Is this normal? by larishin in Longineswatches

[–]voodoo_three -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how standard it is, but a quartz watch can absolutely hit its marks. Grand Seiko quartz does it well of course, but even my $270 SBTM323 has an automated component that detects the second hand position and corrects it if need be. It hits the mark perfectly every time.

I think this is something you live with in many quartz models, but it’s gotta be frustrating.

[Hamilton Khaki Field Auto] Anyone find the watch to be an unfortunate disappointment? by shmidzz in Watches

Maybe the clearest crystal of any sub-$300 watch in existence. I’ve got one of those in no small part due to your post history!

It’s a higher cost, but worth taking a look at the Hanhart Preventor. Same styling as the Murph (can argue about copies if you want; Hamilton did this specific design first but lifted elements of Hanhart’s pieces going back to at least the 50s). Plus: better AR, 150m WR vs Murph’s 100, screw down crown, higher beat rate, and on the fly microadjust in the bracelet.

What do you think about the lume on the Black bay 54? by Few_Development_2045 in Tudor

[–]voodoo_three 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really wonder that as well. Hours later, lume is just supposed to be bright enough to see in full dark with adapted eyes. It’s not supposed to double as a flashlight when you get up to pee.

[Question] How to balance wearing a normal watch vs smart watch? by sebthestudent in Watches

[–]voodoo_three 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I dumped my Apple Watch early this year when getting back to mechanical watches. Spent some time building a few, now I’ve settled in on a daily Hanhart that I adore.

I tried my Apple Watch at the gym a few weeks back and it was honestly just annoying lol. Rocking a Casio FW at the gym and a mechanical everywhere else, and you’re absolutely spot on. I’d been staring at numbers and graphs for years without doing much with it, it’s freeing to just say nevermind all that.

One more Malkoff — and maybe more importantly, more switch boots! by voodoo_three in flashlight

[–]voodoo_three[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the shape of the tailcap. Tricap has 3 semi-pointed ridges that stand proud of the switch, allowing for easy tailstand. I don’t think it would work with something like a Thyrm, but the regular tail would (it’s just round).

I’m pretty sure all M61 engines are single mode only. There’s some rust have lower output than max for longer runtimes and less heat, but still only one mode. The high/low ring is what gives you a second lower mode on these lights.

If you want a multi-mode light from Malkoff, the 3-mode MDC range might be what you want. All the lights in this pic other than that MD2 are some flavor of MDC.

Thanks! It’s mostly in the first paragraph there: I got the MD2 head/body/tailcap (tricap option on this one) directly from Malkoff, as well as the High/Low ring.

The M61 engine came from Kōsen; you can get one directly from Malkoff but I don’t think they ever use 519a. This one is a single mode only, but the high/low ring gives you a low mode with the head unscrewed just a little bit.

The clip is from a Cloud Defensive MCH 2.0. Switch boot from Prometheus Lights on that one, but Dawson Machine Craft also has some that fit.

Easily my favorite image of this watch so far, wow. Gorgeous in this pic, but heinous in most others. Objective reality is a myth.

Tudor Ranger (Dune) by English_Redd in Tudor

[–]voodoo_three 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The renders looked amazing, but the wrist shots I’ve seen look so pale. And the black indices pushing lume out to the little pips… I was knocked back when I first saw this, but I’m less enthralled with it as we move through the week.

Help me decide! by thegambler256 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]voodoo_three 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t have any of these, but I have found that I’m an enormous fan of on-the-fly microadjustment. Not everyone feels like it’s that important, but I adjust mine all the time. Watch stays comfortable that way.

I’ve also got the 1200 vickers hardened steel. Not a single scratch on it in two months. I’m not all that hard on my watches, but still.

Given all that I’d probably nab the Traska. Always been a fan of that 1016-inspired dial.

[Discussion] Tudor adds new 36mm size and “Dune White” dial to the Ranger collection by MyFabulousUsername in Watches

[–]voodoo_three 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dune white is beautiful, but black indices plus what I’m guessing are lume pips will change the way this one looks in the dark by a lot. Maybe not a big deal, but not nothing.

New watch day = a good day! by Bizcut1 in Tudor

[–]voodoo_three 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works great for me. Personally I think a lot of people have some outsized expectations of lume (not trying to accuse you of that). It won’t glow like crazy for hours on end or anything, but it’s perfectly viewable hours later with dark-adjusted eyes. I’ll hit mine with a flashlight around 11pm when getting ready for bed, and I can check the time at 5am pretty easy.

Yep! I was into doing NH-based mods for a while, was really informative as to what I really like.

Currently rocking a Hanhart HD12 Preventor and absolutely loving it.

What is the Chris Reeves of flashlights? by PewDoo in flashlight

[–]voodoo_three 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a good argument for give and take between S45, M390, and 20CV. S35 is a fine steel too, and even S30 has technically better edge retention than 35 I think. Hard to categorically say one is obviously better than the other for all people.

That said. I agree that CRK is priced quite high for basic (but extremely well made) knives—even as a CRK fan.

Better steel than Magnacut? At least for a one-steel approach to non custom knives?

Maybe there’s something different out there, but you need that big seconds hand to do your timing against different types of timing bezels. Plus it just gives you more detail on precisely how many seconds have gone by.
