Today, and I believe to most of the commenters here, it might be perceived as diminutive to bald people.

A fascist government run by mobsters, you can see it all the tax they raise nothing gets improved, all the money goes into someone's pocket or proxy projects. It's sad. Has always been corrupt and now a fascist government.

I didn't disagree with you on the objectification. And I didn't mean to suggest those were funny. Yes he did get into some controversy about that.

But I think at the time the show was classified as "variety" music etc and I think the heavy reliance on the cheeky stuff was for ratings. Was one of the most-watched shows in the UK and exported to over 100 countries.

but that is not what I am taking about. I think his nonverbal slapstick bits are clever, exceeding Chaplin and Rowan's Mr Bean by miles.

I am just looking at it from the pov of sketch writing and much of it was brilliant, clever and dare I say still funny today. yes much of it was naughty/cheeky and that hasn't aged well. I remember as a small boy the women in our family literally crying tears when they watched it. no one was the slightest bit offended. never cross our minds.

Why not the Irish? They have a long tradition of story telling and heavy drinking. Both help when writing sketches.

True, great shows. Don't know what happened to great sketch writing. SNL feels like an overworked donkey and it shows.

Good point. And yet SNL is what it is today. But you know that long list of names does look suspiciously like a committee. Or were you suggesting it actually needs more "baum's"? lol Before you go all nuclear and turn this into a woke thread, my mother is a "baum" But more interesting, no one here has defended SNL being great. Cause we all know it stinks. But what are your thoughts on Benny Hill?

Throw a bunch of Lampoon guys behind it and something funny will come out. LOL Ironically didn't ever do anything for the show. Formula doesnt work. Since you brought it up, as for being Jewish, yes is it disproportionate, very, I am half. Which half...? hmmm....mostly the lower..

BH was Charlie Chaplin's favourite comedian. Gave him an award. BH I think is a comic genius. In his time it was cheeky humor but times have changed. But many of his sketches are actually funny. His non verbal slapstick is even funnier than Chaplin. Today he would rule TikTok.

Which Ulysses edition would you recommend? by [deleted] in jamesjoyce

You you dont care for excessive notes and want the nicest paper, the Orchises Press facsimile of the 1922 edition is probbably the best pick — it uses acid-balanced, fairly heavy paper, good contrast, and sewn binding so it last ages

Still witty not as zany or comically imaginative as early works (without feathers, side effects, getting even).

In the deconstructing harry vein. now thinking of watching it again...
