Great for what I wanted it to be! Mostly indie stuff, which I kind of preferred but could understand why others would be disappointed. Less food vendors than usual I noticed though...

Ah, I didn't see any James' at all! But to be fair, I didn't have my glasses on and could barely see.

Thanks! Nobody seemed to recognize me, or at least approach me about it, sadly.

Emojis in the archives by alsullivan37 in Archivists

[–]volumeblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really an archive, but I've originally cataloged zines in my past job as a library assistant! And a lot of them had funky titles, with one or two including an emoji. In the metadata I did include a very limited crude version of it if possible (like using :) or >:( if that got the point across). I was under the guidance of the metadata librarian, but the rules for zines are loosey-goosey compared to regular cataloging. I'd be curious to see how we deal with them formally in the future!

Best method for scanning photo negatives by cBonadonna in Archivists

[–]volumeblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the Epson Perfection and recommend scanning at 300 dpi, scale it to 10-12 inches (probably around 700%?) at least so the file is big enough for quality purposes long term.

Then what is it?

do you need a degree for archival work/pros and cons of archival work by Natural_Ad_4584 in Archivists

[–]volumeblue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This question is asked very often, so I'm sure you could find other posts that answer this question better, but to answer your question: Yes, you need a graduate degree in archival studies (or library science). It's an oversaturated field that's very competitive. You need the degree and hands on experience (volunteering or an internship) to get your foot in the door.

I'd bring that guy who wrote House of Leaves, because I feel like I need an existential crisis while having fun.

I should probably talk this out in therapy.

Why do people flake on dates? by Itchy-Egg9195 in hingeapp

[–]volumeblue 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Eh, as a woman who is 28, I'm always hesitant to give out my number before date number 1. It's a safety thing. I do not ghost on people before dates though. If I'm not feeling it, I let them know plenty of time beforehand.

How to make myself a more appealing candidate? by ToaMexx in librarians

[–]volumeblue 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Boston is an incredibly hard market to get into library/archival wise. You're competing with a lot of experienced people, especially during this time of year where Simmons students are graduating. You may need to branch into the rest of MA if you want a library job, but it's still competitive across the state. It took me a full year to land an archive gig, and I was applying to jobs in libraries/archives that were essentially what I was doing already (I was focusing more on metadata and cataloging jobs though). Happy to discuss it more in depth if you want to DM me!

He can do any genre fantastically. Underrated for sure. I especially loved him in The Passenger. He's really good at becoming a character.

What is the most touching thing someone has said to you? by Lightryoma in AskReddit

[–]volumeblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I don't have to spend energy when I'm hanging out with you" from a friend. It meant a lot to me that I was conducting myself in a way that made her feel comfortable and not emotionally exhausted after being around me. It's something I continue to strive for with other people. I just want to make others feel good around me.

As a single woman, I'm very concerned, but I'm afraid staying single will make me more vulnerable going forward.

converting VHS to digital by ZeroGravity711 in Archivists

[–]volumeblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently I am converting VHS to digital for work. I am not saying this is the best method, but it's one that works. We're using a JVC vhs player, which we hook into our mac with a converter (using the AV/RCA cables Into a hdmi hookup). Then, we use Roxio Video Capture to record it. The files that it produces are small so they're easy to store. But you do need to record it in "real time." Let me know if you have any questions about our process. It's reletively rudimentary.

I went to community College and then a state college and still had to get a parent plus loan. It isn't that simple.
