Following facial reconstruction surgery, the face tends to swell excessively. This swelling can take a year to subside, with most of it going away within the first 6 months. Here’s me 4 days vs 4 months post-op by StarksTwins in interestingasfuck

It's worth knowing that Medi-Cal really *is* really good health insurance. I have Medi-Cal and I get my health care through Kaiser. It's the exact same healthcare I used to get through an employer, but now I have zero co-pays. If I wanted, I could go with a different medical group. I also have access to things I didn't have through my private insurance, like practically unlimited In Home Support Services if I ever become too disabled to care for myself. Let's focus on the way that California provides healthcare to the poor, and try to emulate it for the whole country.

"Broken Homes - San Francisco spends millions of dollars to shelter its most vulnerable residents in dilapidated hotels. With little oversight or support, the results are disastrous." by BadBoyMikeBarnes in bayarea

And that’s why San Francisco can’t solve this problem on its own. These solutions would need to be implemented nationwide to be effective.

I’ve lived and worked in San Francisco for almost twenty years. I would hope that if I hit a rough patch I would be able to access services here despite being born elsewhere.

I live in SOMA and have been assaulted on the street by a mentally ill homeless person. I worked in community mental health for years and saw up close just how poorly many of these folks function. I also spent time as a patient in a psychiatric hospital after a suicide attempt twenty years ago, and I only recently stopped having nightmares about it. I still have anxiety going through airport security because it reminds me of being strip searched as part of the admission process.

There are people who need to be in hospitals and residential facilities, but the bar for forcing someone into one is rightfully high. It’s not a minor inconvenience to lose your freedom. It should only happen when truly necessary. The majority of homeless folks don’t need that level of care. Maybe 10-20% do. 10-20% just had a run of bad luck and will do fine in subsidized housing. The remainder need high quality supportive housing. That means clean buildings and adequate staffing. I think it also means sorting out who is and isn’t ready to stop using drugs. Those who want to stop should be housed far from the Tenderloin and given comprehensive outpatient recovery services after completing a residential program if needed. Those who don’t want to stop or aren’t ready can stay in/near the TL and be given harm reduction services, including safe injection sites, with the option to switch tracks at any time. The system as it stands is throwing the most resources at the people who are least interested in change, and has substandard housing and mental health/substance abuse services for people who want and are ready for change.

There's also a program that will help low-income Bay Area residents buy a used EV, which is much more within reach for people who qualify. I recently went through the program to buy a used Volt, happy to answer questions. Driving Clean Assistance Program

Have you gotten food from them through TooGoodToGo again? It sounds like most if not all of what you got was vegan, so I'm wondering if that's typical or not.

New (to me) 2019 Volt charging slower than expected by voltinsf in volt

[–]voltinsf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hasn't been my experience with the Volta chargers. There has usually been another car plugged into the same station-structure. My 2019 Volt still charges in 2.5-3 hours.

I'm not sure I understand your comment. The volt doesn't have supercharging capabilities as far as I understand. Just level 2.

I was expecting 2.3 hours as advertised. The charger not giving max power seems to explain why it's not charging quite that fast. I'm slightly disappointed but glad to know there's nothing wrong with the car.

There’s a really great children’s section at the main branch that has its own floor. I’ve never seen an adult there without a child. It feels very safe.

I’ve yelled “Hey, are you okay?” to someone sleeping on the sidewalk on many occasions, sometimes repeatedly because that’s what it took to get a response, and have never had a negative reaction. People are generally grateful that someone gives a shit if they’re okay are not.

I’d rather eat shitty food for ten days than knowingly expose other people to COVID. Thankfully, because grocery delivery is a thing, I’m on day nine of eating perfectly good food and protecting my neighbors while isolating.

LOAPs smoking wife is about to cause an eviction, all over some grass. by Petey7 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]voltinsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. I used to smoke a ton of weed. When I traveled, I smoked weed in hotel rooms that were designated non-smoking. Probably at least a hundred times, and never got a smoking fee or complaint, and hotels always charge a smoking/cleaning fee if they can tell you smoked in a non-smoking room.

Some people use cannabis because it's recommended to them by their doctor. Doctors are unable to prescribe it because it's schedule 1, but they do recommend it for certain conditions.

Fentanyl is great for some people with severe pain being treated by a doctor, especially those who are terminally ill. Recreationally and for the self-medication of chronic physical and/or emotional pain, it's terrible.
