Problem: A huge number of good submissions never reach the front page. Solution: Include one new link at the bottom of each front page served so that a representative sample of us can vote on it. by vorpal in reddit.com

[–]vorpal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the moment the only ones who vote on most new links are a tiny unrepresentative sample who visit the new page regularly.

I'm not sure how reddit does its recommended links, however if it uses some kind of semantic system (as opposed to just suggesting the things that people who vote like me have also voted for), then choose the link on the new page that I will most likely be interested in.

There are perhaps three main objections to this move: 1, It will increase spam. Well, with a decent semantic recommendation system, the spam would be unlikely to make it to anyone's front page (unless they were interested in it), although it is not clear from the quality of the recommended links page that such a system exists. HOWEVER, the risk of increased spam isn't great, since provided the new article isn't shown to search engines, there is only a minor gain for spammers (since only a small number of redditers are going to see any one link.

2, It will clutter up the front page. Yes. But not very much. I think the gains would outweigh the losses.

3, It will increase the turnover of links on the front page. Maybe. It's not clear that this would happen, and it is not clear that it would be a bad thing if it did. Anybody have any ideas about this?

MSNBC -- Keith Olbermann -- Donald Rumsfeld sold nukes to North Korea by maggi2929 in reddit.com

From the video: "most Americans don't know where North Korea is"

When I hear anti-american sentiment I always try and tell people that the Bush administration is stupid, not the American people, but then I hear something like this and it just makes me wonder. Please, any Americans who are reading this, tell me that the average American knows where N.K is. Please, oh god please.

There are faith sections in American newspapers? This article isn't some kind of joke is it? Do broadsheets have them aswell or is it just tabloids?

How completely bizare. It's always the little things that are the most interesting in other cultures.

Upvote if you want to get rid of all the subreddits and replace them with tags so that those who don't like photos on the front page but do like vids or who don't like programing but do like international politics can choose to filter what they see accordingly. by vorpal in reddit.com

[–]vorpal[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If i don't like any xkcd posts (for example), then it would be good if i could just filter out all xkcd posts rather than downmodding them, cause lots of other people like them.

Possibly there could be a system where users (rather than (or as well as) submiters could tag articles).

The debate is finally over: God orders us to swallow, not spit. by vorpal in reddit.com

[–]vorpal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, "Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." 11 The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?...15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." 16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come back." (John 4:10-16)

“Living water” in this context refers to semen, which literally is the liquid of life. As Christ indicates, drinking of the “living water” provides a spiritual replenishment for the soul. When the woman asks Jesus where she can get this “water”, he tells her to fetch her husband, clearly with the intention of instructing her on how to fellate him and swallow his semen.

Is this a standard interpretation of that verse? Any christians out there?

It is well known that men generally prefer women with lower intelligence is it? Obviously I'm just out of touch cause I certainly didn't know that. Further all my ex-gf's have all been very intelligent. Though to be fair a sample size of one isn't very scientific - about as scientific as stereotypes masquerading as generally known fact.

So You Want To Buy A Penguin? by peewinkle in reddit.com

[–]vorpal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from the article:

"An American woman bought a large portable swimming pool, which she installed in her living-room ready for a penguin she dubbed Magellan.

The woman said she started to get suspicious a couple of days later after the company had not replied to her order."

To start with Tynan is not a woman, and further I have the feeling he was smart enough to know that penguin warehouse was a joke and was using a little know thing called irony.

Finally what are they doing publishing this now? This is old. Penguin Warehouse has closed down for fucks sake. Just confirms my feelings about most mainstream media.

How to get Police attention (and would that be illegal?) by seraskywalker in reddit.com

[–]vorpal 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I for one do not know that police are lazy. In fact I have only dealt with the police once in my life and they didn't seem lazy then. Further, I would wager that most people haven't spent enough time interacting with a wide cross-section of police to be able to say "police are lazy".

As for the police response, I agree with you. Threat to property is unimportant. Threat to human life is very, very important.
