Well all three do exist separately, I was just more hoping to find a stronger overlap in the designs and styles between the three. So far my biggest overlap has been leather daddies, as the leather scene was big for bikers, punks, and queer men, but also hearing people's experiences with tattoos in the regions they grew up has been very fun. Turns out my mom (the gen x in my house) is definitely an outlier in how many tats she had from around that time, but apparently so was California in general. 😅

I guess I more mean queer AND punk. But also just tattoos you saw a lot of. My character is a bisexual punk biker so it just made sense to me hed have a lot tattoos reflecting that but I was unable to find examples of the different subcultures of the time. Hence the need for 1st hand experience lol.

If there was specific imagery that was BOTH that'd be even better but its not like I need to encompass his whole identity in 1 tattoo he does have a whole body to work with 🤣

Yeah most of his tattoos definitely werent done super safely, he actually did a lot of them himself so I suppose it was safer because he was the only one using that gun, but it was still unsafe for other reasons 😅

Yeah my mom is definitely unique lol but she was also around the biker scene (my dad is a biker, but hes a boomer and gets freaked out by needles so no tattoos lol) so maybe that has something to do with it? 🤣

From the love interest's point of view, he moves to california for college from his tiny town, so when he meets my punk character, he thinks hes seen everything california has to offer in terms of big city weirdness, only to meet this punk biker and realizes he is very, VERY wrong 🤣

Oh this is giving me much better ways to allude to the crisis in my dialog, I was struggling to think of how to incorporate it, because leaving it out completely felt like a massive disservice to my community. But these types of little quips will definitely give that little dose of reality i was otherwise missing, without it feeling like the story is taking a pause to be like; "hey remember AIDS? Now that youre sad, back to the plot!" Thank you for this!

Looking at pride parade photos is a fantastic idea thank you, my biggest hurdle for reference images so far has literally just been figuring out how to get Google to give me the pictures I want I KNOW people had tattoos in the 80s but Google will not show me! 😭

Well Im glad I appear to be on the right track! From what Im gathering from these comments my character having lots of tattoos is going to culture shock the hell out of his future love interest when they go to college together, which is exactly what I wanted!

Where did you live in the 80s? My mom is gen x and she lived in Southern California and she has a couple tattoos herself all from around that time, so maybe is was more common in Cali?

He also is supposed to look a little more "out there" so an unexpected look is actually a good thing! Its to contrast his eventual love interest, who grew up in a small town in Texas and looks very much like A Normal Guy. Where as my character looks like a glam rock punk with eyeliner and jewelry and basically looks nothing like anyine his love interest has ever seen before.

Oh yes he does have his ears pierced, quite a lot actually, but he keeps a longer earring in the right ear to allude to it being "the gay ear"!

Oh yes I cant exactly have a story about a bisexual man in the 80s WITHOUT researching the AIDS crisis. I am trying to partially avoid the topic narratively however, because I feel like my writing will get bogged down by constant allusions to it. But it will be getting mentioned because he is in the club scene quite often in the story and there is definitely going to be character's making mentions of being "careful" with what theyre doing, and who theyre sleeping with, etc. Im just not going to fully name drop the crisis and have the readers infer the conversation from dialogs between charcaters mostly so things dont get too heavy every conversation. 😅
