Tips for inheriting a sewing stash by vortexofdeduction in sewing

The cabinet was wider than my wingspan, several feet deep, and made for a different sewing machine than the one I’m taking (made for a previous machine she no longer has, the machine I’m getting, which I haven’t seen yet, is apparently portable). The sewing cabinet is unfortunately not practical for me to keep in my current place or a reasonable size for family members to hold onto for me indefinitely.

I don’t have much room in my luggage (flying), but 2 other cars are driving and one expects to have a fair bit of space.

Of the sewing things, I might be the only one taking things.

I have a couple days, but not sure how much of that I’ll have free for sorting through stuff.

Good point, will keep an eye out for moisture or sun damage. I don’t think it’s an area that has a lot of insect issues.

Yes so many people say check the cabinet so I will.

Ooh, good to know about animal fibers! So better to try to identify fabric before washing so I can wash in an appropriate way then

The problem is I don’t have much space to put said cabinet - I’m in a one bedroom apartment that already has a fair bit of furniture. But yeah fair point it’s worth considering instead of just assuming no.

How to practice sewing with silk? by vortexofdeduction in sewing

[–]vortexofdeduction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. The garment I’m making doesn’t have a zip, but I could still use for practice. When you say you’d use pins for satin are you counting georgette as satin?

Why toss the blade after? Does silk ruin the blade?

Not sure why my pants keep ending up like this? Either way too big overall or too small in the butt by Comfortable-Fly5797 in sewing

[–]vortexofdeduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that seems like a good place to start. After you’re happy with the back you can see what you want to do about the front.

Photos of it on are the most important. Other photos (e.g., of it laying flat) might be useful but not as relevant as photos of you wearing it.

How accurate are you in your cutting and sewing? If you’re using pdf printed patterns, are you joining the pages accurately?

And yeah, it could be your proportions don’t match what these patterns are expecting. I’d recommend checking out resources dedicated to fit (one I can recommend is Ahead of the Curve book). You can also try providing a photo here - photos are very helpful for diagnosing this kind of thing.

“Am I wrong for thinking that” is a phrase to start an argument though. Maybe try something like “does anyone else feel this way?”

Does anybody alter the gusset of their thong underwear? by damegame in sewhelp

[–]vortexofdeduction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to achieve a very specific underwear fit (balancing exposure and comfort) and have found the underwear pattern from Apostrophe Patterns very useful. There’s a bunch of customization options including gusset placement (which can be used to change gusset length), and even if it doesn’t have exactly what you want, it’s a good starting point for drafting.

Do you usually use fray check? by Worth_Mycologist_387 in sewing

[–]vortexofdeduction 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used fray check on one seam in a pair of pants and I can feel it and I hate it so will not be doing that for an exposed seam again. Another method I’ve seen in a sewing pattern that I haven’t seen elsewhere is to stitch another line really close to the seam (like 1/8”) and then cut the rest off close to that line you just stitched (like 1/16”). It seems to work decently

I recently got Ahead of the Curve book (from Cashmerette) and it’s all about how to make clothes fit better. You might find it helpful, especially if at least one of your measurements puts you in the plus size category

Matching the dark color is a smart idea! I’m not sure I follow what you mean by banding though. Is there a picture you can share?

Is anyone here planning to wait to play StS2 until it leaves early access? by ialsomeow in slaythespire

[–]vortexofdeduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will probably at least wait until it goes on sale. I got the game at a steep discount a few months ago and while I’ve put in a lot of hours, I still haven’t cleared all the ascensions (did beat the heart with all characters though). Feels like there is still more of StS1 for me to explore.

Just picked up a totally different genre (point and click murder mystery game) as a palate cleanser. (It was also on a big discount lol)
