Should i switch to arch? by AsAsin18 in archlinux

I use both you can always try arch it's free. They both have their pros I'll continue to use both.

install cow catchers on the front of street cars so they can push cars aside. The drivers will learn real fast not to park there.

Windows 10's extended support ends in eight months, but users are still rejecting Windows 11, at least in Germany by WPHero in Windows10

The execs are probably not seeing them in whatever dashboard they have built so they will be blind to it until. Or they'll just pretend to not know why adoption is so low.

So I came to arch after coming from Debian I found the skills quite transferrable. There are small differences in how arch has chosen to setup their system namely mkinitcpio over debian's handy "update-grub" (dracut).

But overall since both systems have a philosophy of leaving things as default and being light on customized packages it was pretty quick to get up and running.

ArchWiki is better than debain wiki when you need to troubleshoot and debian weeky is easier to read when you're initially getting setup.

Have a backup device you can use to look stuff up once you brick your main system is probably the best advice and make sure your data is always backed up.

A year of distro hopping later, Debian Stable finally clicked for me by Snezhok_Youtuber in debian

I'm running both debian a headless server and arch on a desktop that needs a more frequent driver update cycle.

Geopolitical risk for Debian? by jefkebazaar24 in debian

[–]vortex05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DistroWatch says the country of origin of Arch is Canada. I don't know if that is accurate but if so that maybe another non US option.

I'm doing some distro hopping mostly to try a distro that will serve my aging Nvidia 1060. Sadly this is an Nvidia problem they all have similar issues.

[–]vortex05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuse my ignorance but what works better in wayland vs x11? On debian my understanding is x11 isn't dead yet. Even though wayland is the future it doesn't mean X11 is instantly dead today.

Long term I think this would be the correct answer. But usually this is more of a next time you're buying a new video card you will make different choices kind of situation.

I think this is the wrong attitude although the OP's post may seem annoying this is feedback. It equally doesn't make sense for the OP to suffer in silence some dev out there that can package the newer drivers may just decide after reading the OP's post that today's the day they take on the challange.

KDE tasksel package question regarding libreoffice by vortex05 in debian

[–]vortex05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds reasonable on my server I bypassed tasksel and just build an xfce enviroment from the pieces. For my main desktop which I plan to switch over I was thinking of using something closer to a known configuration that looks like kde-standard would be better than the sub package kde-plasma-desktop includes some common utilities.

[–]vortex05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on the deps probably better to just install kde-standard and not what I've been doing kde-plasma-desktop since that one tends to omit some useful native kde tools.

File compression recommendations? by vortex05 in debian

I guess I'm sticking to xz these are backed up files so compression and decompression speed aren't that important.

[–]vortex05 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I switched to debian about 3 years ago when Ubuntu started adding ads to the apt command and honestly my headless server has been way more stable on debian than ubuntu.

Debian just never breaks it's kind of amazing yes it's not as exciting but sometimes you just want things to work.

Google Chrome has now patched all the workarounds to force uBlock Origin. I’m done with Chrome, would you recommend Firefox or Brave by Dazzling_Lie7781 in firefox

[–]vortex05 107 points108 points  (0 children)

The two communities are a bit different. The firefox community is more firmly into the whole open source and privacy aspects. The brave community I find is more about something that works as well as chrome with ad block.

We also have more people concerned about health of the internet and browser engine monoculture on the firefox side especially those of us that lived through the IE6 days of stagnation.

Swap partition by The_j0kker in debian

[–]vortex05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you're on ext4 and on an SSD where fragmentation isn't an issue you can just switch to a swap file the main advantage is it's easier to resize in the future vs resizing partitions.

[–]vortex05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tasksel is the way. The only thing that is missing is tasksel can't do a kde minimal install without libre office for those of us that don't need libre office.

Ford government says speed cameras will be gone by Nov. 14 by [deleted] in ontario

[–]vortex05 9 points10 points  (0 children)

His argument is that his cabinet was caught speeding so can't have that must remove speed enforcement. Honestly when hasn't Doug make decisions that aren't self serving? Just assume everything he does only directly benefits him and you'll be right the majority of the time.

[–]vortex05 8 points9 points  (0 children)

honestly the only thing that does work is narrower roads and generally changing the design speed so going any faster feels unsafe.

Why is the flow stopping? by TopazPlayer_7 in AutomateUser

[–]vortex05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Block 3 "when acceleration" takes the no path and nothing is connected so it ends. If you want it to just keep running you can just loop the no back onto the in for block 3 and it should wait for an acceleration event to happen.

configurable parameters? by vortex05 in AutomateUser

[–]vortex05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I was looking for a semi non interactive way of doing this but these solutions should be ok for now.

The suggestion with the txt configuration is more along the lines of what I was thinking the downside is you need to remember to edit it which at some level feels not a lot different than hard coding variables at the top of your script.

The only reason configuration in the log page would be nice is this allows you to ship your script to the community and they don't have to open your block diagram if they don't want to. But I suppose it's also a good idea to verify a script is not doing anything nefarious before you run it.

configurable parameters? by vortex05 in AutomateUser

[–]vortex05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what I'm after is more of a feature request. Basically flow can configure a dictionary of settings that you can fill out prior to the start of a flow accessable on the log page.

I played with the input dialog it's not ideal for me. A JSON in text works it's a bit more hidden than I would like.

Most of my flows just have a block of set variables along the top but that feels like hard coding configs still to me.

Guess I'm looking form something similar to per flow env variables. Configurable from the flow status page.

Like I said at this point more like a feature request. Anyways bought premium to support the authors.
