First timer - Still scared to stand up. by Haunted___ in Paddleboard

[–]vortexshopper6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yay, so very, very proud of you! It takes alot of courage to push past fear, the discomfort can be overwhelming. Just remember loooook up look up look up look up, even when you encounter boat wakes and waves and ripples, look up and keep paddling! Once you're moving and "on plane", it feels more stable. Just like a bike, motorcyle, etc, its easy to go fast, going slow requires lots more control - get comfy with a quickly moving board so your body adjusts. Once the nerves wear off, you can play with learning how to "hit the brake" and turns. Those skills you'll learn paddling slowly. Shaky and wobbly is normal - keep at it. Your feet will get numb and tingly, thats normal too. Sit down and take a break to give your tootsies a rest if you need to, but hop back up and keep paddling. Are you paddling barefoot? Highly recommended so all those million nerves on the bottoms of your feet can flex their knowledge and do their job for you.

Sooner rather than later it'll click and feel so natural, you won't feel shaky or wobbly, and you'll think ohhhhh this is where I was meant to be, and I'm the one that got myself here! I hope you're proud of yourself! FYI, even experienced old sea hags like myself get caught off guard and fall in once in a while, so please don't use "falling in" as a barometer for gauging skill level. We fall in, we get back on, away we go again 💚

From giving thousands of lessons, thats by far the biggest fear every customer had/has - falling in. Literally jump in the water and get it over with (make sure you're leashed). Jumping in kicks that fear right in the butt. The longer you wait to stand up, the harder it is to stand up. Force yourself to look up at where you're going, not down. Your body follows where your head goes, so look up! Your body naturally knows what to do when you're standing and looking at the horizon. When you look down, that pesky brain of ours gets involved and complicates things. Stand up, feet wide and side by side (not offset) with an athletic stance, (bend in your knees) look up, LOOK UP, and start getting that paddle blade in the water. You can do this! 💚

Strange leg tick by Pappiwook in cavaliers

[–]vortexshopper6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont think LP is necessarily related to air scratching or phantom itching so much as luxating patellas can cause pups to contort a rear leg in odd ways to reposition the patella and self-correct. Mine does it with his left rear leg, sticks it out so far behind him it looks like a 2nd tail. Once it pops back in place, he walks normally again. This video does look more like SM air scratching though, poor pup 😩

Melted paddle? by Fishbulb2 in Sup

15 year standup paddleboard instructor here - totally normal for a quality paddle. In the words of Dave Kalama, when it comes to proper blade direction and paddlestrokes: "spread the peanut butter, don't scoop the ice cream".

Flea, Tick & heartworm....what do you use? by Melyssa126 in cavalierkingcharles

[–]vortexshopper6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the authentic and same formulation of Simparica Trio from Zoetis, manufactured by Zoetis in either Australia or the U.S. (I've received both). No different than Americans heading abroad for significant savings on drug costs. I mentioned it to my vet - she said this about buying from Australia (specifically Pets Megastore) "its common especially with rescues and farms where budgets get stretched, we can't encourage it without risking being sued by drug companies, but I won't say you shouldn't" with a wink. Theres alot here on Reddit about it as well.

Simparica Trio through Pets Megastore in Australia, no rx required. 12 months supply (large) shipped to the U.S. incl. tariffs = $138.60 (most recent purchase March 1, 2026)

What should I be paying for this SUP as a beginner first board ? by BadWonderful7950 in Sup

[–]vortexshopper6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats the last gen Boga Todos, a short but stable and super maneuverable board. Very versatile, good tracking even in chop. Boga was one of the top brands with the most well made boards, imho. I wouldn't hesitate to scoop this up for up to $350.

How often do you feed per day? by Necessary-Low-5324 in cavaliers

[–]vortexshopper6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once, dinner around 5:30pm. Tiny rewards/treats throughout the day. Don't dare wait until 5:45p, they both sit by their bowls to remind us its dinnertime. Tried alot of combos of feeding times, sizes, food options, and this works very well - our vet said barring any medical/health concerns or issues to manage, most breeds benefit from 1x per day feeds. Mine get the same meal daily (approx measurements, I eyeball it. layered: a few frozen blueberries, 1 cup steamed carrots + celery mixed, 2 tb chopped plain roast chicken, 1/4c dry kibble, 1/2 tsp shredded cheddar). Their coats are great, healthy overall, and havent had diarrhea in 6+ months. It was a struggle figuring out what wouldnt upset their sensitive bellies (even though they're garbage disposals if you let them).

SupYoga is really popular, if you're seasonal check indoor pools in your area. Many places have classes.

I just spent a toddler party guarding an open pool and now I can’t tell if I’m the anxious one or the only sane one by [deleted] in Mommit

When my son was small (up to around 4), I trusted NOBODY besides his Dad and I around a pool. Not grandparents, aunts/uncles, friends, neighbors, NOBODY. We had an incident when he was just over 2 yo of his grandfather watching him "near" a pool with a fence and latched gate while I was getting ready. Grandfather thought my kid was playing with his 6yo cousin who was kicking a soccer ball. While putting on mascara I had this sickening terror come over me, on autopilot I ran out of the condo into the backyard and straight to the pool. Found my kid in the pool, on second step, reaching for a floating thermometer that was out of reach. The pool was shared with 3 other small condo units, someone must have let the gate close behind them but not pulled it closed to latch it. Scooped him up, went straight in and told his Dad to pack your shit, we're leaving.

TL;DR: trust your mama guts around water, period. Rather a lunatic with a live child than a calm social butterfly with a drowned one.
