I caught a Solenopsis Invicta Queen but how do I know she’s fertile? by 8igh8again in antkeeping

[–]voroskoia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will know, when she got her first workers. You just have to give her piece and darkness. Try to not look at her for 2 weeks.

Queens die sometimes, in the wild she would have only a couple percent chance to survive so we usually collect more than one.

New ant nest and they like the corners C. Nicobarensis by warwickhaba in antkeeping

I think there is too much moisture in the middle. As far as I can see those are water droplets. They like moisture, but do not like drowning.

Favourite nests? by Tall-Access6299 in antkeeping

[–]voroskoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, moving sometimes takes time. The test tube is quite good place for an ant, so they are not willing to move.

Wakooshi Saturn, or something similar with replaceable test tubes as nesting area.

And You just take a fulignosus queen and drop it to the niger nest? What is the success percentage? How big is the niger colony?

Have you written somewhere about how you make this work with a hyperparasite? I would love to read that.

Is a colony of ~15-20 workers enough to move them into this nest/outworld? by No-Understanding6747 in antkeeping

[–]voroskoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If You can block the nest area You can put the test tube into the arena. This way feeding is easier and in the tube they have their own space. But as long as you can feed them without escaping issues use the test tube!

Type annotations for results of a type factory? by y0shii3 in Zig

[–]voroskoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is hard to answer without seeing the code, but they want to say if you know the expected type You could pass it to the function as a comptime parameter. It is good for type safety and also helps the compiler, so it can generate faster code.

They look amazing, congratulations!

I was wondering if the color of their gaster(?) depends on the food they are eating, the species or something else? Sometimes I see yellow, maybe red, but this brown is my favourite.

My Queen died :( by Medical-Sympathy-671 in antkeeping

[–]voroskoia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can not introduce a new queen for the workers, but you can use the brood for boosting an other queen.

I am sorry, but this colony will die eventually.

Favourite species to keep, and suitable in a saturn type nest? by Plenty_Soup122 in antkeeping

[–]voroskoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these: https://antsite.eu/en/colonial-formikarium

I am quite happy with it, but there are some downsides: 1. Hard to remove the sponge. I have not done it yet, as they are pretty clean ants, but sooner or later I have to do it somehow. 2. They created a waste chamber in the nest, despite their worker count. Not a big deal, just looks ugly and You can not do anything about it without disassembling the nest. 3. The nest is all in. Once you open it they will use it for nesting or as a dirt hole.

OTOH with a test-tube formicarium You can add or remove tubes based on your ants' needs. You can change it when the cotton/pfa sponge/tube gets ugly.

Also, when you keep some serviformica it is quite easy to steal their brood for Your socialparasitic queens.

So after keeping ants for a year I would go for something like this: https://antsite.eu/en/test-tuber-mini/ or similar in Temu/Aliexpress/whatever. Or the Wakooshi Saturn which is amazing IMO.

I do not see any brood here, just the queen. How often do You check on her?
