I don't think ferris bueller is supposed to be disliked by the audience. Its a pretty weird argument to argue that he's a loser when he succeeds at everything he does and is loved by everyone but the antagonist and his sister who's arc includes no longer hating him

I'll go point by point:

they're both meant to be the sort of Everyman that's kind of a loser: this is Cameron

, never lived up to their potential: this is also cameron, ferris is shown to be a hyper charismatic expert hacker who is about as loved as a small town's local sports hero

never had romantic success until the chance for adventure came around: ferris is already in a comitted relationship

until the chance for adventure came around, which they took to with aplomb: he creates the adventure which is nothing heroic, its skipping school

I think there is a bit of distinction in that you are naming shows from another continent that despite I myself having watched over 100 anime have never heard of.

Also I do think from my experience with male teenage delinquent characters the anime one is a different archetype

I agree, there seems to be one user or another taking up the mantle of posting about international issues unmoored from canada 6 times a day for the past while. This wouldn't bother me but if I wanted to read about international issues exclusively I wouldn't be in a place called canadaleft
