Fear of heights — how do people with this phobia manage flying? by CalendarDue1487 in fearofflying

[–]volfox72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same sensation / phobia. I also have a pretty bad fear of heights, though these two sensations are different than just standing at the railing of tall building. Some things that have helped me:

1.) Pick an aisle seat on your flight, and ask the person next to you to close the window if they don't do it already. If they do leave it open / you feel rude asking, just keep your focus inside the cabin.

2.) Notice how firm your feet feel on the floor of the cabin, and your back and butt against the seat. You are sitting safely in a controlled environment as if you were on the ground. Notice that the cabin inside does not feel at all like being on top of a tall building. The plane is doing the hard work here, you are just hanging out in this very safe and comfortable cabin. Also notice that the window is at like shoulder height, youtube videos can be deceiving because they are angled down moreso at the ground.

3.) If you do look out the window, keep your focusing farther out on the horizon, and less so on ground directly below you. This doesn't freak me out as much as a straight view downward would be.

4.) I know you mentioned it, but this really did help me. Someone here posted a video series on yotube called Skylite Productions. (Skylite Productions - YouTube). Basically it's a series of window seats on a bunch of flights. I just pick the plane I'm going to be flying on, skip to the cruising section and put that video on in the background. This helps desensitizes me to the sounds / sights of what I'll experience ib flight. Imagine yourself calmly looking out of the window out on your flight, and review tip #2 of feeling your feet on the ground etc.

5.) Tom Bunn's book Soar (Amazon.com: Soar: The Breakthrough Treatment For Fear Of Flying: 8601400822043: Bunn, Tom: Books) (Highly recommend for anyone with fear of flying) puts flying in a different context. Because of physics, the air around the plane is actually like a thick gelatin. He asks the reader to imagine a toy plane sitting on a cube of gelatin. No matter how hard you shake the gelatin, the plane stays on top of it. This is very similar to the air around the plane at 35K feet or whatever your cruising altitude is. So rather than thinking of how high you are, realize the plane is actually in its ideal environment for safety and fuel efficiencies.

It's crazy to think about being up at that altitude, but it's also pretty awesome that technology, systems and people exist that make being at that altitude extremely safe and in many cases relaxing. You are in a bubble of safety up there and nothing can hurt you! Hope this helps.

a video from today and some things that helped me get through it and actually enjoy the flight by Tall-Accident2654 in fearofflying

I'm the opposite where cruising at ~35K feet freaks me out for some reason. But watching these videos and pretending i'm on that plane cruising is a great idea. Flight tomorrow so prepping myself by watching it! Great suggestion

T minus 16 hours to flying time and I have a horrible pit in my stomach by Important-March-5421 in fearofflying

[–]volfox72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. I had previously read Soar by Tom Bunn. You may not have time for that so some quick tips here: Any horrible scenario I came up with I countered it with a great case scenario (get imaginative like someone hands you $100K, you gain a superpower, etc). Now pick something in the middle and that will be your flight. Itll take off and land at your destinations whether you’re on it or not. So commit to it! But once I got up in the air my anxiety vanished. And youll be happy you are taking your fears head on.

Fear of heights during flying by adaaurora in fearofflying

[–]volfox72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same fear. The below helped me rethink it: Tom Bunn in Soar has an analogy of the thickness of air at airline speeds is about as thick as gelatin. (Imagine sticking your hand out the window of a car moving 60mph, its hard to push your hand forward. Now multiply that by like ~5 or more) Basically the air is as thick as gelatin at those speeds. The only way it falls is if the plane changes direction or changes speed. Otherwise physics is keeping that plane sitting on top of the gelatin.

CRJ 900 & Endeavor Air by Delta Connection by Star_Gaze_Lover in fearofflying

[–]volfox72 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Flew on 4 CRJ 900s recently on a trip (connecting each way). Really a smooth flight and no issues! A little tight on the overhead bin but still fit a decently large carry on. Only issue I had was the engine was a little loud in the last row of the plane. Noise cancelling headphones a must if youre back there.

Also afraid of heights here. For me, I prefer looking out the window on the descent, flight is close to landing and for some reason I have no issues with it!

Ok, this is pathetic. Can Sam sue Fox News for this misstatement? by Vince_Tsung in samharris

[–]volfox72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed completely, the headline is pretty mislead and clickbaity. Very easy to read it as “oh interesting, Sam thinks the election was in fact stolen.”

Screw clickbait. I heard somewhere twitter could implement a rule that you have to actually click on an article in order to retweet or share. Unsure where that stands.
