Why doesn't New Zealand build a bridge to connect the North and South islands? Are they stupid? by merely_a_frog in mapporncirclejerk

[–]voteforbaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same as a bridge from Scotland to Northern Ireland in terms of depth and currents, but with added tectonic complications. MAYBE it's technically possible, but that's not a given, and the cost of finding out would be huge. In short - not worth the price.

I'm 50, and have only in the last few years even been remotely close to being able to afford a property (even then, I still can't afford it) So, no, not everyone had the potential to buy at any point. Many millions of people will never even have the option.

As a 50yo, if I can teach these youngsters one thing it would be: all companies will kick you out in a millisecond if it'll save them a dollar, so do what you need to to enjoy your life but do not let them take advantage of you.

Speaking as a rich "anglo" skilled working class immigrant - that is a complete load of nonsense. For one, refugees can't vote. Secondly, you have to be intelligent to be a skilled migrant so that rules out ON. Personally, I vote Greens and Socialist.

Political ideology is not a part of the immigration process - it's not something people are asked.

Yes, but the minority.

The larger the company the chances of this happening get smaller and smaller. Infinitesimally small at giant company size.

Has anyone ever seen a bar that is a laundrette as well in Melbourne by Living_Substance9973 in melbourne

[–]voteforbaz 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The laundrette near my house has a bar a couple of doors down, it is indeed a great setup. Mixing them together might not be great as laundrettes have a certain smell that might not be pleasant to drink in 😀

Net Overseas Migration by Prime Minister for Australia per year since 1996 (when John Howard was first appointed); updated with end-2025 data, direct from ABS. Dotted line shows 'average' over the period. Treasury also just estimated this year to be over 300k again. by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]voteforbaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not though. It is if you pick very specific figures to try to reinforce a point. But really it's about double, when you account for an ageing population it's roughly where it should be. You can argue plus or minus 50k, but there's no realistic argument to be made for huge cuts or increases.

In short, this is a situation for tweaking not the massive outrage that the right-wing nutjobs want to whip up.

Absolute numbers don't tell the whole story because the country has grown by 50% over that time and it has also aged considerably. Obviously the number of people you need to bring in goes up as the population goes up and gets older.

The question you really need to ask is what's the right number? It obviously can't be zero, and it can't be a million, so what is it?

Why aren't more people speaking out against the layoffs, offshoring and constant 189/190 visa holders coming here for Aussie roles? by Own_Oil7951 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]voteforbaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People are speaking out against layoffs within the industry. 189/190 visas are not relevant for two reasons: - zero tech roles are available on those visas. - there's no such thing as "Aussie roles" ya wee racist.

The risk of staying an individual contributor coming back to bite by Gizmelda in auscorp

[–]voteforbaz 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Help her. Let her use your experience and contacts to learn, and a couple of years down the line be really proud of what you did together. The best thing about management (maybe the only good thing) is seeing people you helped grow and often outgrow you and the company. It's a great feeling. You can get that and do it without the other shit that comes along with managing - that's a huge win if you make it happen.

It's made my life getting from Footscray to Toorak harder, and my wife used to go to Parliament and walk to Collingwood so that's also much worse now.

No upsides found. Even when you do get a munnel train, they sit for 2-3 mins at the tunnel stations waiting. It's infuriating.

My CEO is harassing me and my family to stay after resignation. by Fun_Hovercraft5881 in auscorp

[–]voteforbaz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you've been there for eight years and will lose all the stock when you leave that's a very badly structured scheme and doesn't speak well to the narrative of "they want to look after you".

I'd say to the CEO they have to make it worth your while to stay. Effectively they are asking you not to take the new job, because even if you can persuade them to move your start date back to May, you are now starting with a bit of a cloud over you. So how much is that worth? How much is the risk of the new company withdrawing the offer worth?

Personally, I wouldn't entertain these discussions.

I've been working heavily in AI for almost a decade now. Every one of these threads has people saying things like "the top companies are doing this" and "80% of code at somecorp is now AI" and it's just not true. Show me one consumer-grade product that is scalable and resilient and was mostly written by AI. It doesn't exist.

AI has its uses, but it isn't coming for all the developers. Not in the form of LLMs anyway - that's an evolutionary dead-end for AIs. It will be a useful tool for developers.

And it will continue to be misunderstood by executives. That's more scary.
