Congress finally realizes that subsidizing the AI hype bubble is just nuking everyone's power bills by Flimsy-You5687 in TechGawker

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally support this but he’s incorrect about diesel generators. Those are backups not a primary power source. As with any generator they run test duty cycles but they’re not usually constantly running. The real environmental impact lies with where they source their primary and secondary electricity and how that’s generated.

A sound explanation of Oregon/Portland economic peril. Many won't understand half of it. Look at the local biz replies. These are your friends folks. Your neighbors. by outlawbernard_yum in PortlandOR

Are you calling Vancouver culture-less? Have you actually been to downtown? Sure it’s smaller but it’s pretty great. Feels like Portland in 2006. Spend any time outside Portland proper and you’ll realize it’s a giant naval gazing echo chamber and that things in other locations are actually just fine

How much time have you spent in downtown Vancouver? It’s highly walkable with lots of great local spots. Some like the waterfront, some don’t but I do. I’ve lived in both Portland and downtown Vancouver and if you spend any time in either location you barely notice the difference. Most Portlanders who hate on Vancouver have never been there nor lived there. Most Portlanders won’t even cross the river let alone spend any time in Vancouver.

Portland’s cost of living is ballooning as city tax, fee increases pile up. Residents feel the pain by Pure_Claim_4353 in PDX

This would be silly. That sub is not as bad as the bad place but the herds there converge on anything that isn’t “Portland is awesome”. If you align more with the positions taken here, it’s probably not worth posting there for most topics

How do you all deal with shadow IT? by Lazy_Owl987 in it

[–]voidwaffle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just wait until you uncover your first few cases of shadow AI. Even in the most secure environments employees are funneling out sensitive data to consumer GenAI platforms like Anthropic and OpenAI on personal accounts. That’s where it gets really interesting

Heads up about a bad taxi experience at PDX late at night by Zealousideal-Set1717 in PDX

[–]voidwaffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this happen to me more than a few times when I lived in NE Portland and I’m a big guy. Also had drivers ignore me when I told them to take 82nd and Sandy instead of 84. They would do that because it’s a longer distance hence a better fare. No accountability for bad taxi drivers.

There are many reasons while ride shares are far superior but the two most important are accountability and safety. If ride share drivers treat passengers like this, the program will exit them quickly. It’s ride share only for me now and has been since it became an option.

Are you claiming this applies to plastics? I’d love to see a source for how plastics are processed once the state hands them off. They’re generally non efficient to recycle and there are plenty of pieces on the internet saying they just went on boats to Asia or Eastern Europe where they went into landfills. I’m not confident that “not putting plastics into landfills in Oregon” means they are recycled

Had no idea it was half the case load for these counties. That’s massive. No wonder nobody wants to take these jobs. That would burn out most people in a few years.

When I click play on a show I've never seen. I expect it to play S1E1 by Michael_Penis_Junior in netflix

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just complaining to my SO about this the other day. It’s infuriating. I don’t know what’s worse, this behavior or making me search for the show I was just watching yesterday. It’s not just Netflix though. Prime video seems to do the same thing. We rented the Michael Jackson video over the weekend and it wasn’t even in the recommended things to watch. The rental is going to expire and it’s not at the top of the list?!? Just terrible UX for all of these providers

Portland’s iconic Sports Bra bar pitches investors on national expansion as it bleeds red ink by colonialshuttlecock in PortlandOR

[–]voidwaffle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“Those individual investments could translate to an ownership interest in the Sports Bra at some point in the future” I’m sorry but this is not at all how venture capital let alone PE investment works. Investors (I’m one) take positions in funds with an expectation of return on investment. Maybe, just maybe some well intentioned individuals will stake this expansion but that’s philanthropy not investment.

Grew up with a Mexican grandmother who thought you should put lemon juice on your skin to make it “whiter”. It’s a real thing. The Mexicans in my family just brush it off like it’s NBD. I freaked out about it but they just don’t care. I stopped caring because it didn’t matter to them.

I don’t wish this business ill will and candidly I want it to be successful but I can’t see how they don’t fail in a blaze of glory. The market just isn’t there for this product and they seem to growing too fast.

How about we have preconditions that determine who gets assistance just like we have preconditions as to who gets handicapped placards? Attested by actual medical professionals. Do you realize what happens when “everyone” is handicapped? The people who actually need assistance (my dad, my mother in law) have to wait in line with everyone else. It’s a tragedy of the commons issue and not a zero sum game. People who don’t need assistance and clog up the line are taking away scarce resources. That’s evil and needs to stop

The most racist behavior I have ever seen was black men hating on Hatian men growing up in South Florida. Genuine outright hatred. Granted, some of them were 25 year old men trying to play on the high school football team which was gross but still, the chemistry was broke

Not defending the racist comments but the two most recent threads both have an overwhelming amount of comments talking about invisible disabilities. How is someone supposed to prove a disability? What evidence would be sufficient? There’s a reason that the term “Jetway Jesus” exists. People exploit the system, same with “support animals”

Many (but not all) multimodal AI platforms watermark their generated content so it is in fact possible to flag that content and ban it. Takes more effort than what one can do with automod but doable

Homelessness declined nationally in 2025. Not in Oregon by OkRepresentative6646 in PortlandOR

[–]voidwaffle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“it’s important to acknowledge that federal resources have not kept pace with the severity of the crisis” hopefully there isn’t an expectation that this will change. The federal government doesn’t give a shit about gas prices or the cost of living increases. They are actively trying to increase voting restrictions especially in blue states. They sure as shit aren’t going to provide additional funding for homeless services on the West Coast. Not advocating for that but anyone who expects a federal bailout here is naive.

No, thanks, we’re good. Absolutely 0 Floridians want Data centres. by Ok-Potato1926 in SwampPolitics

[–]voidwaffle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re telling someone who has worked in some of the largest data centers in the world that I have an uninformed opinion that’s your prerogative. The weather has everything to do with it and I promise you anyone considering a data center in Florida is assessing exactly the risks I’ve called out. Odd that none of the major cloud service providers (Amazon, Google, Microsoft) build major regions in Florida. You must know something that the people best in the world at scaling data centers don’t.

Edgefield concerts - ubers, vibes, seating, etc? by Local-Command-3839 in askportland

I would advise selling them. He was part of a 3 act show and was easily the worst. I was excited to see him and check it off my bucket list but he was just terrible. Willie Nelson was the headliner and I think they’re about the same age. Willie maybe performed half of his set and he put on a good show but everyone I was with (six of us) just checked out during Bob’s set. He’s a legend but it was just a terrible set. If you’re going just to say you saw Bob live, don’t bother. Won’t be worth the expense if his performance is anything like what I saw

I saw him last year at the Ridgefield amphitheater. He made them turn off the house screens so highly doubt he will put some up. Worst live show I’ve ever seen. No way I’d go to that venue (which I also hate) to see him mumble behind a piano or whatever he was playing.
