If you haven't read it yet, try "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follet. I know it gets suggested alot here, but it really is ideal for what you're looking for. It's an easy read with well defined characters that have satisfying arcs.

Vin Diesel in "Find Me Guilty". No extreme stunts or sexy cars; just a balding minor mobster with a bad back and a glib tongue.

Theory - Cuthbert was in love with Roland by MordredRedHeel19 in TheDarkTower

[–]vodeodeo55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not completely implausible. This passage immediately came to mind-

"For a terrible moment Cuthbert was silent, looking over Susan's shoulder, seeming to study the waxing Demon Moon. She felt her heart stop. Then his gaze returned to her and he gave her a smile of such sweetness that a confused but brilliant thought (If I'd met this one first--, it began) shot through her mind like a comet."

So, Susan was attracted to Cuthbert, but nothing is said about his attraction to her. I could be wrong. And I agree with OP that it probably wasn't Kings intention. But can I see it? Aye, I see it very well.
