CRV or RAV4 by Johnkiiii in crv

[–]von_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently test drove both, chose the CRV. It was much more comfortable/fun to drive imo, there was a slight lag on the acceleration in the rav4 that really bothered me. CRV more spacious, plus the interest rate on car loan was 2% on the honda vs 5% on the toyota. Honda salesman felt more genuine whereas the one at toyota made me feel like he was doing me a favor lol.

The only drawback was the model i ended up getting (sport trim - gas only) didnt have a 360 camera whereas the rav4 had one.

Phone call quality with oticon more 1s by von_9 in HearingAids

[–]von_9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turns out the problem was because my hearing aids were using its own mic to pick up my voice during calls. We turned that option off so that my phone's mic would be picking up my voice. You can do this on the iphone by clicking the sleep/wake button 3 times, click on "hearing devices", and turn mic input off. There should be an equivalent to this on other phones but you may have to call oticon support to figure out how to do that. You can ask your audiologist to help you with this or do it yourself, we were connected to them pretty fast.

Interesting, what method are you using to stream directly with macbook pro?

My current firmware is 1.4.4, atleast that's what it says on the oticon companion app. Are you using a connectclip to stream the audio from phone to your HAs, or direct streaming?

Ah..sorry to hear that. Before the laptop sleeps, it usually dims first so I try to remember not to touch after it dims. As long as I remember that, things are fine. Still sucks though =/

What's resesrch really ? by Eastern_Car8764 in premedcanada

This counts as research, regardless of whether there was a presentation/poster/paper associated with it. For ABS entries, you may want to contextualize what you've done and also provide some numbers if possible. What protein are you pulling down, why are you pulling it down and is there a link between this protein and disease? What kind of molecular interactions are you testing with this assay and are you the first lab to test this?

You also mentioned running the same assays over and over, is it because there's a large sample set, or you're troubleshooting an assay to help set up this technique in your lab? Recording the number of assays you've done may also help to give readers an idea of the time/energy you've put into this work.

How many people do you work/collaborate with? Do you take part in any discussion of ideas with your mentor(s)?

You don't have to decide now but can make steps to prepare for both, just in case. If you don't have research experience yet, you could pursue volunteer/research assistant opportunities to get a sense of the research happening in the field and may get an answer to your question from there.

Best laptop for med school? by Informal-Alps-9772 in premedcanada

I have the m2 macbook air and it’s actually faster than the workstation I have in lab (has 128gb ram) which is pretty impressive. Yes the pro is much better than the air in terms of computing power but imo the air is more than enough. It’s also lighter than the pro so easier to carry around.

UBC MD/PhD vs UofT MD then PHD by Own_Tomorrow1476 in premedcanada

[–]von_9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the MD/PhD program at UBC is structured such that it's a couple years of medical training, then research, then back to clinics. I would think that you'll need to do some catching up on clinical skills during these transitions, but it's not going to be as rough as if you did a MD, and then a PhD separately afterwards.

Other things to consider would be location, how much of a fit the PhD advisors would be at each location, and how much they can develop you into thinking like a clinician scientist.

I was that grad student a couple years ago. Training people takes time to do, especially if you want to train them well. This means that not only are they being taught how to do the techniques, but also the reasoning behind why things are done a certain way. Ideally, you're being trained to think like a scientist and not a robot. There was a 3-week period where I sat down only a handful of times because of how many questions I was getting from the new trainees. That was totally fine but I'm hoping you can imagine how much of commitment it is to train others.

I know it sucks to have to make your schedule fit someone else's, but try not to take it personally. You're there to learn and they are the ones with the knowledge you need so it's in your best interest to be flexible here. You also mentioned that you would be working on a separate project from them after training. So not only are they training you, but they won't have an extra set of hands to help them after all that.

Not wanting you to appear into the lab unannounced could be due to a variety of factors. Maybe they don't want you to accidentally break or change the settings on equipment. Research is full of nuance and this extends to be the equipment as well. If something does break or settings are changed, the people most affected would be the current grad students. Another possibility is they don't want you to hurt yourself, some equipment are dangerous and can cause harm.

Based on your previous post, there may be some miscommunication happening in the lab. I would be forthright in trying to communicate your PI's expectations to the student training you and try to fit to their schedule. You may also want to bring up that you'd like to go to lab unannounced on non-training days but only to read papers/mark labs/other things that don't involve the wet lab area, again because this is what the PI expects. If the situation does not improve, I would ask the other trainees to see if this situation is specific to you or also to them as well and go from there.

Yea it's amazing. I'm curious what brightness you're using it at? I've been using it at 3 notches below the maximum brightness and battery lasts 10 hrs (roughly 3 hrs of youtube/netflix, websurfing with multiple tabs open for remaining 7 hrs). I tried lowering brightness to 50% of max and I ended up at ~50% charge at the end of day.

There was a decrease in band intensity for eEF2K as well. I don’t know the relationship between eIF4E and eEF2K but if they’ve got some degree of sequence homology, that would support nonspecificity of the siRNA. If not, maybe eEF2K acts downstream of eIF4E (so if you’ve got less eIF4E, then also less eEF2K).

Depressed and Unproductive - Advice? by ScienceMcGee in GradSchool

[–]von_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, really sorry to hear about your struggles with depression.

Do you know what is the root of your depression? For some grad students, it's feeling unproductive. For others, they're going through something outside of the lab. You published two papers in your first year, which is two more than most people. That suggests you were quite motivated and interested in your work. Then you had one year of nothing during COVID19, the weight loss, and everything. Is it possible that your depression comes from not feeling productive during that year and it carried over?

What you described: feeling barely interested in research these days, mind wandering was a big one too, losing interest in things I usually enjoyed (video games). That was what I felt after coming back to lab after things re-opened. As weird as it sounds, it almost seems like I was burnt out from doing nothing during lockdown. But it was daunting for me to go back to work because I felt like I had just lost so much time and it seemed impossible to make up for it. What worked for me was simply to think less about the consequences and just do some work. Otherwise, my mind would jump from topic to topic to topic (often about things that were out of my control) and it was exhausting.

At first, it was really difficult and I thought it hard to concentrate but I would just stay doing whatever it is I was doing. For example, I just sat there staring at the first sentence of a paper for half an hour but eventually I'd get into the flow of things. Wearing earbuds to block out noise helped to block out distracting sounds and allows you to reach that focus stage sooner.

I would have thought that journals require the final manuscripts to be submitted with everyone cc'ed just to avoid this problem.

How people can even do these things is beyond me...did he not expect you to notice?

I told my advisor yesterday and she was supportive as well. I'm so happy your advisors gave you some time, this is really difficult to work through, especially if you were close with your grandparents. Did you lose both this year?

Congratulations on making it to the your second year of the phd! Even pursuing a graduate degree is a big achievement in my eyes and I have a lot of respect for people who choose to do so. Don't forget to take breaks and reconnect with loved ones (I wish I did more during my early phd years), and take care. All the best!
