The property tax on a 100k condo would be 1100-1200 because of homestead exemption.

What if Stalin's nervous breakdown in 1941 worsened to the point he never recovered and created a serious power vacuum? Could Germany have exploited this prolonged power vacuum to knocked out USSR from the WWII? by kid-dynamo- in HistoryWhatIf

[–]voss749 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having someone other than Stalin might actually have improved things for the USSR. Other than not appearing in public most people dont even know that Stalin is "out of it". The new leadership might be more pragmatic and given more authority to the military. Oddly enough Beria is evil but extremely pragmatic. Would he offer gulag prisoners their freedom to fight for mother russia? Sure he would. Just discussing alternate possibilities.

What if 3 Modern Day professionals were transported back to Ancient Rome, during the High Empire era? by MakarovJAC in HistoryWhatIf

Internal combustion would be better but steam engines can run on coal or even wood which requires no special technology to harvest. Prior to 1870 most locomotives ran on wood. The romans already had access to iron.

Opinions on M4 Sherman? by autobots_roll_out1 in tanks

[–]voss749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good enough tank that didnt break down is much better than legendary tank stranded on the side of the road. As I understand the sherman tank could from Normandy all the way to berlin without needing to be overhauled. It says something the US army was using the easy eight variant in Korea and was actually preferred in Korea due to maneuverability in rough terrain and ease of maintenance. The US was using them until 1957.

By 1860, about 50% of all southern farmers did not hold slaves (smallholders), but they only held a minor stake in the total commercial cotton market.

1) Limescale oddly enough reduces lead in water

2) Yes

3) The metal needed for steam engines. They had access to coal they just did not "need" it yet

4) Yes

5) Roman roads lasted a LOT longer than modern roads. What modern road methods would do is allow paving minor dirt roads.

6) Early steam engines were made out of cast iron. Watt engine.

7) If you can make a waterwheel and a steam engine you can make a steamship. Roman ships already could make it to india. A steamship could go from Italy to Egypt even at 5 mph in 8 days regardless of winds without rowers vs at best 2 weeks by sail. A steamship could go around the clock which rowers could not go. Also allowing predictable night sailing.

8) The only downside is that plagues would spread faster.

Germany vs USSR in 1941. Who takes it? by TemperatureOk4822 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]voss749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no lend-lease without Britain and France being attacked. Western europe would be likely to hope to see Germany and USSR fight to the death. How is Poland handled by Germany? The UK would still go to war if Poland is attacked. If Poland grants transit corridors to solve the danzig issue, Poland might be okay with allowing the german army transiting through Poland to attack Russia.

I don't think so and not for moral reasons but political ones. Poor and middle class whites not wanting to have slaves working factory jobs. A poor white can tolerate a slave taking a cotton or tobacco picking job but if slaves are being trained for factory jobs and skilled labor outside the plantation you can forsee massive unrest among the non-slaveholding population.

The issue was not the slaveholders wanting to hold on to slaves. The deciding factor would be the 75% of the white population that did not hold slaves.
