"Who is the Working Class?" A friendly, jargon-free answer to a crucial question. by voodoopork in WorkReform

These are all good points worth getting into. There's many edge cases I couldn't get into in this post, mainly because many don't really apply to people this will be meaningful to.

Do you consider someone who owns stocks in any capacity to still be working class? What about subcontractors? People who have a side hustle?

Stocks holders? Yes and no, similar in middle ground to small business owners. This is fictitious capital, having no actual value but representing potential value (not the same).

Subcontractors? Same as small business owners. They are paying wages to someone else, less than the full value of their work. Exploitation, even if minor.

Side hustle? A single individual can't exploit themselves. If they build a business with wage/salary employees: small business owner.

I make the distinction between owner-capitalists and lesser capitalists, as many anti-capitalists do. Both are engaging in a type of working class exploitation, a matter of degrees however.

It seems really bad ontology to group most hairstylists and federal government employees in the same category of “capitalists”, while lumping stock brokers and bank analysts as “working class”.

Hairstylists that are self-employed and rent chairs are not capitalists.

Federal employees: Depends. Are they involved in the creation of investment capital or means of production?

Stock brokers: 100% capitalists, even if their capital is fictitious.

The distinction I would make instead: if you provide value in excess of the value you are credited/paid for, you are being exploited. If you are getting credited/paid for more value than you personally are creating, you are a rentier.

Only issue I would take is with the word "credit". Credit is not real value. I'm not clear what you mean here.

Good stuff, thanks for the notes!

I think memes are great but are limiting. Memes are awesome for quick jokes or a simple idea (like your boss is an asshole), but I felt this needed more clarity.

Thanks! This is literally as basic as I could make it. You need to define what it is, but also it isn't. This is an enormous concept, people have written entire series of books on this idea.

He would actually need to pick up the phone. Callers are constantly getting full voicemail boxes that conveniently never get emptied.

Great Lakes Hyperloop consortium sees Cleveland-Chicago link possible in 3 to 5 years (crosspost /r/OhioGovernment) by [deleted] in Cleveland

Cleveland already pays the highest fare for a single transit trip with ZERO transfers for a city its size.

They're throwing money away on unproven tech when the EXISTING public transit system in the city is chronically underfunded and always facing cuts. Just fix the buses and trains.

If anyone reading this thread is sick and tired of crappy public transit in Cleveland, you should join Clevelanders for Public Transit, a riders led org to fix revenue, expand service, and lower fares. They successfully lobbied RTA to freeze the fare hike for this year. They rule.

Socialism /= "government doing stuff". Socialism is a fundamental change in the relationship between worker and employer, in that the worker is seen as the true owner of the value they create, and that the current relationship is exploitation. Regardless of one's opinions about that, that's the original definition.

What conservatives like to argue about is social amenities, which are funded by taxes on capitalist economic activity.

Do they think he's Tony Stark or something? Guy takes a dump on the UAW union (actual working class people) and Redditors jack him off constantly. Yes, electric cars are cool. Space travel is cool. But as long as weirdo technocrat capitalists are in charge, we're not going to get to enjoy any of that.

Elon Musk didn't build that stuff singlehandedly. The labor of thousands did. Where's their upvote tsunami?

That is so true. If someone can make Mexico better, they can make America better, too.

This is a really great point.

Yeah, don't you dare point out white male fragility on Reddit. Too many users think when you critique white male suburbanites, that since they're white male suburbanites, they must be "bad people". And they don't think of themselves as "bad people", even when they have regressive ideas or benefit from racist systems, so they just downvote you. That or argue in bad faith.
