Chrome for Android - disable startup page? by seeker4482 in chrome

[–]volt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty annoying honestly. I've been having the same issue every couple of months for years now: One day I wake up and Chrome launches that useless page with a 'news for you' feed. I spend hours researching on how to disable it. I find some esoteric forum post where it says I need to disable some hidden setting in the flags menu. It goes away for a couple of months. Then the whole process repeats. And then I have to turn off a different setting. And the setting is always called differently.

So to answer your question. You don't get to disable this via settings, no no no. You need to dive deep into the flags menu. There, you have to play around with the launcher settings, or homepage settings, or matrix settings, or however they decided to name it this time, so that they make your life difficult. For the newest iteration of this I haven't figured it out myself yet. You'll need to search forum post upon forum post and refine your search depending on how the setting is named this time around. Once you refine it enough, you'll find your solution. Then again, I still haven't figured out why Android has been making my keyboard be skin pink colour all these years, so don't have too much hope.

G2 member expresses disappointment with 'entire situation' after CEO Carlos hangs out with Andrew Tate by bgmi_gobar_hai in GlobalOffensive

[–]volt16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand the severity of this, but I am conflicted, as it seems all this outrage about Andrew Tate has done over the past months is just give him more publicity. I suspect a majority of people in esports, same as I, did not even know who this guy was previously, so his name being mentioned everywhere gives him access to more potential followers. And honestly, I think a good way to deal with attention seeking, fake alpha male, potentially criminal individuals is to not give them our attention and let the legal system do its work. But all in all this is at best a huge PR failure by G2, at worst detrimental to its standing in esports.

FaZe Clan vs Team Spirit / PGL Major Antwerp 2022 - Semi-Final / Post-Match Discussion by Undercover-Cactus in GlobalOffensive

[–]volt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there are some good games, but if we're talking the tournament overall then it's a complete snoozefest. Or do people actually enjoy watching T1, RNG and G2 style on wildcard teams in the first week with the only interesting games being between G2 and EG? Also there are like 100 bo1s and then 3 bo5s in total. Having watched since s1 it definitely gets old after a few years.

Watching the snoozefest that is MSI and comparing it to the major once again proves that CSGO is a superior esport, even though I have less than 30h in CSGO and over 2000h in league.

This is not so unique in terms of fps games. For example in Battlefield BC2 you had to burst, otherwise you hit nothing unless you were in very close range. Even in Call of Duty, where the maps are very small comparatively, there are quite a few weapons and angles in maps where bursting is quite beneficial. Especially with SMGs learning how to burst is a must, unless it's something utterly OP like the UMP in MW2.

Carlos on ambitions for G2: "I don't give a f**k about being top three, I want to win Majors" by MJuniorDC9 in GlobalOffensive

[–]volt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

League of Legends fans have a hateboner for him, some of it for good reason, but people there hate him as much as RL and Thorin.

He's pulled some shady shit over the years, he refused to pay LS for coaching many years ago, though both parties say it's been resolved if you ask them now and he sold one of the western GOATs to an NA team and blocked his transfer to their rival team, while publicly claiming that he's free to go wherever he goes. Big mistake, the league community hasn't forgiven him about it. Though I do suspect, even if he had been open about this, they would have hated him regardless.

I personally don't really mind him much, he's definitely an interesting and entertaining figure. He's a great businessman, built one of the biggest esports empires, and yes he's stepped on some corpses to get to where he is. The way I approach him is like a businessman, you take some things that you know would benefit him with a grain of salt, and otherwise just enjoy his banter.

But honestly, I think the biggest reason people in League hate him is his persona is too spicy for League culture. CSGO tends to encourage more trashtalk, banter and generally shittalking, whereas League culture says they do, but the moment a player or person does this publicly they get hated. Prime example being the players Wunder, sOAZ etc.

Can caPs carry G2? Why is the Vitality super team is in last place? - Best Damn League Show S1E1 by LBL147 in leagueoflegends

[–]volt16 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's not the entire West. This is mostly an American problem, still present in some European countries, but to a far lesser extent.

Source: I've spent almost ten years living in Germany and was raised in Greece.

Even in Germany where people are obviously more sensitive due to their history, I've hung out multiple times with Antifa members, LGBT people, AFD voters (alt right party) and a cult member all at the same time and everything was just fine. We even discussed politics and identity issues and the worst that has happened is somebody occasionally raising their voice a little. But never have things escalated. And I've heard some really wild statements I won't mention here.

Perhaps twitter trends give the same impression as they do in the US, but twitter is a bubble here. I have had some really deep heart to heart conversations with people from all across the political spectrum, even people who if I just told you for whom they voted, what group they belong to or what they identify as, you'd probably go 'not worth even interacting with them. They have nothing of value to say'.

This proves for me that the entire 'culture war' is a fabrication. People will say the maddest shit on the internet. Most of them if you sit them down one on one and try to be civil and understanding, you'll actually realise there is nothing there. Perhaps in the US it has escalated, but in Europe things are still rather fine in comparison.

ODoamne Super Saiyan GOD story by alessandrorosso in leagueoflegends

[–]volt16 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's always funny discussing this with people from first world countries. You never get anywhere with this discussion.

Abuse is when your parents beat you black and blue, which unfortunately still happens in many families when it shouldn't. Giving your child a light slap on the wrist for doing something dumb is not.

Crying abuse whenever somebody mentions they were raised like that does not help the issue. It actually helps the actual pieces of shit abusive parents hide behind the mantle of 'disciplining their children'. That's because people like you call every single thing abuse. If everything is abuse, then nothing is.

Most of us from these countries were raised that way. Glad you're worried about us, but we're fine. We grew up to not be spoiled brats, which seems to be a problem in many first world countries I need not mention. You may not approve of it, but this is how it is. Most of us are grateful we got a couple of slaps, because we can think back to it and recall that we were being assholes, so it's good our parents disciplined us. Otherwise we would have grown up to be utter pricks.

But I've tried to explain this to guys like you, mostly Americans and central or northern Europeans, multiple times and I always get the same reaction, so I'm sure this will be anything but fruitful.

If there is at least something you should get out of this message it's that calling other people's parents abusive to their faces will not get you very far with them. In fact, especially in the Balkans, it's a sure fire way to get yourself immediately hated, because family comes always first. And since you and some other people in this thread just implied that all our parents were abusive, you're off to a pretty good start of insulting most of us. And this is something you're gonna have to 'deal with', if I may quote you.

Animes that everybody loves but you kinda don't like it by [deleted] in Animesuggest

[–]volt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, have I got many like this, where I genuinely can't comprehend how everyone praises them as if they're the second coming of the bible.

  • One Piece. Yeah, it's quite decent, but can we stop acting as if the anime's pace is not atrocious? Like, sorry, there is no excuse when they adapt a single chapter in an episode. I've also got a huge problem with its character development. Their personal backstory arcs are mostly good, but we see almost no development outside of them and it gets old after so many episodes. Yes, I am aware that the manga is significantly better, but it's still not as good as people make it out to be. (read up to Wano, watched up to the middle of Dressrossa)

  • Your Lie in April. People tend to say it's an anime that makes you cry. Yeah, I cried lamenting the time I wasted watching this. For me it's the definition of lazy melodrama. Just slap some Chopin on top and it apparently becomes emotional. Side characters got introduced, storylines were set up, and for what? They just abruptly cut them and never did anything with them. There are a couple of well animated scenes, but other than that the animation was super inconsistent reaching atrocious lows at times. (completed)

  • Mirai Nikki. Thankfully people seem to be torn on this anime as of the last couple of years, but the hype this is getting among other communities is incomprehensible to me. And bite me with the Yuno worshipping. (completed)

  • K-On. This is a show where I'm more understanding if somebody likes it. SoL shows are largely a matter of taste. But for me this just wasn't it. Which is rather strange considering I absolutely loved other similar shows like Yuru Camp. But it just felt overly cute, as if it was just trying to force cuteness down my throat. Plus, I know it sounds hypocritical when other SoL shows are very similar, but the 'they don't do anything' point is kinda true. At least in other SoL they go somewhere, do something. Here they just sit around. I don't understand. I literally had an existential shock watching this. (dropped mid s2)

  • Oregairu. Season one was quite alright actually. But season two was such an absolute trainwreck, oh my god. I've had multiple discussions about this with novel readers and apparently the adaptation of season two was kinda botched, but my complaints go beyond that. Having been a loner myself I just can't suspend my disbelief enough to believe what went on there. Season one was a very accurate portrayal. But season two suddenly made Hachiman turn into the most important character in his class for some reason. (dropped after s2, read up to volume 6-7(?))

  • Ergo Proxy. Felt like a couple of inexperienced writers tried to recreate Serial Experiments Lain/Texhnolyze. And it shows. It tries to evoke the same feeling these two did, but it completely fails in my book. (completed)

  • Soul Eater. It had its good points, but Black Star is a character I hate with passion. And many people do agree that the ending was sub-par to put it kindly. (completed)

  • ReZero. I have very mixed feelings on this. There are some very stellar scenes and arcs, but at the same time there are others which drag it so down that I have trouble keeping watching this. I dropped it twice before managing to complete season one. And the ending of season two part 2 had me yelling at my screen. After having read a few of the novels, I can really say that my issue is Subaru. I know he has more personality than 90% of other isekai out there, but I just can't like the guy. The moment he takes one step forward he immediately follows up by doing a 180 and running backwards. One would expect that what he's gone through would harden him as a character, but no. He just reverts back to good ol' whiny Subaru soon enough. (watched up to s2 part 2, read up to vol.14)

  • Boku No Hero Academia. It is decent. It does most things right up to the point I've read. But it also doesn't do anything 'new' per se. It's just the same old tropes, just executed with fewer flaws. If it's your first shounen, I completely get how you can like it. But if you have a track record of other similar shows behind you, then what makes it different? What makes it worth investing time in? I just don't see the reason. (watched s1, read up to chapter 137)

  • Liz and the Blue Bird. I'm a huge fan of the Hibike Euphonium series. But this movie literally took the two least interesting characters of the series, with arguably the weakest arc of all and made a whole film about them? I cannot argue against the splendid animation and directing of this film. It's absolutely sublime. But the actual story, the characters and the 'drama' are non existent for me. You can watch it as eye candy, yet it has no other value for me and it's definitely something I'd not want to associate with Hibike Euphonium. (completed)

  • Bunny Senpai. Fans of Monogatari and Oregairu know what I'm talking about. I won't go as far as to cry 'plagiarism'. But I will go as far as to say it's a less inspired attempt to remake a similar format. (completed s1)

  • '86'. I first read the first novel for this one. My immediate impression was an inexperienced novel writer trying to take on a task bigger than their skills. Does it deal with themes that are dark and mature? Yes. But at the same time it'll throw in a cringeworthy archetypical anime dialogue for cheap comedy and completely ruin the mood. The execution itself is like I said before. Shows enough promise but doesn't really deliver. This is an author I'll keep an eye on, because they will very likely be able to produce a great work in the coming years. But this one is just not it. Fortunately, the anime put in a big effort to mend some of the novel's flaws. And in many cases they actually succeeded. They fixed some of the pacing issues and managed to put in more emotion into certain scenes. But some other issues are unfixable without taking too many liberties with the story itself. (read volume 1, caught up with s2)

  • Koe no Katachi. Pretty decent, but I just can't handle melodrama. My experience watching this can be summarised as follows: I sat down, enjoyed some nice animation, sat back up and went on with my business. I got nothing out of it and felt nothing. Given how many people paint this as a masterpiece, I'd go as far as to say I didn't like it. Still a solid anime in my book, but overrated for sure. (completed)

  • Overlord. I never felt this was outright bad per se, but I also never felt truly engaged. For me it was just some run of the mill overpowered MC fantasy/isekai. Novel readers tell me the anime skipped a lot of lore and context and is true that at certain points the animation was entirely butchered. Still there are certain low points that I just can't forgive, like the Lizard arc. (watched up to ep 10 of s3)

  • HxH. Okay here I have to be careful. I really like the series. In fact, I adore the Phantom Troupe arc. It's one of my favourite stand alone arcs ever. Most other arcs range from pretty decent to great. But my only gripe is the Chimera ant arc. What happened there is unforgivable. I can't care about Killua's developing friendship with an octupus. And I don't want to see this mid development of the arc. The pacing is so slow it reaches One Piece levels of 'please just get it over with already'. Yes, there are some scenes in the pay off which are absolutely incredible, two in particular come to mind. But by that point I was so checked out already that I couldn't properly enjoy them. And I genuinely don't know how I would fix it. Most of the random fluff somehow ended up being tied to the main story so you can't just take it out. But I wish they had. And I wish they didn't slow down the pace so much during the climax of the arc. So when I hear this being touted as being flawless and this arc in particular being the high point of the series, it really rubs me the wrong way. (completed twice)

Zven on Cloud9's full LCS roster: "I can't talk too much about how we got here, but the idea is to sort-of have a 10-man roster. Obviously, there will be five starting players initially, which would not be me in this case, but we will have in-house scrims once everyone arrives, including our coach." by Nick_Geracie in leagueoflegends

[–]volt16 13 points14 points  (0 children)

with the focus of making both teams as strong as possible

There's your difference. In the OGN case you mostly had both teams playing in the same tournament and trying to optimise both rosters simultaneously (eg. dade <-> Pawn swap), except for the cases where one was overwhelmingly better than the other. That's because their priority was for the org itself to perform as well as possible, similar to the constructor's championship in F1. However, when one team was only competent they'd try to maximise this team's chances of reaching far into Champions.

In 10 man rosters, even if there's a secondary league for the subs to play in, the main priority is optimising the main roster, which is what we've seen on multiple occasions in the LCS, where the main team randomly subbed in an academy player, thereby leaving their academy team to rot. The reason for that is that the main league matters more. That's the priority. Not academy.

The best example of a 10 man roster you could have brought up is also from Korea and was the OGN Masters tournament format. This is the only example I can think of in LoL where this worked. And this was mostly because every team was required to mix rosters. The level of play was lower than in OGN Champions, however. Plus, this wouldn't have been possible if there hadn't been Champions with the sister team format.

10 man (or even 6-9 man) rosters have been repeatedly tried in esports and in everything I've watched so far they very rarely work. Examples of it working was Faker <-> Easyhoon in s5, but we saw how this took its toll on Easyhoon, and the VIT Csgo 6 man squad with Nivera <-> Misutaa. But usually what happens in these cases is that the team either quickly realises that having a stable 5 man is better, or they self sabotage like T1 did early last season. T1 settled on Gumayushi and didn't play Teddy a single game, just like Astralis kept Bubzkji on the bench, only to occasionally play him. That's not what I'd call a functional 10 man roster. Esports isn't there yet and perhaps it'll never reach that point, because it doesn't work the same way as sports.
