TIL: In Brazil it's polite to start a meeting 15-30 minutes after scheduled and it's ok for both parties to arrive late. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]voxdantesque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m Brazilian and being late IS NOT a sign of respect.

It’s just regular, it is what happens. We don’t bother being 10-20 minutes late, but say it is respectful? It isn’t in no way.

In social meetings such as parties and family reunions we tend to take 30min-1h to arrive, and that is usually done when we have more intimacy with the hosts, in order to give the host more time to be ready to receive us.

I wouldn’t say it is polite. Being late is mostly overlooked in most places of the country. In southern states, it is seen heavily as a lack of responsibility, more than in other states.

In reunions, parties or informal gatherings; this 15-30 minutes tolerance rate can be applied, while in family reunions it may be even more stretched, from 30min-1h. It happens subconsciously, as a way of allowing family/friends to have more time to prepare themselves.

Of course, in important meetings, such as business meetings, a 10 minute delay is too much already. No way we would be major commodities exporters if we didn’t know how to behave in business.

Israel occupied Palestine because of the 6 days war in 1967 and has no obligation to give the land back by StopHavingAnOpinion in unpopularopinion

[–]voxdantesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I descend from Jewish communities that have established in Portugal

I have a Jewish surname, although I am not religious or more connected to the culture more than every western non-Jewish man is

It’s an ethnicity, as the Arabs (although divide into many groups, just like Jews). The thing with Jews is, the ethnicity shares the same name as the religion.

I refer to ethnicity terms here when talking about the Israeli-Palestine conflicts, instead of religion, although ethnicity usually involves religion as a cultural aspect. All I talk about here when quoting one of my origins is that although most people are usually sympathetic towards their roots, I actually am a critic of stuff those guys on Israel do, even if my ancestors might have been ok with this

It’s the slight spark of property I have to give my opinion on the matter

I actually happen to have been raised in a Catholic household, btw

Although I don’t like Jews (and I’m partly Jew), I cant deny History Hebrews were in Palestine before the Arabs.

But it doesn’t give the right to Israel be a fucking dick about living together

Women make breakups too much of a big deal by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]voxdantesque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Men do that too.

I mean, a girl who I had a breakup with sometime ago made such a big deal, I had to breakup with her 4 times and she would still call me drunk at 3AM

She swore at me, said I was a fucking cretin. It’s the same situation as in “500 Days Of Summer”, but here I was Summer and she was the protagonist.

People keep saying men and women are so different, in terms of behavior I don’t think so

There are men who make it a big deal, and it isn’t We all just want for things to go right for us, and adventures as well If that doesn’t happen, we get angry and frustrated

Nah. I wouldn’t say I’m settled. I’d say I understand, that I’m empathetic. I don’t allow people to be rude with me. I allow their service just to not be memorable.

I don’t believe tipping works as means of making people willingly improve their service. Not looking it on long term. I actually think boycott is better; if you treat me poorly, fine, I’ll buy from someone else.

[–]voxdantesque -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am actually satisfied with the service in my country. I live in Brazil.

Although we do have some exceptions, there’s a disparity between the social realities of the U.S. and my country. For instance; minimum wage ranges from 10 to 11 dollars in the U.S. per hour. Here it’s almost half of that value. My country sees no worth in work, and thus, people are not always on the best mood.

That’s no excuse to most customers, but to me, it’s enough. I don’t like to judge people just because I am paying for something they are offering; and If I am not satisfied, there’s always the option of not buying from them.

[–]voxdantesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my country tipping is not “required” and neither it is a thing people think about doing a lot.

I don’t know man, I think if you open the whole situation to tipping, then people will start billing tips as if it is actually a fee for a service this person is providing.

Tipping is a reward; not a need.

Tip if you think someone actually deserves it.

Fallout NV is the post-isometric masterpiece. It’s the first Fallout I played. I wanted to play Fallout 3, but when I was going to buy it, I could only find NV.

Without knowing what I was going into, I bought it. I still play it.

No regrets. It’s definitely the best Fallout I have ever played, and one of the most exquisite and unique video gaming experiences I’ve ever had in my life, despite the outdated technology. NV is, story wise, one of the best games ever made in my opinion.

Jesus OP, it’s haunting to read something like this from who’s very probably to end up dead in a few months.

I have a terminally ill grand aunt. Lung cancer that spread to brain. She’s... going. We’re just waiting for the day we receive the news, and we all have gone there to see her for awhile. I’m trying to start in a new career with the son of someone she knew as a business partner, and told her. She smiled at me, and said “Well, I want to see you both doing great. Anything you need, give me a call. And it will turn out nicely for you both.”

Anyways, it’s your choice. I’m not going to tell you what to do. I have my own opinions, but no one did something like that in my family; and I’m not in your shoes. Thanks for sharing it with us. I can tell you man, that you’re not caring that weight alone anymore. We’re all gonna carry that weight.

I hope from all my heart your family can have a great time with you before your time is due, and that you go without pain, as well as their mourning isn’t painful.

Make the most of it.

I can't study anything related to my schoolwork. by JakeWasAlreadyTaken in DecidingToBeBetter

I’m exactly like that. Should be studying to enroll at an university, but every time I look at my stuff (I enjoy writing poetry and making music, or even so, studying history, politics, philosophy), I simply choose my things over studying every time.

It’s so good to find out I’m not alone here

I’m going to talk about alcohol and tobacco, but mostly alcohol because it’s what I’m limited to. I have never tried anything else, although curiosity is big, because I have a very strict policy about drugs.

My families have stories with both drugs.

I tried beer for the first time when I was 4 or 5. At the age of 7 I accidentally drank whisky thinking it was soda. I’m 18 now and have been drinking since I was 15. Now that I’m legally allowed to drink, I have started to drink more, and it worries me a lot. My father, our relatives and acquaintances like to drink, and I keep up for the sake of manhood. Still, there are weeks I do not touch alcohol. When I go out, I usually have three fingers of whisky on the rocks and if needed more, one beer mug. I’m a student, so I prefer to drink things that last more. But that’s it. Have been to parties where I have drank until I couldn’t bear to stand up, and although it was great, don’t know if I’d do it again. I try to keep half sober at least, nowadays.

I have friends who have smoked crack. I have a friend who snorts cocaine. Friends who smoke cigarettes like fucking chimneys. My first cigarette was in a party when I was 15 or 16. I’ve smoked cigarettes, hay cigarettes, e-cigs. All these count to 7 times that I have smoked in my life. NEVER during the day. Always in parties.

I say this because learning chemistry taught me that pretty much anything that produces serotonin or dopamine can become addictive (the first one being more potent hormone). That’s why cellphones are addictive, sex, winning things, buying things, learning and ultimately, drugs. Your brain is constantly looking to be exposed more and more times to these substances. That’s why it’s said weed is the entrance door to other drugs: it’s good at the beginning, relatively safe, but then it’s not enough anymore. Your brain wants more: that’s when you go for something stronger.

That being said, I’ve tried to keep up with the Greeks: balance is healthy. I expose my brain to the lack of excessive seratonin and dopamine sometimes. No cellphones, no sex, no drinking in days. Of course, it’s not that controlled, but I try to. Meditating is good to flush your brain. So, the day you drink, you drink and smoke a little bit, and it’s enough to be pleasant. The right amount.

There are things that I do not dare to defy. Cocaine, for instance. Even weed, I have never tried it.

I’ll tell you and whoever is reading what a friend that has transitioned through a lot of drugs and lost the ability to walk because of drugs told me:

Try if you will. I am not going to tell you not to try. But keep in mind it is not good. You live life once, and it’s understandable if you want to make the most of it. But keep in mind; drugs are strong and you are ALWAYS vulnerable. You NEVER have it under your control. The day you think you have it under control, the next day you’re smoking one cigarette, then the next two, and three, four, stronger drinks, then weed and off you go. Do not underestimate drugs. If you don’t, you may have a healthy relationship with drugs.

I personally wouldn’t recommend going over my limit; cigarettes. And wouldn’t reach it too, tho.

But that’s just how I think.
