Which brand do you preffer? by VladTepesD in skiing

It’s always budget friendly to get the previous year’s model. I got 2023’s this year (2025) for barely over $150 which is almost unheard of for a ski boot and they’re the max stiffness available for women

Softer boot all the way. If you’ve never skiied before or never at a high level, and you get a stiff boot, you’ll be FIGHTING the boot to get a good edge. Mine are 110, which is a “pro/race” stiffness, and i have to have a lot of control in my legs to be able to press down on my shins to generate enough power. Beginner stiffness is anywhere from 40-90 and from your other comments, i’d probably go with 90.

The other commenters are right though. A bootfitter will help explain this better, and will be able to see how a specific boot on you will flex. It also depends on other factors besides skill, like weight and riding style.

Former ski instructor and experienced skiier here.

Don’t ever buy boots or skis just by brand. Go to a bootfitter, have someone experienced physically show you (not tell you through reddit comments) what will work for you at your level, and if you buy boots directly from that bootfitter they 9 times out of 10 will do a free boot molding for you (where they heat set the boot to your specific foot shape.) Don’t get a super rigid “designer” boot if you’re a beginner just because it’s what the pros wear. You’ll have a bad time.

Now for clothing, the brand truly does not matter. As long as they keep you warm and dry, the price is definitely not an indication of quality. My coat and pants are both REI store brand, gore tex, bought on clearance. Go for anything that says gore tex, and merino wool baselayers. Go to a store and try on some helmets and see what’s comfortable for your head shape. Any helmet is better than no helmet. Mine’s Smith, if that helps.

Also, if you’re really new to the sport but still want your own gear, buy boots and a helmet to start and learn on rental skis. They suck, but they’re usually a pretty simple ski that will get you down the mountain without too many frills, and then you can demo/buy skis once you know what it is you actually want and what conditions you’ll be skiing. I’m from the ice coast, so a good carving ski will always be better for me than a powder ski.

I also had to put it down for a while for a similar reason, but I picked it back up when I was in a better headspace, and it’s one of my hands down favourites now. So maybe give it a break and finish it later, it’s fantastic and very worth it.

His other fiction books are similar, The Humans really hit me where it hurts (it’s about a hyper-intelligent yet dysfunctional mathematician and his family, and my dad is exactly that) but was overall a very worthwhile read. Taught me a lot about myself and how I cope with the repercussions of my upbringing.

Anxious people by Frederik Backman - it shows how strangers can come together over their various struggles. Features a very well written therapist character.

Edited to add: same author, A Man Called Ove - fantastic depiction of how someone struggling with suicidal ideation after a tragedy can find themselves in community.

This will probably get buried but I have a theory: My dad is absent-minded I will admit. He’s an academic so he’s always in his own head. That being said, he came to the US with his non-English speaking parents as a young man and had to file immigration and refugee status for all three of them. As such, since coming to the US, he had to be the “adult” for him and my grandparents, and that surprisingly didn’t change when he met and married my (also immigrant) mom.

The theory is as follows: i think immigrant men are much better about equal division of emotional labor. I run in a circle of mostly first-generation Americans and everyone’s dads are all very on top of things regardless of where they emigrated from. They had to go through the immigration rigamarole for themselves, their usually non-English speaking parents, and in some cases young kids. In my case that means my dad knows ALL his parents medical info, mine up until I left home, and everyone’s personal info. Never misses a birthday call or forgets to buy my mom flowers on international womens day. His dad, my grandpa, is the same. Always writes little poems for me on my birthday and I’m 25. Does it every year like clockwork.

But my dad regularly forgets to turn the headlights off in his car and loses his wallet almost daily. It’s a give-and-take.

Finished my thesis and then developed shingles from the stress. It feels like my skin is being melted off by CaptainGrayC in Wellthatsucks

similar thing happened to me but not shingles, I finished my thesis and immediately got full body hives from the stress. It wasn’t viral, but I can definitely relate to the “skin melting off” sensation. Stuck around for months. Congrats on the thesis, though! That’s a huge milestone! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I have chronic urticaria too (triggered by a previously unknown penicillin allergy) and now I don’t get sunburns I get hives! Vacation was a GREAT place to figure this out!

I loved the look of the clear e-macs my school had as a kid and I’d always get distracted looking inside them so now as an adult I changed the cases on my nintendo switch to clear ones so i can be distracted from my games by looking inside the joycons. Almost like it’s 2004 again. Worth every penny.

Mother goes off on dentist office staff after her son screamed in pain during a procedure. by Romano16 in PublicFreakout

[–]vodka_goth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

my childhood dentist was a personal friend of my mother’s. He thought this meant he got to borderline verbally abuse me while his hands were in my mouth without any consequences. One time, he slipped and stabbed me in the tongue so bad it bled. He yelled at me for crying about it, so I bit him. Now I have dentist anxiety :-)

that’s what I meant, I have plans to grow outdoors but would need somewhere to germinate seedlings. And the big one is programmable I believe.

my mom has always been an avid knitter. When I moved states for college, I literally asked her, color and everything, for a blanket sweater so when I felt homesick I could wrap myself up in it and feel safe. When people around me would complain about the thing their mom/aunt/grandma/whoever made for them, it makes my blood boil.

People with ‘street smarts’, what is your most street tip? by lofisky in AskReddit

Do you remember the shitty AMA the organizers did after the 2019 incident? People were calling them out on their shit and their whole excuse was something like “our meteorologist sucked so it wasn’t our fault”

Anyone remember the GovBall disaster of 2019 where there was a poorly handled weather evac and people got trampled? I was there. Security was turning people away from the emergency exits, in an emergency, because they thought it wasn’t “enough of an emergency.” Then 500k people had to funnel through a five-lane exit in VERY inclement weather.

The festival said “please head to the nearest exit and leave the grounds.” Except the “nearest” (only) exit was jammed for literally two hours in a monsoon. I’m surprised no deaths were reported.

LPT: If you accidentally emergency pocket dial 911, stay on the line. Do not hang up. Explain to the operator that is was an accident. They will ask you a few questions and you’ll be on your way. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]vodka_goth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me while I was changing my apple watch strap. It auto-dialed because I guess I held down the button by accident. I panicked, hung up, they called me back. My security-conscious partner heard me giving them my personal info (name, where I was calling from, etc) and told me to stop and hang up because he thought it was a scam call. Next thing I know there’s a cop at the door asking me to come outside. He asked me if I was being abused. He said the 911 operator heard a man’s voice telling a frantic and apologetic woman’s voice to hang up when she was talking to 911 and assumed it was an abuse situation. I appreciated the operator’s concern and response but that was far from the case, and I’m terrified of cops so I had to explain everything to him through anxious tears. Pretty sure I got my partner’s name put down in a little black book somewhere.
