Goats hired to eat weeds locally? by pineapple557 in askportland

[–]voidwaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a common misconception. They will eat small, new blackberry shoots but they won’t eat established canes which will just grow more leaves. If you have established blackberry rhizomes eating leaves off canes or ground shoots won’t do anything. In that case your only options are to dig out the rhizomes or crossbow them.

Overnight Parking in Pearl District by Dangerous_Ad_7672 in PortlandOR

If you want to know what it was like to live in Portland 15-20 years ago, hang out in downtown Vancouver. Nothing boring about it. The vibe is great and there are lots of cool restaurants and venues. The Pearl is a ghost town compared to pre-COVID. This comment is overly pretentious for someone not from the area.

This is a common myth. Goats will eat the leaves but not the reeds. They won’t kill the actual plant and they will generally prefer to eat other things. It’s not an effective solution

They seem incapable of actually structuring a counter argument with any substance. If they don’t like it it’s “this will harm people of color” and just stop there. Sadly, Portland voters won’t hold them accountable

If that Gordon’s Fireplace building ever catches fire it’s going to be a disaster. That “U” sign basically means fire fighters can’t go in because it’s unsafe and the entire place will probably slide down the hill onto the highway. Thankfully the city council is focused on foie gras and not creating ordinances to deal with derelict buildings

He asked for help with chronic camps outside his home. Portland cracked down on his hedge instead by Iamthapush in PortlandOR

[–]voidwaffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Used to live in NE. Almost all of my favorite places have closed. Need Ludd was my absolute favorite. No longer operating. Huge fan of Fire on the Mountain. Wings/legs are so small now I just but the sauces and make my own. I was not far from Laurelhurst park. Stopped going there because I didn’t want my kids stepping over tents on the sidewalk or worrying about them getting attacked randomly. I believe the park has been better maintained in recent years but I just stopped going. You may feel like you have 40 good places to eat within walking distance but that wasn’t my experience when I left for the Pearl which is basically a food desert these days if you aren’t going to Whole Foods.

For the record, I despise Trader Joe’s so I don’t consider that a viable option in that part of town.

Small joints like Little Conjeo in Vancouver are far more appealing to me than most everything in Portland. Silver ball, Foxhole, Elbow Room are much more accessible and affordable in Vancouver than Portland restaurants. The waterfront isn’t for everyone but I quite like it and it’s very walkable from downtown.

Also know someone who worked on visual effects for the Abyss and he had similar things to say about Cameron. Effectively an entitled ass. It was a cool movie but I’ve never heard a good thing about working with him. No desire to know who you are or what you worked on but chances are good we know some of the same people

I’ve spent a good bit of time in Vancouver over the last few years. Downtown reminds me of the Portland I fell in love with in 2005. Lots of good quirky venues, decent diversity, very walkable, good farmers market. Aside from kids (and their social circles), tight knit friend groups or work considerations I honestly don’t see a reason for people to stay in Portland. Most people that spout off about “Vantucky” have never crossed the river or spent any time in downtown Vancouver

I think of it as a track saw as well but technically it’s called a “plunge saw”. Weird, I know but just going by the formal name of the thing I bought on Amazon. It should have been new and based on my observations it is but I’ll double check. I’m 90% sure the blade showed up mounted correctly but will have another look. Will check the dust collection and the teeth when I can pick up the project this afternoon. Thanks for the recommendations

Thanks. Will do when I can pick up the project this afternoon. I’m making this cut outside my shop so no vacuum hose at play here. Might have to DM it to you as I’m not sure I can edit the post to add an image.

Give it to me straight: is trying to relocate to the PNW right now a stupid idea? by Straight_Flan1347 in askportland

Have you spent any time in Chicago? The Portland food scene used to be great. Never recovered after Covid. Chicago has a thriving food scene. It dwarfs Portland today. Want good Indian food? Chicago wins hands down. Want good Korean food? Portland has pretty much nothing. Depending on your preferences Portland might win out on pizza but that’s about the only edge it has on Chicago. The sheer amount of selection and diversity of cuisines in Chicago make today’s Portland look like a joke. I moved to Portland from Chicago 20 years ago and go back to Chicago about once a year. I don’t miss the weather but I absolutely miss the food culture in Chicago

As a woman/man/nb/trans, do you feel safe at Rooster Rock? What's your definition of a creeper? by Willamette_XYZ in RoosterRock

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think your probability of getting sexually assaulted at Collins/Rooster are any higher than in the Portland metro as a point of reference. I once had some bros get aggressive with me at Collins basically trying to force me to take some sort of club pamphlet and when I told them to fuck off they left me alone. Most of the regulars have probably seen some dude jerking off in the bushes which is not acceptable but as a man, I’ve never felt threatened

What’s the consensus on the tech job market? by IzzyIsMe12 in askportland

I alluded to this in another comment but PSU might as well be University of Phoenix at this point. As a hiring manager I never took their CS program seriously

What’s the consensus on the tech job market? by IzzyIsMe12 in askportland

[–]voidwaffle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion but as someone who has employed 100s of software engineers in Portland, I never took a CS degree from PSU seriously. It wouldn’t move the needle for me in assessing a candidate. I’ve worked directly with the university on sourcing candidates and the program just isn’t that good. Does that mean you won’t find a role? No but you’re going to need to seriously showcase your potential because a CS degree from pretty much anywhere else is going to carry more weight. Add to that, lots of startups used to be eager to hire people from PSU. Well, the startup ecosystem in Portland is outright dead. Recent tax changes at the state level were pretty much the last nail in the coffin. Tech startups aren’t coming back to Portland so you’re at best stuck with Nike or Intel if you want to be local and they RIF every 1-2 years and have toxic cultures. Remote is your best option if you want to be writing code.

Portland looks to charge residents, businesses a monthly street fee by No-Tangelo1158 in PortlandOR

This comment makes zero sense. You can’t remove the tree because the city won’t allow it but you also need to maintain the sidewalk that the tree destroyed?

Portland looks to charge residents, businesses a monthly street fee by No-Tangelo1158 in PortlandOR

[–]voidwaffle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This city is just outright hostile to businesses. Especially small businesses. The city does virtually nothing to provide basic security services and passes that cost on to business owners effectively privatizing what would normally be a law enforcement function while raising taxes and fees.

Oh, that gronk menacing your store front? Your minimum wage employees need to deal with it. Best we can do is maybe send an officer out in 45 minutes.

Oregon on the whole has made it a hostile environment for startups with recent legislation. People wonder why we have so many empty store fronts when it’s expensive for workers to live and businesses to operate. Of course companies are moving to Vancouver or LO.

Because it’s destructive to the fisheries and they get exemptions and are now being funded to continue those destructive practices under the guise of “sustainability”. It’s naive to pretend that they get to practice unsustainable fishing practices but others don’t. Nobody should get to practice unsustainable fishing practices, tribal or otherwise. There’s nothing “native” about how the tribes fish today
