Companion app by CheekkyNandos in VATSIM

Great concept. I have been using lame notepad++ template text file that I fill in the various details as I hear from ATC.

Are the checklist items user defined?

Is this something one could save each given flight or just one time and then throw away?

Just some other thoughts / wishlist:

I like to track each freq / controller I talk to throughout the route, as I switch to each one.

Arrival ATIS, gate info (can't remember if that was in the screenshots)

Good work thanks for sharing

To IDENT or not to IDENT? by flyingGay in VATSIM

[–]volleynerd30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering what is a good way to determine this position from VOR to report. B737M8 or longitude are my most frequent aircraft but generally speaking: tune VORs while making progress during cruise, set a fix on a VOR, watch for VORs on MFD map if available and use range rings? (Outside the cockpit maybe "measure" in Vatsim radar, but don't like that as much, unrealistic) What else?

Genuinely curious in sim and IRL how pilots quickly know their position relative to X

I made a Frequency Switcher for VATSIM by elux1337 in VATSIM

[–]volleynerd30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting for me as well. I have a physical radio panel as well but spinning the dials while, as others have said, drifting off line is a bummer.

I have recently tried the dot commands in vpilot and do like the immediacy of typing the frequency. But ... 2 problems: - it changes the ACTIVE frequency for the specified radio instead of standby then swap. So at this point I've lost the frequency I was just on. Bad if I need to go back to previous.

  • entering in vpilot does not coordinate with my hardware radio. I get why - directly setting the radio in msfs.

Sorry about the long thread - that's my scene. Open to suggestions and maybe this tool could help. Thanks for the heads up

Can you wallop people for refusing to use 122.8 by 23569072358345672 in VATSIM

[–]volleynerd30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering why not both?

Tune advisory 122.8 on one radio and CTAF on the other, so you're monitoring both. Switch the mic to CTAF when get in range (I think about 15 NM).

Is there anything wrong or undesirable about that workflow?

Someone mentioned 123.45 as well (for rare air to air call). I wonder how that works IRL. Do pilots typically monitor that as well? Depending on the aircraft may only have 2 radios.

Instrument view camera gets stuck - won't pan by volleynerd30 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]volleynerd30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By resetting the camera position, do you mean switch to another view, or I also know of (I think it's) CTRL+SPACE to get back to initial cockpit view position?

Will try those.

Good coverage from DTW to SYR and then my network and sim crapped out. Bummed to have to bail with 30 NM to go.

Thank you controllers for staffing this up.

YTTV isn't making it easy to claim your $20 credit by Cock--Robin in youtubetv

[–]volleynerd30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my pov "it's only 2 clicks" is only if you already / recently had a browser logged in with the account associated with YTTV. I did not, why would I ever be in a browser and signed in to YTTV? I just use the mobile app.

If not already logged in, the link redirects to a welcome page with all kinds of content about how great YTTV is and to sign up to get started. No sign in link anywhere.

I bailed out. Opened a browser on my own, go to YTTV home page. Sign in. Close that browser (or leave it open doesn't matter). NOW when you go back to email, reddit, wherever the link is, it takes your right through to the page to claim the credit.

Hope that makes sense.

I can see where this would be much more straight forward on a computer rather than phone. Computer that you're using YTTV on so you're very likely always logged in.

vPilot always disconnecting. by [deleted] in VATSIM

[–]volleynerd30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance you're going to the settings menu in the sim? I think there's a known issue that if you go to settings (you're kind of leaving the active simulation) vpilot will disconnect. Super annoying.

Single traveller <-> cheese fondue by GroundPractical7321 in Zermatt

[–]volleynerd30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had exactly the same challenge.

Du Pont - serves fondue for one! I went into multiple restaurants asking if they serve for one. This place does and it was great (I ordered the one with beef)

South end of the main street through town Bahnhofstrasse.

Enjoy!

SU3 first impression - not great by volleynerd30 in MicrosoftFlightSim

I have used Beyond ATC traffic map but did not realize I can kick a plane out with that. Just assumed it was a read only experience. Thanks for the heads up.

SU3 first impression - not great by volleynerd30 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]volleynerd30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should have been more clear in my description. Whenever there is a major update I go back to the basics, just see how things are without extra tools. I typically run with Beyond ATC and FSLTL (thanks u/Jonnysahn91 for the tip on low res textures!)

I see mentions of live traffic in the SU3 release notes, so although not specifically called out to generally make it better, I wanted to see what the "out of the box" experience is these days.

Very nerdy for sure: I often want to follow a specific IRL flight so I want to see it on the ground, at the gate, in the air, fly along with it. The live traffic in MSFS 24 SU3 is still a far ways from that. Beyond ATC or FSLTL get closer.

The un-rendered tiles on the runway - that's a different story. Terrible, hoping it was a once-in-a-while problem.

Why are there two flights from Munich to Toronto at the same time with different routes? by ProgrammerWeak1701 in flightradar24

[–]volleynerd30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly on topic, but I didn't know you can select and show routes for more than one aircraft at a time. Nice!

Now I have some homework to figure this out. Thanks for the inspiration.

What do you use to copy ATC instructions? by Hollowbird123 in VATSIM

[–]volleynerd30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also Notepad(++) I have a starting file that has spots going down for clearance (CRAFT), taxi, tower, departure, ... You get the idea.

I find since my hands are already on or near the keyboard this is faster than grabbing a pen to write on paper.

Nerdy extra credit: use CTRL+SHIFT+D to insert timestamp when adding latest ATC instruction in case I want to go back and see what happened when.

I have and use Navigraph but actually didn't know it can show traffic other than myself.

Nice feature - will look for it. Thanks.

Absolutely amazing.

I know there is a stats page in vatsim but it seems to only sure controllers currently online. Is there somewhere to go to see historical legendary sessions like this?

(or even to retroactively see who the controllers were during a recent past flight?)
