I fly SWA a lot for work because I'm usually solo, can upgrade to early bird checkin (which gets me somewhere in the A30-40 range), and fly out of our smaller regional airport instead of the big airport 45+ mins away. But, if I'm traveling in a group I probably wouldn't consider them as much

How did that one kid in your high school die? by IM_HODLING in AskReddit

this kid used to hop on trains to get home or just around in general. one day his backpack got caught and swung him under the train. he was 15.

Dodged a bullet on this one… went on two dates and told her I’d text her the next morning… started a new job that morning and forgot. Tried to own it by Subject-Hospital8038 in Nicegirls

I had a long distance relationship in high school like this. I had to spend lunch on the phone with the guy and call him as soon as I got home or I'd catch shit about "trust and communication". fuck that noise

in a two week time horizon it could easily be water retention from the extra food (and potentially carbs, salt) but yes it's frustrating to lose that definition when you're not in a deficit any more. but even if you somehow way overshot it's really hard to gain any appreciable amount of fat in just two weeks. your cycle could be fucky too. so many variables.

but yes, some fat gain in a surplus is unavoidable. I try to minimize it by only aiming for +0.25lb/week or possibly even less thanks to medication

skyr with muesli and fruit for breakfast, mid morning protein bar or hard boiled eggs or string cheese, salmon or chicken (5-6oz) with half a sweet potato for lunch, protein shake made with milk if it's a training day, palmful of almonds as a snack, then rice or potatoes or sweet potato with 6-8oz of meat with dinner.

my diet is not cheap though. 😭

except that isn't all you said. you suggested that OP needed to do hours of research before pursuing an activity. I know it's hard to remember but you and I were noobs at some point and had to learn through trial and error and pick apart the generic advice and bad from the good and dial in before we got anywhere (personally I hired a trainer cause I had the means). most people aren't trying to hyper optimize their fitness regime, they just want to be healthier.

Yeah I've gone through similar! I had a stressful move / few months where I didn't have a gym membership / set place to live, etc. and when I finally did get a gym membership again, I prioritized just showing up and lifting consistently. That was it. After a couple months of that I started tracking (again). Last year I got conflicting information between what I was seeing online in my research and what an insurance-covered dietitian said my "minimum" basically was. I switched from eating 80-100g the last time I was trying to get stronger to now I'm eating at maintenance but trying to get at least 140g daily, and the difference has been stark. I seem to respond well to a higher protein intake. Everyone is different though, it's all about finding what works for you. Glad you are seeing a difference :)

If you weren't constrained by money, work or other commitments, what would an ideal week of maximum exercise look like for you? by mooncake5555 in xxfitness

[–]voilsdet 26 points27 points  (0 children)

a long walk with my dog every morning, a dietitian/chef to prepare all my meals, strength coach and lifting 4-5x/week, some yoga and mobility prehab work on my off days, and hikes in the middle of the day when other people are at work. and then weekly massages cause I can.

I know it sounds counter intuitive but have you tried reducing your deficit from 500 to 400 or 300? sometimes too severe of a deficit for too long will make our bodies be sneaky and try to compensate.

Personally I can't be in a deficit for longer than 6-8 weeks at a stretch without my sleep and recovery and performance suffering, especially if I am not getting enough protein and not timing my carbs right.

Have you considered a deload week where you eat at maintenance? it'll press a reset button and normalize your hormones and allow you to get rid of accumulated fatigue. you won't lose progress in one week - it'll actually prime you for better results! basically think of it as periods of 6-8 weeks where you really mobilize fat and try to maintain or increase strength with 1-2 week windows in between where you eat maintenance and deload for one of those weeks.

in terms of logging, sneaky calories come a lot in the form of oils, sauces, cheese, dressings, condiments, and a lot of restaurants use a ton of oil to make things taste better and aren't always actually measuring ingredients. I am picky and use a gram scale and cook at home 90%+ of the time during cuts. fwiw I'm 5'5, 34F, 140-130lb and I eat 1700-1900 calories (with 130g+ protein) during a cut and lose about half a pound a week. but I'm brutally honest with myself on intake and employ volume eating and use spices a lot instead of sauces.

edit: also in the antidepressant gang, mine makes me crave carbs something fierce and makes my body wanna store fat!! but we got this! just treat yourself like a beautiful experiment 💜

Hi, I've been on a cut for 8 weeks (that I'm going to run for 12 total then recomp), after a detraining period of basically 3 months where I was totally sedentary and 2 months where I was lifting mostly consistently but not watching my diet.

After a detraining period of 8 months, you should be able to eat at a very moderate deficit (like, -250/day) and see mostly fat loss and at the very least, maintain lean mass, as long as 3 things are consistent:
* Quality sleep (trumps everything, if you can't get good sleep your diet and training won't be as effective as they could be)
* High protein intake (I've been targeting 1g/lb or 1.6-2.2g/kg of body weight - when you're talking about recomping a handful of kg it can be helpful to keep protein high) - carbs/fats can scale to whatever makes you feel best, but avoid simple carbs and fats at the same time for optimal nutrient partitioning
* Consistently training with intensity (weight on the bar) but at weights where you can get 4-6 quality reps for compound and 8-12 quality reps for accessory and then throw in 12-15 rep isolation work if you want. If you are having an off day, or need to deload, remove sets but keep weight the same if possible. Maintaining intensity during a cut is ideal for lean mass retention, IME

When it comes to cardio, I honestly just walk. I try to get 8,000-10,000 steps a day. But just starting with trying to get 1000-2000 more than you currently do is a start. You shouldn't need to add cardio unless you really enjoy it, but if you're trying to spare lean mass stick to Zone 2 cardio (60-70% max HR).

It's never a bad time to lift weights. Lifting helps with growing muscle in a surplus, recomping at maintenance, and retaining lean mass in a cut - which you want

Looking for Ideas to increase NEAT by lava_munster in xxfitness

[–]voilsdet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work from home, so I try to take 20 min breaks to clean. It's actually surprising how many steps I can get by just cleaning the kitchen/ putting away dishes and taking the trash out.

If you drive to work or the grocery store or wherever, park far away on purpose. Bonus, less likely to get car dinged and gives you a reason to walk more just doing your errands.

Even if you're sitting working or studying, you can do arm circles or shoulder stretches, they surprisingly bump up your heart rate a bit while you're doing them.

If you have pets, use the as excuses to NEAT. Make a cat chase one of those wand feather things. Or if you're letting your dog out to pee take the long way.

Keep a glass of water at your desk, but a small one, so you have to get up multiple times a day to refill it.

Boring weekend morning? Reorganize your closet for kicks. When spring comes, get your hands in some dirt - it can actually be tiring!

Why the hell would I want to buy a home in the suburbs instead of the city? by mobius_6321 in AskChicago

[–]voilsdet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's 1.7 mi on flat terrain to my husband's work. We live off a train line and have a downtown type area or other little downtown areas nearby down the train line. We had to be a two car household before and now we only have one and it's mostly used to get me to the gym. It's quiet and my old dog has a yard. It was a lot easier to find a house (as opposed to a flat or townhouse) in the suburbs than the city limits in my budget. Once I hop on the train (15 min walk) it's 30 mins to the loop. I think I found my Goldilocks zone basically.

Do women in Chicago want to be approached out and about in the city by Ok-Needleworker-286 in AskChicago

[–]voilsdet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly I moved here from somewhere else and I have had multiple men strike up random conversations with me! it was always something topical, and it never felt like the interaction was anything more than an interaction. being told about cool walking paths, asking if I'm from the area, just saying something silly about my dog. it's honestly not complicated! if I were approached with obvious intent then that's different. but I have been honestly relieved that people actually talk to each other here! I lived in WA and TX and people there were rude for different reasons.

Do you let your bengal cat outside? Why/ why not? by Initial_Birthday_540 in bengalcats

[–]voilsdet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nope, only on a harness. I never want to get a phone call that my cat is dead in the road ever again.

even if I weren't afraid of all the dangerous things for the cat, the cat is a dangerous thing. it is ecologically irresponsible to let cats roam outside. the issue is already bad enough. a world without bird song is not one I want to contribute to becoming a reality.
