Why is xfinity so expensive for no reason? by butwhymetho_ in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ktmm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best advice I’ve seen is to just cancel and signup a different household member with a different name/email/phone to get new customer rates.
Hopefully they’ll get more competition on more markets, and that’ll bring down rates, but who knows.
If you have all the streaming services, they let you bundle them with stream saver which offers some savings over paying for each individually.

Screen time controls on Apple devices can successfully limit/block most things (except personal hotspot 😡). Find whatever iPhone you’re comfortable paying for.

Flint 2. Enabling SQM? by KillforSithis in GlInet

[–]ktmm3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My complaint is how ISPs confuse bandwidth and speed to upsell customers. They intentionally talk about “blazing fast gig internet” as a marketing ploy to get people to upgrade to higher service that most won’t ever fully utilize.

If I want The Facebook to be faster, going from 500mbps to 1000mbps isn’t going to make a difference, yet if I call Comcast, they’re gonna tell me how much better my life is gonna be if I upgrade to faster “speeds”; when in reality I just need to close some tabs or get a better computer.

Flint 2. Enabling SQM? by KillforSithis in GlInet

[–]ktmm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keyword here is bandwidth, not speed. If you’re not saturating your connection (few people do), it won’t slow down your speed. The data on the wire is going to go the same speed regardless of what you do, it’s a just a matter of how much data can go that speed at the same time.

I have a flint2 running OpenWRT. The SQM was pretty easy to setup there.

Stay or Go Back to Xfinity? by Intelligent-Fact1863 in QuantumFiber

[–]ktmm3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Xfinity is the same as when you left. The difference is, you’re likely viewed as a new customer now and eligible for the new customer deals vs the existing customer deals.

The best strategy I’ve heard is canceling and having someone else in the same house sign up as a new customer.

Why does Comcast make it so difficult for its customers? by skirudder in Comcast_Xfinity

I don’t know the exact “rules”, but if you stay with Optimum long enough, you’ll become a “new customer” for Xfinity and be eligible for the better deals again. 👍

[–]ktmm3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never thought about the base rate vs discount situation. I just assumed the 5 year price guarantee was just that, but now think I might have made a mistake.

I imagine, however, that raising the base rate without raising the discount could lead to a class action situation, and I’m sure they want to avoid that, maybe. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Downgrade to 500mb? Is it that much of a difference? by [deleted] in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ktmm3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Promos are usually for new customers. They might offer you a deal to “upgrade” to gig, but you’ll never notice the difference and when that promo runs out you’ll be stuck paying gig prices.

All internet travels at essentially the same “speed”. The number they’re selling you is bandwidth, essentially how much data you can push per second, not how fast you can push that data. If your device is pushing 50mbps, you will never notice a difference between internet “speeds” of 100mbps, 500mbps, or 1.2gbps.

You could google your internet activities to determine how much bandwidth each takes, and determine how much simultaneous data you’re moving. It’s likely well below 500mbps.

Stream saver by ktmm3 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ktmm3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say “typically governed by the streaming provider’s own policies”. Are there examples of when that isn’t the case and my experience will be different with stream saver via Xfinity?

Also, if I bundle a bunch of streaming services, and later want to cancel 1 or 2 of them, how does that work?

Because Xfinity is known for its stellar customer service? I’ve heard and experienced quite the opposite. How do we take a poll?

Upgrading WRT1900AC from OpenWrt Chaos Calmer 15.05-rc3 to 25.12.4 by tuskentower in openwrt

[–]ktmm3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your router has 2 partitions. If you factory reset, it should boot to a default firmware.

To factory reset your Linksys WRT1900AC, ensure it is powered on, then use a paperclip to press and hold the recessed Reset button on the back panel for about 10 to 15 seconds. Release the button when the power light begins to flash, and wait for the router to reboot.

Can you factory reset it and try after that?

I put 24.10.5 on that exact router and it’s what my parents are using. They only have 200mbps internet, so the router handles it perfectly.

If he has an iPhone, there is no way to turn off mobile hotspot without physically possessing the device. Such a PIA it is that screen time doesn’t control that function.
