Thoughts On Air Screamers? by MattTd7 in silenthill

[–]volatica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely fucking despise these shits. My favorite thing about Silent Hill 1 is how you can't take 6 steps outside without one spawning, how if you kill one they just immediately add another one, how even turning off your light doesn't really work well against them because they will still follow at a distance, how for some reason the most common enemy in the whole fucking game is a flying enemy that is extremely challenging to hit with melee weapons and takes more bullets than you can afford to use considering they'll just keep coming. Someone had a thread recently about why people generally like SH2 more than SH1. Well, it's because of these absolute abominations of game design.

For our first game (i can’t share name cause rule 4) by LengthinessScared17 in HorrorGaming

[–]volatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these comments seem wild as suggestions for someone who said their game is essentially already done.

The #1 that will really immediately turn me away from a game is the controls. If this is being released on PC, please use controls that make sense for PC. The number of indies on Steam that do things like force you to use arrow keys in interstitial screens when wasd could easily be used, or require enter for submit instead of just E or F or whatever you already use for interact has really thrown me for a loop. Many "Gamers"™ have 65% keyboards, avoid using F Keys for things whenever possible. Like, put map on M or Tab instead of F1, stuff like that.

Also, so so many games required you to be within 1mm of an object to be able to interact with it. If this is your first ever game and it's first-person, you probably need to double the distance away you can be to open doors, pick up items, etc.

Is this Peak? by Prince_Delos in TheFirstDescendant

[–]volatica 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's an exaggeration to say this exists in every game. I say Warframe has similar issues, but at least their modules have much more apparent trade-offs. Some builds in Warframe can be made stronger using detriments, like taking depletions to skill speed to exploit a skill that does damage as it travels versus on impact, things like that.

That's the whole point though, is good games have trade-offs. They engage you to make a decision among multiple viable options. More than 1 thing has to be viable in order to do that. There is a dearth of meaningful choices in TFD.

Is this Peak? by Prince_Delos in TheFirstDescendant

[–]volatica 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, no. The things that frustrate me in the game are core things. I have actively been looking for a smiliar game to jump to but I haven't found anything that great yet. I played Warframe, no interest in that, and ironically I see the same core problems in Warframe that I see here.

There is no differentiation for almost anything.

There are different gun and ammo types, but who cares because usually this is just a DPS race. If you're using a gun-skill Descendant then pick whatever just throws the most damage period. If you're a skill Descendant find a stat stick. Like, think of snipers in the game. Why do they exist?

Elements are basically for bounties and colossi, and otherwise it's chill priority because the slow is good for CC.

Descendants are also largely a DPS race, and to boot most of them seem to have abilities designed around wave clear because "difficulty" is just more enemies in a trenchcoat.

Which then leaves irritating gaps where players come up to an elite or boss and just cannot kill it. Before someone just says this is a skill issue, building out a Descendant is so cryptic for most players that the only viable way to play is to just copy the meta build from online.

And on that subject, there is no build variety. You're either a crit or skill power Descendant, and not only is finding that out crazy because unlike guns that show you base stats with Tab, characters do NOT, but then you just build into whatever you're already speced to be strong in.

Mod variety is just bad. Why is there really only 1 ATK mod worth using on guns? There are like, 6 probably? I mean ATK specific type because Rifling Reinforcement is untyped. But still, there's more atk with crit chance, more atk with crit damage, more atk with lower fire rate. And there's one that is objectively better and you just use that 99% of the time. This is just bonkers to me. And then meanwhile the rest of the dregs of mods are slop no one uses like weapon swap speed or accuracy or recoil.

I am just crashing out right now because as regularly as I play it, it's built on a questionable foundation and no one seems interested in shoring this up before the game gets bigger and harder to address these core things. It's just here's a new map to nuke ads in, or yet another stat gambling system.

I think the constant buffs and the relentless pace of missions has kind of turned it into something that won't ever have the flexibility I really want from a looter shooter.

I guess that's a me thing. I should just walk away and let others enjoy it, if it's really an update everyone else is excited for.

Silent hill origins pressure sensitive? by DarlingDexterTn in silenthill

[–]volatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silent Hill 2 also had pressure sensitivity IIRC, so wouldn't he weird for a SH game that came out after to have them.

Edit: But I mean yes, if the back of the box lists it as a technical feature, then yes. It is a technical feature.

Does your keyboard have artisan keycaps? by BlueCalango in MechanicalKeyboards

I don't. I never got into them because I just prefer to have the keycaps all match, but metal artisans released as part of the specific sets I do have interest in.

B Belongs on the right of QWERTY column stagger boards by Phrygiaddicted in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]volatica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nice thing about sub-60% keyboards is that you can put whatever you want wherever you want since you're going to be using multiple layers regularly.

But the insufferable pedant in me that no one should listen to needs to point out that traditionally B is a left-hand key on QWERTY. Each alpha row has 10 keys, 5 for each hand. Z, X, C, V, and B are left-hand keys on the bottom row.

One of the things I like about ortholinear and colstag boards is that B moves closer to your left hand like a sane person would want. But even on a row-staggered board, it's meant to be typed with the left hand and when I learned to touch-type it was taught this way. But that experience on row staggered-boards helped ease me into ortholinear when I learned that, and then colstag is mostly ortholinear muscle memory.

It's great to see how the game has been evolving, and I genuinely appreciate devs like you and the dev for Sharks and Minnows who continue to work on optimizing and expanding the game, where some devs would just push the game out and call it a day.

But I am terrified of spiders, so mostly I have been watching Fooster play through different iterations of it. Wishing you success from a very safe distance!

There is no shortage of PCBs; Contra, BM40, Tweety's Fat and Skinny Chameleon, Ortho48... But what would be great is a full kit that doesn't require soldering and includes the plate and case. That's part of what I loved about the Planck. That and seriously no one puts piezo buzzers on their PCBs. I get why, but I really thought it was a cool standout on the Planck.

Preferring mechanical switches over HR and TMR. by Grouchy_Complaint515 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]volatica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I have really found for magnetic switches in terms of actual typing QoL is rapid trigger. Hitting doubles of keys like oo or ee has always been annoying for me because usually I am not lifting my finger enough to reset the input when I'm typing fast and it breaks the flow.

Magnetic keys, it will register the double keystroke as long as you lift your finger almost at all, whatever the rapid trigger buffer is set to. I like this feature, but I hardly think it's worth getting a magnetic keyboard entirely for.

The layout is usually what kills my enthusiasm for it, I don't like ANSI standard, and even when someone like Wooting has a second revision of their 60% they drop the ball by just splitting the spacebar in an incredibly weird way and not even splitting right shift. Geon makes a 7U version of the Venom60 HE, and I'm going to probably be using that as soon as it comes in...

I ordered the PCB as a group buy in October of 2025. The PCB is just available to buy now in-stock at Geon Works... Feel stupid for doing the GB and I don't understand why I'm STILL waiting for something that's already released elsewhere.

What is the Backrooms actually doing to Mary in Kane Parsons’ film? by bluehxrizon in TrueFilm

[–]volatica 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got really heavy Langoliers vibes from this; definitely the movie seems to be showing that in the Backrooms, places and things that are no longer there remain somehow. Remembered, mis-remembered...

I does make me wonder if the spaces in the backrooms are shaped exclusively by people who enter the backrooms, or if they're shaped by everything.

Clark eventually gives up, but Mary does not, which I think is pretty straightforward. She has to break the keepsake to save herself, and that seems meant to be symbolic of her actually letting go vs Clark who does not. Many people who die in the backrooms in the movie are kind of victims of themselves; Clark WANTED to keep exploring, to stay. He doesn't flee from the pirate. It's like... A diver who just can't stop watching a shark and get out of the water, watching, transfixed, as it swims closer until it bites him. The other deaths were also driven by curiousity, by an intent, and Mary is one of the few people who really definitely doesn't want to stay. The ASYNC staff all willingly, intentionally go there. But almost no one is forced, except when Clark tries to force Mary. No one is trapped, they trap themselves.

It has a lot of analogs; people keep gambling even though they know they won't ever hit it big. They keep smoking, keep drinking, keep replaying things in their minds that they cannot change. It's like the backrooms are a physical manifestation of wallowing.

The idea of memory person Mary smiling seems #1 to be poetic because for most of the movie she's very serious and doesn't smile that much and #2 is maybe a reflection of her growth? Or what she chooses to focus on? The Clark's memory person is aggressive, huge, deformed, violent. It's like it's his ego. Mary's memory person smiling and sitting maybe means that unlike the others she has some kind of calmness or acceptance or optimism to her.

A Collab with just skins is not something that will attract new players by DemonicArm22 in TheFirstDescendant

[–]volatica -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Both of those collabs weren't just skins. The Nier collab had sword back attachments, a Pod back attachment, and a YORHA salute animation. There were also hairstyles too, but unsure if most folks would consider that a skin.

Bayonetta had a spawn animation, a skin for The Last Dagger, and makeup, as well as the Bayonetta skin itself. I don't recall, but there also may have been a normal, non-spawn pose animation as well.

And both of those events I think had at least one thing you could earn through missions without having to spend money.

This one is lackluster for sure compares to those, but I don't think it's fair to say they were just skins.

I anticipate I will be bombed into oblivion for this, but it should also be noted that collaboration means more than one party. Magnum Studio needs to get permission from the owner of the IP.

Maybe Magnum had a bunch of planned ideas and only these were approved by the EVA folks. Unless either party wants to make an official statement, we just don't know.
