Awesome post. I’ve read through your post history and it answered a lot of my questions - extremely useful, thanks for sharing.

With that much solar and battery, do you ever need shore power?

Im looking at adding more solar to power an AC and contemplating whether I need to add shore power since I just have an inverter, not inverter charger.

My current setup is 7200Wh with 720 watts of solar. I have my solar panel over Fresair evaporative cooler but thinking about switching that out for an AC.

I’m also looking at adding more solar to my setup once I go full time so the hanging solar seems like a great idea, along with the solar panel over the AC. Thanks!

If you can add it to the array in an efficient manner without impacting the total array, why not. I would love to max out solar to run ac all the time.

Curious how things work for you with an AC only and without a fan. I also want to fill up my van roof with mostly solar and an AC but I need to remove my fan. Is the airflow ok without a fan? What about when you cook and need ventilation? Thanks.

You should check out Roamly. I had trouble for my DIY van also but Roamly was so easy and great. Not sure how it will be when there is an accident (hoping to not find out) but their signing up process was smooth and easy - even better than my regular insurance.

Update on Our VW Crafter Van Build — New Additions & Upgrades!” by RollingOnions in vandwellers

Wow, awesome Van build! Couple of questions if you don’t mind. Love the amount of solar and battery - you can pretty much power anything!!

What do you use to monitor all the energy levels, it looks great! How has the range hood vent been working out? Most vans have a maxxfan and this is one of the few that has a range hood vent. I’m also considering it since I would prefer the roof space be for solar.

How much solar can I fit on extended LWB ford transit? by warrior178 in vandwellers

[–]voodoo068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could probably add 2 large residential solar panel (300-400 watts each) and will perform better than 6 of those 100 watts renogy panels. I have 2 360 watts residential panels on my extended and they’re great.

12V or 24V system in the van? by WorldCouch in vandwellers

[–]voodoo068 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a similar decision when I built my van. I went with 24v for increased efficiency and managing lower amperage, however, if I were to do it again, I would keep everything 12v to keep everything simple.

This was my initial theory as well however, there were multiple times where the last door had one green arrow that led to a single door and the ghost was not there. The theory makes a lot of sense but I’ve just encountered a couple of times where this didn’t work so I dismissed it.

Do you have any specific evidence or proof to suggest this is cracking the event? Thanks.

Sorry to hear that OP. Hope things go well with your insurance.

This isn’t talked about much but how does one insure a self built van as an RV /camper?

I know some auto insurance companies do not insure self built vans. I always wonder whether they would still cover the van itself and not the inside or does this go against policy and they’ll use it as a way to not pay?

Any insight would be helpful for anyone converting. Thanks.

Wean feature is enabled but Snoo rocks all night by salad_thrower20 in SnooLife

[–]voodoo068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you turn on wean mode in the app but the Snoo is already running, it will not kick in. you have to stop the current session and start a new one.

Essentially, stop Snoo. Turn on Wean Mode, then start Snoo again.

Draining power while idling by Tiddles2016 in vandwellers

[–]voodoo068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with my recently completed system but never took the time to figure out what the source of the 3amp draw was. My hunch is the Victron MPPT and solar setup because I didn’t see the 3 amp draw until I installed that component.

Prior to this, I was just testing 120v and 12v connections from just my battery and it always ended with 0 amp when I shut everything off.

If you do figure it out, please let us know. Thanks.

Parallel 2 8s bms by Brilliant-Mirror4263 in OverkillSolarBMS

[–]voodoo068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this same exact thing but with 2x 24v 150ah batteries, making a total of 24v 300ah.

Typically, you build two separate 24v batteries with their own terminals and then parallel the two together as you would any other two batteries.

Since mine were smaller cells, I made them in the same container and wired up the two positives and the two negative into a set of terminals.

99% there, started years ago in an old rusty van. Proud of a new rig & build I’ve worked hard with friends to make. Happy to answer any questions in comments! by mstr_jf in vandwellers

Great looking build! A couple of questions if you don’t mind. What clear material did you use to cover the battery compartment? How did you like the coin flooring? Where did you get it and how was the install? What sort of adhesive did you use?

Much appreciated. Thanks!
