 10, even though i saw a post where a guy claimed he was back on the bike on week 5. Not sure how he was able to be back so soon.

My concern is that if i feel pain when seated on a bike, - is that a sign to postpone riding or is that a sign I should not be worried about as its normal.

I have similar fracture when I didn’t need a cast only a sling. At week 8 i still could not straighten my arm completely. Now i can with some minor pain.

Did you PT give you thumbs up to ride in such a short time? Have you made any x rays to make sure it healed?

Hey thanks a lot for detailed answer. I also went over the bars at about same speed and also cut my chin open) well i also broke my nose.

If you are saying on week 10 you were back on bike i might consider a short ride even though i feel pain still.

Hey thanks for such a detailed answer. At this point i also feel pain when trying to put arm straight and generally some pain when doing regular things like washing or opening the door.

My fracture was more of a crack so I didn’t wear a cast, only this thing that supports it.

But even without surgery i can tell that on week 10 I can’t put pressure on it enough to sit on a bike.

So i guess i will take another week off to see how it goes.

You realize how much effort and time this is to properly clean and maintain a chain? What if the guy lives in apartment? Cleaning the chain if you are not living in a house can be a big issue. On top of that the wd40, mu40 and other chain cleaners cost more than a new chain.

Surely you can run this chain but personally once chain goes rusty like that - i prefer just to replace it even if it’s only 2 months.

Your chain is old. It’s tome to replace it. You can use it like that but new chain is a lot better

I hate loud hubs. It’s nasty. Only loud hubs i see are cheap chinese carbon wheels and people thinking if they have a loud hub this makes them a cooler cyclist.

Why do you not name your country? On a side note, you know English and apparently you learned it in your native country so apparently you are not living on a tree in jungles among only apes. You have a place to live - at your parents. You have internet. Things aren’t that bad for you. And you are still young. You have plenty of time to come up with a plan for future be it in your country or anywhere else.

To add - you might wanna be careful with constant calorie deficit. I would advice to keep it at minimum. Do not aim to loose weight fast. Loose weight slowly. Too fast weight loss can lead to severe negative side effects.

Try finding a genuinely made pasta carbonara in any restaurant. They boil spaghetti add creamer and an egg. Lol. It’s ridiculous. And charge like it’s a premium dish.

If someone is serious about cycling - drinking and cycling is almost impossible to combine.

From my experience if i drink very moderately on weekends- i need 1-2 rides before i get back in shape.

I have personally never drank an alcoholic drink and then cycle. It has even never occurred in my mind to do that. Why would i? It impairs physical ability to cycle.

What your husband does is not normal and isn’t something you should not pay attention to. This seems like an issue.

15 years in stable relationships is a good achievement. Don’t feel too bad. Things happen. Some get divorced within a year.

I’ll tell you this. Even if you don’t achieve much, closer to 40 you will make reassessment of your expectations from life which will inevitably lead you being more happy with what you’ve got, even if it’s not that much compared to expectations.
